Bandwidth

How much do HL servers eat...
Just wondering if anyone has statistics for bandwidth usage for say a 14-16 player server running 24/7. Servers will likely not be FULL 24/7, but pretty close for some, so if you can estimate for full ALL the time that would be good.

Looking for u/l and d/l requirements (I'm assuming u/l > d/l).
Also looking for amount of traffic used each month (are we looking @ high u/l amounts, say 15GB? less, more?).

Server hardware is not a problem, just looking at options for business style connections.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
-Matt

The bandwidth usage on my server averages out to 80 kilobytes per sec for 18 players which is 640 kpbs
and 507 kpbs for 10-13 players and drops down to 312 kpbs for 6-8 players. I can't tell you the ul/dl rates but the rates I have given is ul and dl.

Ya, I was looking at a 640Kbps connection and it looks like this should be ok for 16 players, how is your server running anyway? If you could get some daily usage (overall traffic u/l and d/l) I could just estimate this for a month.

    Tanks for the info,

ok I did look into the stat today and found that with 16 players the ul rate is 400 kbps and the dl rate is 200 kpbs. With 18 players on.. ul is 440 kpbs and the dl rate is 224 kbps.

The site below describes how to find the upload speed required for the amount of people on your server. I couldn't find anywhere on that site that had the download speeds. It seems, for upload, to take 5-7 Kilobytes a second per player.

If you all look at your server config, it allows you to send maxrates for clients, if you want to know your max bandwidth usage, just look at it for both up and down, assume you have max 24/7 or whatever time frame you want, so multiply it by your max slots, add it together, and work it out for the amount of a month or whatever you need. That will give you how many bps you'll need, on average, 16-18 slot servers full most of the time like CHI Mayhem and a few others take just over 50 kbps...that's a good frame of reference, since a lot of clients don't use the full send/recieve rates, which are usually defaulted to 10kbps on most cfgs I've seen. My own server uses much less than 15 GB a month, but is empty 3-4/5 of the time. It uses only a hundred to 200 megabytes or so of bandwidth a month

    Here's my 12 player server, "sv_maxrate 3000":

When including graphs and statistics include the sv_maxrate as well.

Also, just go back and edit your posts so that it is easier for people to match the statistics with you sv_maxrate

    Somebody check my math here.

I'm hearing ~600 kbps (kilobits per sec) for ~16 players, and if I ran a server, i'd run it from 5 PM to 8 AM, that's 15 hours. Let's just assume the worst and that it will be packed 100% of the time it's running.

    600 kbps / 8 = 75KBps (kiloBytes per sec)

    75KBps * (60 seconds / 1 min) * (60 mins/ 1 hr) * (15 hrs / day) * (30 days / month) = 121500000 KB per month = 115 GB per month

Is that right? because that sounds like a CRAZY amount of bandwidth

    Have no fear!
in the new HLDS version there is a built in bandwidth stats!

Vadakill, I'm assuming that the solid green area is your upload and the blue line is your download?

Thats using 100% utilization 100% of the 15 hrs.

    using your example
your bandwidth is 600Kbps, which is 75KB/s.

    75/16 = 4.687 (sv_maxrate 4500, i rounded off)

    4.5KB/s per client.

Lets say its full 8 of the 15 hrs.

    (16*4.5KB/s) = 72KB/s

    72 * (60 seconds / 1 min) * (60 mins/ 1 hr) * (8 hrs / day) * (30 days / month) = 62208000KB / 1024 = 60750MB /1024 = 59GB/mnth in transfer for those 8 hrs.

thats a more realistic # because only MAJOR server are full 24/7, and even then they aren't because kids got school
