Server Ops, Take Note On Pings

for those non-believers
These were far too boring to post in General, but you all may like them, if you perhaps thought the one shot shown was a fluke. I apologize for not having any of Bast (which used to be nearly the worst on CPU's, and is now one of the best), but I forgot to take shots. I will post more later, and this thread will also have perfmon (and linux variant) process, network, mem, etc. data in it later for your perusal. Stay tuned.

I'll post server stats later as well - sorry, I can't seem to find my notes on it. It's a fairly modest 1-CPU Win2000 std. server machine though on a shared T1. I seem to recall 1.2Ghz...
  • Eternal_BlissEternal_Bliss Join Date: 2002-11-07 Member: 7633Members, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
if it's 1.2ghz then i'm shocked!, you guys improved it so much
i will be able to run 16 players on my little machine, yey!

Maybe dead or Spectatating can't see team scores? Either that or they have been removed.

In some pictures he is not dead, so it looks like scores were removed

MonsE, do you know what your latency on a regular old ICMP ping to said server is? Would be nice to compare with existing differences/ratios between raw latency and in-game latency.

I would be very interested to see a pic of hera at the start and near the end on a Linux server.

As for personal scores, I don't think it effects team scores, but cuts down on 'look at my score, I am better than you' comments.

Ohhh man, PLZ BE TRUE! I have a 1.6 ghz on a t1 line and when i have 16 players in i get a ping increase of 100 if the map is hard for my comp to run. This only makes my mouth water! PLZ COME OUT WITH V1.1 SOON. ALL THE MINI SERVER OPERATORS WILL LOVE IT AND PRAISE U MORE!

Note my ping in each of the screenies. I'm on a 56k on the central east coast of Australia and the server is on the north east coast of America. And that was a stable ping, I don't think it ever went above 525.

[EDIT] I just pinged the FoR server and I got a minimum ping of 420, a max of 500 and an average of 451 with no packet loss

We can all agree you need $10000 a month + $1000000 set-up, and get yourself a decent line.

This is truly good news and could save the mod from server price death. This is probably the single most important change in the new release.

Well, Not to be a nay-sayer. But without an idea of what you where getting before. Those pics don't really say to much. And going by the team scores. allot of the maps didn't run truly that long.

What OS was this server running on? Windows? If so that really isn't much of an improvement is it? My server pings on a 16 player linux server look better. running 1.4. (usually all 35's-100's) So lacking any more info then a bunch of SS. I fail to see what we are even suppose to be looking at here.

I'm assuming it's NS-1.1? And what where your pings before? That make this such a good improvement? Where your max players always this high? Or did you increase them as well? I'm really at a lost as to what this is suppose to show or mean. After all its just a bunch of screen shots with a title look at the pings. And they don't look all that great to me.

Can someone explain what I'm missing here?

CUrrently running 1.04 my 1.4GHz athlon win2k machine gives pings between (<10 meh) 10 and 100 for thsoe who aren't on 56k or worse on every map except hera, which usually sees up to 150 pings for digital line players. I have maxplayers at 16 with 4 reserved admin slots, which are usually full. Judging by the specs posted and maxplayers, I would be able to handle that number of players with lower latency than I currently dish out.

    THAT is kick ****!
