The clay bob progress thread

RoadMasterRoadMaster Join Date: 2002-06-01 Member: 718Members

An updating thread on my progress
okay, for those of you who didn't know (so, anyone who didn't go into #ns today or wasn't around when I was) I'm working on a Bob model made out of clay (Sculpley to be exact). This thread is, of course, to post my progress on this old creature. I'm using some of the higher quality screenshots as reference, but I think I still have a while to go on this puppy, hopefully I can get some good detail in and paint it later on. Any crits and comments are welcome! (and of course, this is an excuse for me to make a board account instead of idling around, heh)

So here are the goods!

First version, before I put much detail in...

Second version, or what it's currently at, better quality pics here.

I'd love to hear any comments you guys have about it, so feel free to add to this post as you wish... I might make other NS aliens after I finish classes, but I'll see when the time comes

Here's a little extra to keep you guys waiting, I made a little avi of bob walking, it's 300kb, and kinda cheesy, but he wasn't made for animation anyways.

there is only one thing wrong with it, bob's behind goes up, not down like you did , you can see it here, the detail on his front legs and head is truly amazing tho ^_^ Btw that clip is cool, reminds me of 80's popmusic videos d:D

very nice, is that just a hobby or do you do it for a living? You should make a mold when its done! Then you could sell em and ppl could paint em, like those resin anime toys. Id buy one!

thanks for the nice comments everyone, and no, I don't do this for a living, it's a hobby. I'm still in school so I don't really have any job, hoping to go into digital animation though

I can imagine a bronze Bob, based on that being awarded to the winner some kind of NS tournament.

It was a racing game using NSTR. A lot of people made maps for it and the like. However, I wasn't in it.

Quick little update pic to keep you guys on your heel for a bit. I've cooked the clay bob (he was cracking when I put him upright, and I decided I could make another if I didn't like it during the summer). This is the version that will be painted, and I also put him on my hand so you could see his size, he's pretty much exactly the size of my hands, but I also have fairly small hands, so I'll tell you he's as long as a CD case...and as wide as half a CD case.

how about , when you are all done with it, you can auction it off, and the profit could be sent as a donation towrads the ns servers, or you could just pocket the moneys for the great job you've done ?
  • RoadMasterRoadMaster Join Date: 2002-06-01 Member: 718Members
well, a few points I just feel like saying, because this seems to be brought up a lot by you guys.

#1. I won't be selling clay bob, for one because I don't think the NS staff would appreciate myself taking their ideas and characters, and then making a profit off of them, while they are working hard on the mod which they aren't getting paid to do.

#2. I will not be making resin copies or mould or whatever, because I have no idea about the amount of work needed to do that (and I have a feeling it would be difficult with Bob's shape) and it would also be a pain to mail it to those who wanted it, along with my expenses in supplies

#3. I may eventually make more NS creatures and stuff, but don't expect anything right away, my exams start in a week, so the earliest for me to really work on something like this would be 2 weeks from now.

hmmm, maybe ill get me some mud to play, hell i always wanted to try sculpture, i think it would be great if the team allowed the sale of "NS figurines" in order to help pay the bill for the "official" servers for ns, and the mold cant be all that bad to do since they make a ton of figureines in the real world, im not saying it would be easy but it must be possible, well, ill sleep on it and c waht i can do, what does the rest of the community think about this idea ?

Somehow bob is much more threatening at that size, I imagine like dozens of them clawing me to death, because as you know mini-bobs hunt in packs
  • RoadMasterRoadMaster Join Date: 2002-06-01 Member: 718Members
yes, clay bob is still alive... I've begun painting him, but probably won't continue until exams are over...
