First resident evil, when i was like 7...

I had nightmares + thought a zombie would bust out my wardrobe or window at any time.

    System Shock 2.

In a dark room with sound turned up to unhealthy levels I nearly pooped my pants when I encountered the "so much sorrow" spider trap.

I have played quite a few scary games and cant decide which one scared me the most but i do remember playing Resident evil 2 on the PS1 and having that scare the crap outta me at one point. Its the scene where you go into a gem puzzle room and the music goes quiet. No monsters are in the room and its all rather calm but as soon as you step over a certain point in the middle of the room a huge 'Licker' monster comes crashing through the skylight. I hade my Speakers on rather loud at that point and the sudden sound of smashing glass and the eerie sound the Licker makes made me jump so much i dropped the PS1 controller and had to go down stairs to get a cuppa and watch TV for a while.... <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

That part wasent THAT scary, I though the part where you walk around those boared up windows with holes in them, then have zombie hands shoot out at you was the scariest. I would have to say tyrant **** me off the most in that game. He constantly broke through every wall or climbed over any railing in every single room.

Eye of the Beholder (I think it was on the Amiga) a good few years ago. The level with the spiders, played late at night. Looking back on it, not scary at all, but at the time the noise freaked me right out.

Trust me.... when you have a couple of 100Watt speakers rigged up to your PS1 at high volume at 2 am with all the lights off...

I would have to say RTCW.

Those monkies were downright freaky. You would hear the "tic tic tic" of their claws and realise, frozen, "Oh crap, I don't have enough ammo".

That and those countless times a headcrab lept out at you from the shadows in a vent in HL. Super freaky.

That and that and that ghost in System Shock 2, near the door up the top level right at the start, just before you meet your first zombie.

Resident Evil for me, I haven't played any survival horror games since that. For some reason it scared the poop outta me, yet I felt compelled to complete it.

I guess games that scare the crap out of you either make you braver or more of a coward.

The screenshots for <a href='http://www.planethalflife.com/manke/' target='_blank'>'they hunger'</a> look pretty good for a half-life mod. Might check it out.

    Clive Barker´s UNDYING

Thats a pure horror game and I'm shocked that nobody has mentioned it.

The Marine campaign for Aliens versus Predator, or Resident Evil 2: Director's Cut

    Resident Evil on the Gamecube.

That was made even worse by the fact you know it's going to happen.

Like the infamous "Dog Corridoor" The first time you enter it on the GC the window nearest you smashes. Or theres that time you can see a zombies shadow tapping a window. (Not to mention the sound of it!)

    And Eternal Darkness.

    I hate sanity effects.....

That's a hard one. I would have to say Silent Hill for PSX. Not as scary as it was creepy, but it was god at being creepy, real good.

Especially one of the times the place turns "evil" (Read: everyting turns into a badly lit, rusty, chain-link fence.) Hell, any of the times the place goes evil would be enough to give a 7yr old an anyarism from fear. you walk around in a creepy evil hospital, and a creepier evil hospital where the rooms are all random and nuts. Then theres the creepy evil school and creepier and eviler fairgrounds... DAMN that was a good game.

SH I and II were both great and still moderatly scary first time through, possibly even seccond and third too.

System Shock 2 and Undying were both scary.

But for me, the hands down winner is the Aliens mod for the original Doom. And I don't think it was because I was about 10 at the time.

I don't know if it's available anymore, but here's a general synopsis of the first 3 levels:

You're on the spaceship, it's dark, foreboding, and scary feeling. You hear sounds of aliens *all* the time. Every corner you take, you're strafing out to check for aliens, and every time you do, you're waiting for what's around the corner... but there's nothing there - you just hear more sounds coming from all over.

The first 2 full levels are like this. In the middle of the third level (and you haven't seen an enemy yet, mind you), you enter this round room and see someone attached to the wall. You walk up and "talk" with them. Immediately, the lights go out, you hear sounds, the lights come back on, you turn around, and there are SIX aliens standing behind you.

    I literally jumped out of my chair. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

Silent Hill on the PS. A load of friends came round my house for a general pizza and videos night. Someone brought a PS and some games including Silent Hill. I spent all of about 10 minutes playing Silent Hill but I found it really creepy.

Resident Evil was good at makin me jump but I was never scared really whereas Silent Hill freaked me out.

Another vote for <i>System Shock 2</i> here, despite its Xan-like ending section. The <i>Thief</i> games deserve a mention too for pure atmosphere and tension.

However, Jurassic Park on the Amiga had one part that scared me greatly - the first Doom-style 3D bit when you're going through a bunker and looking out for raptors. It turns out there aren't any enemies in there, but by god you're pooping yourself at every corner.

Oh yeah, Thief2 used to crap me, (call me chicken). Those bots and their little chants, sooo creepy.

Tombraider, when that first came out, I used to shat bucketloads when the giant t-rex used to come at me.

Silent Hill, I remember playing it with my friends at 3 in the morning with all the lights out, I went crazy... I kept thinking the shawdow of the drapes were like bloody chains like in that one level...

Marine campaing in AvP was way... way too freaky...

    Fatal Frame.

I can't stress enough how scary this game is. It's for PS2 and XBOX, btw. I totally recommend it, make sure you play it alone in the dark. (no pun intended :D) It's a hundred times worse then silent hill, if you were at all scared of that. Silent Hill 2 would be my second choice for console, and undying and shock2 being the scariest games for computer i've ever played.

Oh man, I remember the Alone in the Dark game... boy, that was scary. I was rather young at the time... *shiver*. Scared me.

    Here's my list:

    Clive Barker's Undying
    Resident Evil 2
    Phantasmagoria
    System Shock 2
    Doom 2
    Castlevania
    Serious Sam

Rise of the Triad had those somewhat scary suicidal guys, who would beg for mercy before killing themselves... scary to hear from a long distance firefight.

When I was young, I was freaked out by Wolfenstein. Seeing those red-eyed Nazi's up close, blasting away at me, 5 health left...
