Dropship Prefab

screenshots of first version
Comments, of course, are welcome.. it's in real scale, so theoretically (if I were insane) I could make a hollow version with working doors and a crew compartment and everything.

It looks more like an asteroid rock with some nice windows and trusters than like a dropship.
Buts its a nice rock with windows and trusters.
Maybe thats just the texture missing some "signs" and "shiny metal".
It has legs or wings missing, something that makes it less round.

my map really has missing a lowpoly dropship of yours shape (with legs or wings) and I might use this with tome small changings.

I agree with Ollj, it has and awesome shape, but the textures make it look like a rock. Make it a bit shinier and it will be great!

i'de love to get a copy of that (so i can make a model of it)

what would you guys use more, a mdl, or a prefab?

i'de say MDL, because you can put more detail in a MDL...
• Gimpy_Doodly_DooGimpy_Doodly_Doo Join Date: 2003-03-15 Member: 14521Members
Yes good point. Mdl is better, unless you are going to hollow it out and make it a place to go in.
• taledentaleden Join Date: 2003-04-06 Member: 15252Members, Constellation
On the other hand, MDLs cut into epoly limits.. granted I'm new-ish to NS mapping, but I've heard people mention that marine bases have epolys coming out of their @$$es, so adding a bunch more with a big model like that might be troublesome.. on the other hand, wpolys can be just as hard to keep in check, so I dunno which is better overall. The advantage of using it as a brush prefab, of course, is that mappers who use it can customize its textures/etc as necessary for their situation.

But, when I'm done, you're welcome to do with it as you please.

I want it NOW to chop some polygons and hollow it out.
2 docked dropships will be my RR.

300 polys in a model is about the equivelant of two ammo boxes.

Various responses:

>>I have to agree that it's a bit bulky

Did you mean a high-poly MDL file would be bulky in terms of epolys in a marine start? Or did you mean the dropship model itself looks too bulky? In the latter case, all I'd note is that it's a dropship, not a luxury liner and not a starfighter.. it's meant to hold a lot of people/equipment, so I don't see how it could be an effective dropship and not look a little like a cargo container with a cockpit.

However, I am currently redesigning it.. going to add wings, put the engines on the sides instead of the rear (and maybe add a larger cargo door on the back), possibly change its outer hull shape a little.. I'll post v2 screenshots when it's ready.

>>I want it NOW to chop some polygons and hollow it out.
>>2 docked dropships will be my RR.

You can have it when I'm done with it.. I don't want my work going into somebody's map before I'm happy with it. Of course, I am flattered that you want to use it.. and you ****, docked dropships was going to be MY RR! That's why I started making the dropship in the first place!

...of what? You do realize those two sets of screenshots were both mine, right? Or am I misunderstanding?

as always..

Very nice work there. I agree that the hull could use a little more texture detail perhaps, but otherwise it's vey good indeed.

Screenshots for version 2 (as before: ingame with lighting and background, and equivalent angles from the editor)

In this version:
-added wings
-changed the texture
-redesigned the corners.. however now they're too complicated and seem to be creating 'leaf portal saw into leaf' errors, which will hopefully resolve themselves in version 3

Next version:
-probably a more rounded hull, possibly slightly larger (in preparation for the hollow version)
-landing gear
-different engines

feedback is of course still welcome.. if anyone has a suggestion for a better texture for the hull/wings/whatever, post it and I'll try it out, see how it looks.

Actually, the more I think about it, the more I want to call it a Shuttle or Personnel Transport instead of a dropship. I'm thinking a dropship should be on the order of 3-5 times bigger - big enough to carry a few vehicles, with big cargo doors to unload them, maybe even side hangar doors so ships like this Shuttle could land inside the dropship or be launched while the dropship is in orbit, like a planet lander.

This, of course, means that when this is finished, I might start playing with a hardcore dropship. Thoughts on all of this?

why did you guys hate the first version? IMO, the second version looks fkin ugly compared to the the first... especially in the dark.
• NerdIIINerdIII Join Date: 2003-04-05 Member: 15230Members
The new version looks cool... nice rounded corners, but pleeeeeese get rid of often used WALL textures. This is a ship hull, not a concrete bunker

If you can find a better hull texture, please let me know.. I agree, most of the metallic textures (both from ns and valve) look bad on a hull, but since I'm not an artist, that's all I have to choose from. If somebody wants to design a custom hull metal texture to go on this thing, by all means.

I like it. As Ollj said it looks like a sea turtle, but that's not a bad thing.

Alright kiddos, version 3 - rip it apart. But don't talk to me about textures unless you can get me better ones.. there are only so many metallic hull-able textures in the wads (including Fam's addon NS wad pack), and now I've tried all of them, so either pick from what you've seen so far or get me some new ones.

Changes:
-engines on the side
-better wings, Star Wars - Lambda Shuttle styled
-bigger overall (will be better hollowed)
-cargo door in the rear
-textures

Wow, definitely the best iteration yet, in my opinion. Doesn't look like a sea turtle anymore though.

*cough*textures*cough*

Are you making this just for yourself, or releasing it as a community prefab?

I think a nice big PS coming out of it's rear would look sexy
Do that and retexture it and you have a winner.

PS? Granted I just woke up, but my brain is not translating that acronym..

And what did I say about textures? There aren't any more! There are only so many metallic textures that could possibly be used as a ship hull, and I've tried all of them now. If you know a texture that would look better, post its name and I'll try it, or if you have or can draw a custom on, post that, but as far as standard wad textures go, that's all, folks.

You can try here, http://www.planethalflife.com/studio/textures.asp. I've never've been to the site myself, but it appears there are many free and possibly appropriate textures available.
