Ns_sync is lost forever

I'm suicidal
It almost doesn't seem real. After I put the past 3 months into ns_sync, I was so close to showing you all a new batch of photo's showing off the mess hall, first hive, second hive, landing pods, command center, and the improved sync transport. I was one day away. I set my computer to compile the other night...so eager to see everything fully lit and cohesive for the first time. so close to something that could be playable in the next beta test...and with delight i set my computer to compile the other night.

well guess what. My HD crashed. I've lost everything. And I mean everything. All my textures, all my designs, all the hours of freakin mapping and mapping and mapping. everyone probably thought i was dead because i've been mapping/texturing so god damn much.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the last backup of my PC i have is from march. All I have is basically the last update you all saw from me. how depressing is that...I don't even know where to start over again...I don't know if I want to start...I just want to go sit in the corner and cry. over 160 hours of work down the drain. because of some stupid ####### hardware crash. why couldn't it be my mother board or my RAM or something...why my damn Hard drive?? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!! what a horrid horrid day.

holy #### ! All is lost ? you didn't gave any1 else the rmf file ? I understand you can't/don't want to start over again, I would just let it rest for a couple of days, do something else, then you can start working on it again :/

omg, i feel so sorry for you, my new hard drive crashed recently, and i lost all on it, but luckily i kept important stuff on my old hard drive just in case, i feel for you.

A friend of mine recently suffered a hd "crash" which, after some experimentation, we got to work again. Retrieve your drive from the trash can, plug it in, and try to boot the computer a bunch of times, each time holding the drive in a different position. It's weird, but sometimes when a hard drive crashes, it's not the actual platters that are broken, it's the mechanism that reads them. So holding the drive in different positions will let the reading arm fall in different places by default, making it more likely to read some part of the boot sector and get going at least long enough for you to dump your stuff onto another drive.

If that doesn't work, then yeah, it's really gone. sorry man.

BadMofo - you can also try taking it to a local computer shop. Many offer data recovery services for a fee; it could be worth your while rather than starting over on everything.

    I feel sorry for you

Take it into a computer shop and have them recover what's recoverable, I'm pretty sure you can always find somewhere that will do this service for you. It would deffinately be worth your while, just imagine how much you would have to pay someone to do the work you've done. At $15 an hour that's $2400, in comparison getting your hard drive recovered is cheap

Ouch, I know how you feel - my second map went down the drain with a crash, too (I lost the first one to a virus...).

I really hope you'll be able to retrieve the data.
    Good luck!

If the HD recovery services can't retrieve your old work for you, then I suggest going in a different direction with what you have. Trying to redo all of it will drive you nuts with boredom and tedium, it'll just be torture. I think your last update was just the outer areas and hangar bays, so create a different interior than the one you did over the last few months. Just don't toss out those cool areas you had, they were excellent and deserve being given a chance to shine.

AH man! That is nuts... I was so hoping you were going to say, but luckily Cliff has a back up copy thats from a couple weeks ago or something..... Im sorry that happened to you, maybe youll get your stuff back through what the others suggested, I hope so. Good luck

What a shame NS_SYNC is one of the more promising maps. Let this be a lesson to us all, modern hard drives are cheap and nasty, backup your work regularly (or get a RAID system).

I can barely imagine how gutted you must be badmofo, I know how down I get when I only lost only two weeks work.

Oh man. I almost had this happen to me two weeks ago (I DID lose data, but nothing too crucial).

Badmofo, retrieve your hard drive immediately and get an expert to pull the data off of it for you. If you want, you can send it to me and my friend will do some work on it (he does it for a living and was able to recover lots of data for me).

Lastly, what about a .bsp decompiler? Would that let you get your map back, assuming you have any .bsps still that you sent anyone?

    :( you have my sympathies.

a bsp decompiler would not be a good solution because they don't really work all that well. he'd almost have to redo the map and just use the decompile as a guide.

I too recommend getting a hard drive data guru guy to yank off your rmf's (and don't forget that all important porn collection!) off the dead hard drive - it'll be a thousand times worth it as you'll save time and you'll be overjoyed that you don't have to start the map over.

    Good luck...

    /me backs up work... now.

That's horrible news, must be awful having to put up with it. :/ Best of luck.

thanx guys...i appreciate the support but it still sux...i feel like i never wanna map again.

as for the HD...I live with a computer tech (sp?). And all my friends are computer tech's. We all sat down and tried to recover stuff off the drive for like 12 hours straight. We got some stuff...mostly crap I didn't even need. I even got some of the rmf's back but unfortunately nothing of sync's was retrievable...i mean it looked like the HD was run over with a magnet...we're talking like 5% of the files were retreivable and that's it.

I would still suggest taking it into a professional shop, if only for a second opinion. There are other ways of getting the data back.

my friend dropped it off today at this store we both trust...we're seeing if they can do anything but we're not keeping our hopes up

As Monse said there are companies who specialise specifically on recovery of data from crashed hard disc's. They just open the HD up in a cleanroom and grab the files etc and burn them to CD for you

I feel for u. I had an hd wiped out by a trying to install linux on a wierd config. Luckily the dirve that got wiped was my big games drive. C:, which had my os, and all my other important data was fixed by hooking it up to another comp. Still i spent a good long while finding i'd lost insertlostprogramname and re-instaling it.

Its always like this. Just when you think everything is alright, something bad happens. I can't tell you how many times this kind of thing has happend to me as well. I write alot, mostly for hobby. I wrote a very long and detailed paper for a course of mine, and It was quite good. Foolishly, I didn't save in a very long time, and what do you know? My computer decides to crash and I lose all of what I wrote...It was more of my mistake, but still...
Your's is just plain ol bad luck, and I feel for ya buddy. Best of luck getting your files back.

I feel very sympathetic for you. I know how it feels to loose work.

There may still be a chance though. Don't give up.

don't worry cliff...i'm not giving up. I'll restart from the last map I have backed up...but just not yet. I need a little break. This whole thing has really worn me out.

Well... not much to do about it...
I wish you a lot of good luck on
your next attempt to finish sync.
But do also look at the bright side,
    You've learned yourself and probably
quite a few other people a worthy lesson.
Just don't give up, you can do this
