3ds Max - exspensive, but WAY worth the money (3-4,000 $USD)
Milkshape - Cheap, and WELL worth the cash, but not anywhere near as powerful as 3ds

Ghost, you can get a free 30 day trial of Milkshape, after the 30 days, the save functions are locked. Go to the link Delarosa posted and download it..if you like it, you send them 20 bucks , they give you a keycode, and it unlocks it again permanently..

If it's not specifically Half Life models you want to make, there are loads of free or cheap modellers out there that you can have a go at btw..

Check the modelling 101 sticky at the top of the board, and have a look at this thread..

    <a href='http://www.somethingleet.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=12045' target='_blank'>http://www.somethingleet.com/forum/showthr...?threadid=12045</a>

I've been checking out a few of these, and so far this is my personal favourite..

    <a href='http://www.blender3d.org' target='_blank'>http://www.blender3d.org</a>

Also, you can get "educational" versions of most of the top-end programs ( Maya, Softimage etc ), but they tend to use unique file formats or have watermarks over finished images, to stop you using them for commercial purposes..

Check the sticky thread which contains loads of tutorials and sources. It tells you what you need to model.

Maya retails for 15k. And I think that's Pounds Sterling, not $$$.

I am afraid that it is 20 dollars in American(I believe). 3DS Max is much better over all, but Milkshape is still effective enough for most models. There is also Gmax, which is 3DS Max with less features but was released for game modifications(I don't know much more about it, I never really used it).

i don't recommend Gmax, because you have to go through 3-4 programs to get it into H-L..

Gmax -to- Tempest (Q3) -to- Milkshaped -to- HL

taht's the Gmax alternative, you still end up buying Milkshape....
