3d studio max is retail software.

Gmax is a free alternative, but you can't save in any suitable format for half-life use.

Your other option is Maya.

In case anyone was pondering it... there is no warez talk allowed in these forums. Suggesting alternatives is fine.

Milkshape is the BEST alternitave to Max or Maya.

You can use gmax, then export the file in a format Milkshape can read and then use MS to finish it off. It's what I'd do if I could convince my heap of junk computer to run gmax for more than ten minutes at a time.

I'll take milkshape! 3d Max was my first choice but what the heck!

Actually, a related question:

Given that I run win98 and the current version of 3DSMax requires an NT-based OS, presumably older versions that I could run would be rather less expensive (places clearing old stock, perhaps) than the latest version. Any ideas if I'm right about this, and if so any pointers for where I might look?

Souris, I ran Max5 on Win98 (recently upgraded to 2k) with no problems. Maya 4.5 does require NT/2k or higher, though.

IIRC I looked into BUYING 3dsmax, and it was ridiculously expensive
Best alternative is to do what Souris said.

Milkshape costs money too. That kinda defeats the purpose of what I wanted, which is an *dumdumdum* illega'l copy of 3d max. Ill try gmax again.

Is $20 really too much to pay to stay legal?

And here I asked people nicely not to talk about warez. If it's illegal, it doesn't belong on these forums, darrenjm.
