Starcraft Zerg Ultralisk In Progress

Pvt_HudsonPvt_Hudson Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 2019Members
<div class="IPBDescription">early stage</div> the mutalisk animation is almost done. So i started the ultralisk model. Just finished the left legs. ( I'm only gonna model the left side, then duplicate it for the right side. )
the reference i used is how the unit looks in the actual starcraft game, and the unit shot in the starcraft manual, under the zerg unit description section, as well as the concept sketch found in the starcraft manual. And no, i didn't use the starcraft ghost reference this time as I found 3D render for ultra in Ghost is not very accurate. ( the models are not done by blizzard as i heard )
the release date of this model is unknown. My final exams start next week. but i will try to work on it whenever i can.
( desert combat mod 0.3 is also gonna take away some of my time this weekend <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> )

    SC Model pack here we come....

    This is gonna be awesome. So far, we've got the Ultralisk, Hydralisk, Mutalisk, and Drone...and the Marine. All we need now is Firebat for HA, and a Zergling for Skulk. And the Overmind for the hive =P

    well, after the regular marine is released, all we need to do is to edit the model, then we have firebat. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
    shouldn be easy job.

    i think (since the hive hangs) that the starcraft replacement hive should be either an overlord OR an upsidedown overmind <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Or, how about an infested kerrigan in an overgrown zerg incubation apparatus? I dunno, I just think it'd be cool to walk by thing hanging egg with someone as creepy looking as Kerrigan glaring at you...

    Overmind as the hive? What are you thinking?? <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Watch the cinematics and you'll see that the Overmind is like... 1000x bigger than a Carrier (in the cinematic)

    Ok guys this is a cerebrate

    <img src='http://www.ace-dog.com/brazos/sessionlogs/Images/Cerebrate.gif' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

    That would not fit as a hive...

    Now this is a hive

    <img src='http://www.battle.net/images/battle/scc/zerg/pix/buildings/adv/hive.gif' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

    You could have it hang from those 3 arms, or you could turn it upsidedown and hang it from the ceiling...

    the hive is best choice hanging upside down,i saw couple SC:BW menu pictures where they do that on installations,but their sticked to the surface thought..

    I think actually that having a gross-looking pulsating blobby thing havging from the ceiling (by strands or tentacles or something) would look good. Maybe give it a little birth canal thingy sticking out too, so it's clear it can hatch aliens.
  • RotA_PlagueRotA_Plague Join Date: 2002-11-03 Member: 6768Members
    The hive would have to be slightly differnt upside down due to the hive doesn't litterally, always touch the ceiling. It touches the ceiling with those strands while the maine body hangs and if you were to make it full, you would have people hiding on top the hive in the model(their view isn't good but they remain unseen).

    I like the idea of the hive from Starcraft turned upside-down and having the aliens sorta "spawn" from the centre. Also the ultralisk would be fantastic for the onos, excellent work <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Yick, that's the SC:G Ultralisk? I *definitely* agree with the decision to base it on the original SC version, then. Bleh, ugleh!

    Looking forward to see more progress on this one. (:

    Justice calls... here comes the blizzard! sup coil the original SC ultralisk is the same as the ghost 1, and that is because you can't exactly see the ultralisk as clear from rts view but its pretty much the same. Prepare to meet : <img src='http://members.shaw.ca/brianton/commandconsole.gif' border='0' alt='user posted image'> <img src='http://members.shaw.ca/brianton/sc.gif' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

    I quite disagree... check out <a href='http://www.battle.net/scc/zerg/units/ultralisk.shtml' target='_blank'>this page</a>, the unit description of the Ultralisk. Most importantly, note the movement animation and the unit portrait. The face is distinctly different, and the movement implies a different leg structure than the one of the Ghost model. I think Hudson's heading in the right direction.

    -edit- also note the "health-indicator" outline in <a href='http://www.battle.net/images/battle/scc/zerg/pix/units/screenshots/u01.jpg' target='_blank'>this picture</a> - it shows a bit of the Ultralisk's rear leg morphology.

    My only regret is having to shrink the Ultralisk to Onos size. (:

    i agree with u on everything u said coil, ( that 's why i choose to model after the official blizzard material instead of starcraft ghost version. ) , except one thing--- ultra's face.
    I have done some looking around. the unit portrait in starcraft game is not very consistent with all the other blizzard stuff ( like in teh manual and concept art ). the biggest difference is teh mouth. in most of the blizzard reference material, the mouth is a distinct 2 piece structure--- upper lip and lower lip. But as u can see in the unit portrait, the mouth is sort of weird, there is no upper lip and lower lip. :/
    so i think in my final version of this model, the face u see will NOT look the same as the unit portrait.
    i basically model the face after the 2 concept sketch and the unit shot under the zerg unit description section in starcraft manual.
