Can't Play Due To "custom Game"

I just dl'ed and installed NS last night. Upon trying to connect to any multiplayer game over the net, it states that i need to "install the custom game before joining the custom game".

What exactly does this mean? What can i do to fix this so i can play?

dont use you desktop short cut to play NS use your start menu or something else

Genie is correct - Delete the NS shortcut off of your desktop, and instead use the shortcut in:

Start | Programs | Natural Selection | Launch Natural Selection

The installer-created desktop shortcut has a bug that will cause your error...

Well now that i'm not getting that error message anymore, now it won't seem to connect.

Using:
AMD Athlon 1.0 ghz
512 DDR RAM
64 MB 3D Hercules 4500
SB Live soundcard

Open GL Graphics set on a higher-end middle resolution.....

What could be the problem? I double click a server, then it says loading, and a white box appears in the upper left hand side...and it just sits there and does nothing after several minutes.....

Would really like to try this game out!!!!

I forgot to also add, i Have the Half-life retail version.....Not the CS retail...

And of course, i also forgot to add that i'm unfortunately using ME, although i haven't had the problems with it other people have =)

Counter Strike works fine on my computer and DoD works perfectly....

Hmmm... you are using the ingame browser and are sure you have your NS graphics set to OpenGL (and not 'software video' mode - it will not work in software)?

Do this: start a game of NS and open the console, then type:

connect 128.194.11.209

This will connect you to the 'Now we Donce' server and give us a clue if you are having server-browsing issues or configuration issues... I am tracking this topic now if you reply back I'll get an email and be able to help you.

Well listen to this now.

I checked my graphics. They're on OpenGL, set to default, running at a reso of 1024x

I opened NS. Clicked console. And it froze on me.

I shut it down, rebooted, opened up NS, Multiplayer, Internet Games, Updated, double-clicked on a server.
This sent me to the "loading...." screen.....after a few moments that same white box appeared in the upper left hand corner...and after about 2 minutes it finally said "could not connect". I tried another server and it did the same thing.

I have no problem running Day of Defeat, as my roommate played for a while on it today. This leads me to believe it's a problem within the NS.

Perhaps i should un/reinstall?

Yes. delete your NS directory, then reinstall. Let us know how it goes.

After reinstalling it twice now, it still will not work.

The fact that i can't even get into console bothers me.

Never heard of this MonsieurEvil?

Any other suggestions? Could there be a conflict within some hardware? I remember when i bought Tribes2 that it would work on my parents computer but not mine, until i got a new motherboard and graphics card put in..then it did.

I'm not sure what constitutes up to date graphics drivers in a hercules 4500, to be honest, so I am assuming you are? And your HL video driver is set to 'default' and not '3d mini'?

ME isn't exactly the hottest OS around, it gives me lots of problems and doesn't like anything I do in HL what so ever, but having ME puts you into a whole extra class of problems, I know because I have to use it...one of the problems I have is when NS starts loading into a server, the display gets waay distorted, but if am very patient (lots of that with ME) then eventually I can hear ready room sounds...try to give it a good long wait, thats my suggestion

I had problems with that half-life own browser few years ago, when i was playing CS.

Try <a href='http://www.udpsoft.com/eye/' target='_blank'>The All Seeing Eye</a>. It works great and is easy to use.
Iam sure that after you have tryed that program, you dont want to use HL own browser ever again <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'>

Yes, i checked out the drivers for my vid card last night as well and they are the most recent available ( even though i really need a new card soon, oh well). And yes, the settings are on OpenGL and set to default. Like i said, DoD and Counterstrike have never had problems with the graphics.

Yes, sometimes on startup for DoD the video gets weird but then the soudns start and the game begins normally. However, this has not happened once with NS. It simply takes me to the loading screen, or to a "black box" which covers part of my desk top (which happens with DoD sometimes) but still doesn't take me anywhere.....

What is "the all seeing eye"? I went to the page and it costs something? I really don't have money to be spending on game unfortunately so that isn't an option unless i read something wrong.

Quick question.
When it asked "Install with 32 bit color" or somesuch what did you choose?

If yes? Then try installing without 32 bit or simply remove the command line in the shortcut.

That's right, i forgot to mention that.

The very first time i installed the game, i put the 32-bit on, but the second and third time i took it off. It has no effect.

Yes if you want to register it then it cost 10$.
But you can use that unregistered version. With registered version, you will have some extra stuff, but unregistered version works great.

Shortly it is a program which will search servers for any multiplayer game.

Alright, well guess what, NOW IT'S WORKING...sort of...

I made no changes.....BUT..my roommates finally told me that there were some problems with DoD recently.....and DoD was going fine today...and it ried NS..and it WORKED......sort of....

I couldn't connect to a regular server.....on my list..so i tried

connect 128.194.11.209

That worked, i got to the server, but i was lagging at 4095..pretty bad....It couldn't have been my side, i'm on an ethernet connection in my apartment....so i went back and tried some more servers.....and i would be "connecting".....and it would take forever....i'd start hearing sounds.....it would sya in the console to choose a team..choose a tream...choose a team.....a team ahs been chosen for you...

To me it looks like i'm IN the game..but the lag is so bad i can't see that i'm in the game.....

I dropped my resolution down a little bit but now have no idea what i could do to keep up the progress....
