Brief Glimpse Of Veil Beta 5

Also applies to Eclipse 1.1
I've spent the last day playing around with lighting compiles in Veil, and the same parameters and settings will be passed back over to Eclipse. The end result in Veil is as follows:

This is a central resource nozzle in Veil - it is the resurrection of the old Eclipse marine spawn as seen in the NS installer. I'm going to run a full compile of Eclipse overnight with the new settings and see how it turns out. Looks to be a much darker, more intimidating feel throughout.

That is looking very nice; I always like those diagonal support struts, and I'm glad they'll be making a comeback appearance. As for the lighting, it certainly throws in a lot of contrast and atmosphere. However, although I don't know how exactly you're changing the brightness values and what specific light textures you're altering, I could see this making places like the bend in the hall between Station Access East and Access Corridor 1A a bit too dark. I want some screens of Eclipse under the new lighting tomorrow .

Don't worry, I hope to jazz up Eclipse quite a bit in the process of doing this. There are definitely some darker areas I'm worried about, and I'll be toying around with some extra accent lighting to compensate for any areas that get -too- dark.

While the lighting and architecture are very nice, don't you think you make skulk wall/ceiling walking a bit too difficult? That's something that has always nagged me with eclipse....

We are hoping to see a change in 1.1 skulk wallwalking anyway.

It looks great, beyond the HL engine even, but may i suggest having one of those red lights flicker? adds to the atmosphere and draws the eye away, perfect for a skulk to sneak up and take a bite

    Looks very good!

Just one *very small* thing; the "grate" that is on the support_lab3 texture is cut by a diagonal polygon, looks a bit weird in my opinion, compared to the rest that is perfect work.

Andrew, that is some f'kin sexy lighting you got there.
The light on the walls make it look very good.

One suggestion: that ceiling is the perfect spot to put in a vent so skulks can drop on unsuspecting marine's head. Add a few wires, it's gonna be perfect.

    Way to go man.
    Keep up the good work.

An incredible improvement to the already dead sexy beta I saw last. Great work, as usual.

Accidentally botched the Eclipse compile, unfortunately. Problems with the overlay tool resulted in some ugly after-effects. My own damn fault, though.

    Excellent, KFS as always.

I still remember when that was the Eclipse marine spawn. Ahh, nostalgia...

Eclipse was enough dark for my own taste, but maybe I should take a look to the new Eclipse... Veil looks indeed kewl... What lightning parameters have you modified?

uuuh, with that modified RAD (the overlay thing) I'm sure you've reduced the entity count by a lot

Care to share what these "settings" you're using are? I'm guessing -smooth and -bounce?

So true. I swear, the next time I hear someone say a map looks "just like Eclipse" because it uses the wall_lab textures, I'm going to reach through my monitor and strangle them.

which maps of yours can make it in with a release?
  • BlackPantherBlackPanther Join Date: 2002-02-11 Member: 197Members
I like the eclipse textures a lot.. but my map is more themed like NS_HERA then NS_Eclipse (YES EVEN THOUGH THEY USE THE SAME TEXTURE SET) but there are a lot of differences on how they are used.
But i only used them in the marine spawn and the main junction of the map (think holoroom in hera). Besides that, i use the texture scheme of the cargo area of ns_nothing.

wow.. someone really has a hard time detecting sarcasm. if i didn't point it out enough when i says "seriously though," at least the ""elite" speak" would have given it away. in case you think i was serious: i know this is a sequel to eclipse, i know its the same author.

back to the topic though, i hope the whole map looks as good as that kfs
