The Infamous Hitbox

Anyone know how to get past it?
Ok, now I've done a full forum search and whilst there's been a lot of talk about the hitbox bug on marines I've found little that actually indicates how to negate it. I ask this because I'm just sick and tired of crouching marines knifing me
So my plea goes out: Does anyone here know how do hit those crouching marines? Barring that, does anyone know the best place to hit them?

Uhh, what exactly is this "hitbox bug" everyone is going on about? Just can't figure it out and it bugs me so if anyone could clarify this i'd appreciate it.

When marines are crouching it's v.difficult to hit them with the skulk bite, the marine hitbox is buggy when they crouch. You encounter this mainly in vents, but also when marines crouch in a room courner.

i dont experiance this with marines crouching in open areas, corners etc. however in vents i do. one way is hold down bite and keep tapping jump with your bite. kills them most of the time, unless its that **** vent in front of marine base in nancy. that vent makes marines invincible to any melee.

This post made me fire up Halflife Model Viewer, and check out the models, here are someinteresting things I've found out:
The entire upper-torso region (chest, shoulders, head, AND the space above the shoulders, up to the height of the head) is one big hitbox on a HA dude!
And when he crouches, it seems to be one big mess of hitboxes.. (with the same feature as above)
The Standard marine had a laarge big box, expanding out from his back - I figure that's where the JP goes.
When he ducks, its just a mess again..

I wonder if the bug is caused by different hitboxes interfering with each other..
    If that's the case:
    Attack JP'ers/LAs in the back.
Attack HA marines in the head.

    Pure speculation though.

its 2 things: a crouched marine is lower than his model & skulks on walls "bite" slightly higher than if they were on the floor. So either: crouch whilst biting, jump up and down whilst biting, look down and bite.

It's an explanation of why it happens by Wolfwings and how to overcome it. Basically just hold down crouch yourself and bite the marine as per normal

QUOTE

Meaning, for skulkerrific fun when attacking, hold down your crouch button at all times to take out the bits that make invinci-marining that much easier. Or for those who know the console, bind CAPS LOCK to toggle crouching, and leave yourself crouched when moving to chomp.

Thankyou THANKYOU Phoenix, I am FOREVER in your debt! The thread you linked me to had everything I needed to know, I am eternally thankful

Another easy kill is to just leap into them. Close in as quick as you can, hold crouch, and leap right into them. You'll bring them down faster then bite every will.

Leap will not hit either when bite cannot strike the hitbox.

In some places, marines are virtually invincible. The tiny tiny vent outside the marine spawn in ns_nancy is one of them; only area effect attacks and projectiles can hurt a marine there. If you enter that vent, prepare to be knifed.

Another thing with the bug. Its near impossible to hit a marine on a ladder from below him.
  • AIRinc_FaReZAIRinc_FaReZ Join Date: 2003-03-21 Member: 14763Members
unless you leap from below him. leaping at a marine from below a ladder = instagib. in reply to taboofires' post, leap DOES hit in vents when bite doesnt. except maybe in nancy vent.

Well, there was a way discovered before crouching to get around this. You can look down at a downwards angle and bite. This will hit crouching marines provided you do it properly. It gets them in vents or on the ground. Not sure about ladders. Personally I don't like losing speed when playing Skulk. I need all of the speed I can get. More speed = More marines dead. Of course those with very good aim and quick reactions will be able to hit you a lot, but the more speed you have, the less of a chance there will be that they hit you. Plus I'm more into the "Drop on a group of 4 marines from the celing" style. You can usually get 1 or 2, 3 or all of them if you're lucky before they catch you. But I guess you can do it while crouching.

Here is a fun trick to do with crouching though..

Run as a skulk while contionously tapping your crouch button. Since crouching seems to reset the walking sound or something, you can turn 1 skulk into 3 skulks. Good players or people with headphones will be able to tell the difference from the sound of 1 Skulk coming and 3 Skulks coming. This is a nifty little trick that will throw them off. Of course it only makes you sound like 3 Skulks... Doesn't actually make you into 3 Skulks..

i just hold down crouch while attacking in vents and it usually works... either that or i dont get caught in the vents with a rine sine thay hold the advantage with ranged weapons.
  • AmorphousAmorphous Join Date: 2002-12-20 Member: 11249Members
I was with a gorge in the vents on one map doing that. I did that trick and he threw a babler or two. It scared the crap out of them. Then he threw a whole mess of them and i charged. The last thing the rines saw was me leaping from head to head.

Yea, on a ladder, looking straight up , ive missed like 7x in a row. Apparently you bite behind him officially. I guess looking lower would be ok.

Try to avoid going against marines on ladders from the bottom. If you absolutely MUST, go abit off the ladder, so your biting his side. Keep moving around him madly (over his head around him) while biting. You might score a kill.
