This is a strat my team encountered last game I played.
Okay. We were marine (obviously) and the Aliens had all 3 hives. We got through and attacked the 3rd hive, taking it. Then the commander build tons of turrets there, of course. But then he built an extra comm chair and infantry spawns there.
Shortly after, the aliens took over our starting base and we were forced to relocate to the 3rd hive, building all the buildings you'd find in a starting marine base. We eventually won the game, due to their lack of a 3rd hive and their inability to take our well-fortified base.
The point is, when you take a hive as marines late game, you might want to convert it to a secondary, backup base. It's very helpful and you can lead attacks from either base.

in the late game though, fighting back against 3 hive aliens. i wouldnt say to bother dropping a CC/IP's in the new hive since your resources should be very precious at that point and that 55 resources could be a pair of hmgs or a level 3 weapons upgrade. as long as your commander isnt inept, he can always recycle the starting base's phasegate and drop a CC in the occupied hive long before his chair is destroyed.
Yeah, really... Those must have been some bad aliens? Did you get rushed with onos?
