The Relocation Strategy.

This is a strat my team encountered last game I played.

Okay. We were marine (obviously) and the Aliens had all 3 hives. We got through and attacked the 3rd hive, taking it. Then the commander build tons of turrets there, of course. But then he built an extra comm chair and infantry spawns there.

Shortly after, the aliens took over our starting base and we were forced to relocate to the 3rd hive, building all the buildings you'd find in a starting marine base. We eventually won the game, due to their lack of a 3rd hive and their inability to take our well-fortified base.

The point is, when you take a hive as marines late game, you might want to convert it to a secondary, backup base. It's very helpful and you can lead attacks from either base.

generally when people speak of "relocation" theyre talking before anything more than say, one IP is built in the starting base. in your case, its more of just taking, and occupying a hive. if the aliens had all 3 hives, and dropped your main base, and couldnt finish off the team... they werent a very impressive team. either that or all the marines on your team were adept players and well tech'd. generally if you want to build into that 2nd base, a phase gate will suffice to make the two locations into one easier defended area. then feel free to turret it up, or mine it defending on the presence of fades/intelligent gorges etc.

in the late game though, fighting back against 3 hive aliens. i wouldnt say to bother dropping a CC/IP's in the new hive since your resources should be very precious at that point and that 55 resources could be a pair of hmgs or a level 3 weapons upgrade. as long as your commander isnt inept, he can always recycle the starting base's phasegate and drop a CC in the occupied hive long before his chair is destroyed.

If the aliens can't win when given 2 hives for a considerable amount of time, it's their own fault. Fades have more than enough firepower to wear down your base, no matter how long it takes. If the aliens have two hives, the marine goal is to get them down to only one ASAP, not sit there and camp. 3 hives is just gravy, and just makes the game end faster.

if they can't kick you out of the 3rd hive then it's there problem, but if we have 2 hives and your start, then you should be screwed.
