    You have to be in the cloud to get it's protective bonus.

    If you are standing in an active cloud, you will see a little message at the bottom of your screen saying something about the Umbra Cloud. The actual protective effect sometimes lasts longer than the Umbra cloud graphical effect itself.

    By the way, loved Boondock Saints...<!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    You know you're in umbra when a message at the bottom of the screen reads "In Umbra." Make sure to spray more umbra before the last one runs out.

    Note: Even marines can be in umbra (like it matters)

    It does matter! If you umbra a marine or a turret when they shoot the umbra still takes effect.

    Well, im pretty sure it does, but when you umbra you should be in there biting anyway

    But if marine runs in umbra with his knife/welder out umbra doesn't protect you against those attacks.
    It doesn't protect you from grenades either.

    Umbra for marines can be important when friendly fire is concerned. I dont think I need to elaborate.

    for umbra, all you hve to make sure is that the path of the bullets to you goes through the umbra
    you can either be in the umbra:

    <b>NOTE</b>: Nice picture, but this isn't quite right. Umbra ONLY protects players inside it. It will not block or slow bullets that pass through it that then hit a player outside of the umbra.

    Yes. Its also wrong. You have to be <b>in</b> the umbra cloud to get it's cover. You will see a message at the bottom of the screen saying 'in umbra'.

    Standing behind it will get you killed <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I think they should change it so that you dont have to be <i>in</i> the cloud for it to be of any use. It'd be a lot more viable for escaping that way.

    Actually, you CANNOT be behind an umbra cloud and take cover from it. You have to be inside it. In other words, if you umbra half way down a corridor and fly to one end, if someone shoots at you from the other side, with the shots flying through the cloud, you take full damage. The only situation you get the benefit of umbra from is when it says "in umbra" at the bottom of the screen.

    WTH???

    that doesnt make any sense

    umbra blocks bullets yes?

    so where do the bullets come from if you take full damage behind the umbra?

    hmm?

    Suspension of disbelief. Umbra would be too powerful if it blocked any shots passing thru it. I'm sure someone can come up with a fluff reason why.

    It could be balanced but its probably just too hard to code.

    ok. it doesnt block every bullet, but surely, standing behind a concrete bunker is just as effective as standing in a concrete bunker?

    Dreads hit on the other reason. Its far easier to code it the way it is now then the way you propose.

    Umbra doesn't 'block' bullets... The nano-bac in the Umbra cloud latch onto Kharaa skin forming a short lived (and not entirely perfect) reflec armour layer.

    If you're not in the umbra cloud, then it's not forming that layer.

    There you go. Makes perfect sense to me <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I really don't think this one's that hard to code, and I seem to remember reading somewhere that this is a balance issue. Think about it - it IS a balance issue. It's not balanced to be able to block a passageway with umbra for the benefit of fades at the other end.

    And yes, standing inside a concrete bunker is the same as behind it, but this is a game, and in this game gameplay takes precedence over realism (thank god).
