I've had the exact same problem.. and I'll be glad to help you get rid of it <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

Yup, MSN and messanger is two different things.. the lovely thing about messanger is it's built into every Win XP/2000 system.. a lovely adition that we all wanted /sarcasm =/

To get rid of it simply do this

    1 Open Control Panel
    2 Open Administrative Tools
    3 Open Services
    4 Scroll down to Messanger
    5 Disable it!!!!!!!!!
6 Feel the lovely power of NEVER SEEING THOSE freaking THINGS EVER AGAIN!!!

    Glad to be of assistance <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

And then run a firewall like a proper citizen so that it would not have been an issue in the first place. And then go to the Readyroom Windows 2000/XP tuning guide to follow steps that would have prevented this as well for performance-improvement reasons...

    <a href='http://www.readyroom.org/perfgde_1.html' target='_blank'>Readyroom.org Windows 2000/Xp Tuning Guide</a>

The reason that messenger service is on by default in Windows 2000 and XP pro is because those are business OS', and that service is often used heavily in a business environment. Your PC has no way to know it was installed in your living room instead of a cubicle. Just to spike the rhetoric...

I got Kazaa and the same problem. I hope Kazaa gets outlawed so my sis will delete it.

EDIT-Errr how do we handle this for Windows XP Home edition? Home doesn't contain adminastrative tools.

    1. Click Start, then Run
    2. Enter 'services.msc' and click 'ok'.
    3. Select the Alerter service and set it to 'manual', then click 'stop'.
    4. Select the Messenger service and set it to 'manual', then click 'stop'.

Unless you are truly sure, you should never set a service to 'disabled'. If you do that to teh wrong service you can prevent your PC from booting correctly. Always set to 'manual' when in doubt.

(these steps above apply to all versions of XP as well as Win2000).

I used to have the same problem. Funny thing was the ONLY pop-ups I got were for a one that basically GETS RID OF pop-ups. Isn't it great <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> .
