I must say the map looks really sweet but i must ask.:( Aint the air lock with suit from the movie 2001 from there promo material as in that case so is it copyrighted bye that movie company.:( Iam an really scifii buff and have an whole bunch of scifi movies and books but i recognise the airlock and suit from an movie but cant put the finger on it. I dont want to be an creep but if you use stuff that is copyrighted so could it cause you trouble with your map in the future.:( And that would be only sad as the map is some really great looking piece of work. I hope you take this right as i dont want to be the creep here.:)
I think some of Relics textures are made to look like the interior of the ship from 'Alien' (Nostromo?). But since he hasn't actually ripped of any of their material it's probably safe(safer than my original aliens sign). I thinks some of those textures are probably based on NASA archive photos too. I vaugely remember the space suits in 2001 I thoght they has a more angular, less rounded helmet and were also less cluttered.

Cliff: No. I wouldn't dare do something like that. The texture is a composite of the following: 1 photo of a real Russian spacesuit (taken prior to an auction) 1 previous texture out of my ns_bast.wad (for behind the suit) 1 small piece of a NASA photo showing a hatch release 1 3D rendered door/wall touched up in Photopaint
I have all kinds of experience with copyright laws on images and sounds, as I work with this kind of issue on a daily basis. We also deal with copyright of our own images and software at work.
Chromeangel is correct about me taking a lot of inspiration from the original Alien movie, but I have been very careful not to use any images directly from the movie. The spacesuit and storage locker was composited to look similar to the spacesuit storage lockers from Alien, but are not copies, direct or otherwise.
*edit* Oh, there is another image (the little caution sign) in that texture, and it came from a photo I took at a pulp mill. :)
2001 was a very good movie. Lots of people said it was boring but I loved it Sorry, I know it doesn't relate! /fix BAST PWNS!
It explains it all why i recognised it from somewhere as iam an alien maniac and have seen all the alien movies about one million times. And as you explined so can you yust be proud as i thought it was an texture made out of promo material as that means that it was really good. Where do you work daily relic software hardware? The shots are awesome!!! I'm looking forward to see this map in action!
I really hate to be the critcal ### around here, but I believe that, although the screenies are really great, the spacesuits everyone else seems to love don't really fit in. They're simply too detailed and would pop out in the 'low' poly environment HL forces us to create.
Cliff: I usually ask people if they want the long or the short answer to what I do, career-wise. The long answer is as follows. My official title (although we don't really use titles at work) is Creative Director, and I'm a partner at a training consulting/development firm that specializes in technical training for industry. I have to wear a lot of hats. Everyone where I work does, since we are a relatively small (in personnel) company. Among the things I do are: graphic design, interface design, instructional design, multimedia programming, sound engineering, digital video production, post-processing, and editing, storyboarding, and some writing. My 'department' is responsible for creating computer-based courseware. If I tell the long answer to people who ask what I do at parties, I usually get blank stares by the end, so my short answer is that I'm a professional geek.

Okay, time for me to be critical of your work now that I've complimented you. First off, NemesisZero is right about how detailed the spacesuits are in relation with the environment. In addition I think the textures are not as consistent as they could be, since it seems to go from smooth beige panelling to cold gray metal rather abruptly, for example.
I think the problem doesn't really lie with the spacesuit texture being too detailed. The way I see it, the problem is that the texture next to it isn't detailed enough, and I plan to make a higher res, more detailed version of that texture to correct that situation. As far as the light plastic panels meeting dark gray metal, that's intentional for high contrast and visual interest.
If you have a hankering to know what Relic25's background is (or other NS team members, for that matter), be sure to check out these interviews at the RR:
There are lots of things like this at RR.org under the Special Features link, if you're just willing to explore. And browbeat Merkaba, Westward, Beaner, Jaydog, and JeffP into doing some interviews as well!
