    Which distro are you using ?

    If it's redhat 8.0 you need to install the compat library called compat-libstdc++-7.3-2.96.110.i386.rpm to be able to run NS.

    You might want to read the Sticky thread on linux ns server in the forum.
    Please also try to include the complete error message the next time.

    Not neccessarily true, although this seems to be a viable option. A softlink to the libstdc I did have worked for me.

    compat = compatibility

    (I'm not a guru so my answer might be slightly off, please correct me =))

    Linux (just as windows) runs off certain system files and if you compile a software (in this case NS) with ties a specific set of system files you need those system files to run NS. Those system files are not included in RH8.0 by default so you need to install them to provide backward *compatibility*.

    Im Lost Help!!!!

    I am running 8.0 and I need some help

    Well I run server linux distro flavours. And NS doesn't run on many of them.(gentoo or mandrake for an example) Currently RH is the only distro I've had luck getting NS to run on.(and yes I slack will run it as well) And yes to run it on RH you must update the compatable libstdc libs.

    For a RH system just use;

    up2date compat-libstdc++

    NS requires the compat lib (or the softlink), CS does not.

    If you use up2date it will take care of everything for you. If you download the RPM manually you will also have to install it manually.

    WHERE CAN I GET THE UP2DATE
  • biomassbiomass Join Date: 2003-03-15 Member: 14535Members, Constellation
    Then take my advice and get a free up2date account and perform the command that Nickoli suggested, it will keep your computer in good shape not just enable you to install the compay libraries.

    And if you're still stubborn and want to do things yourself you can download it here =)

    <a href='ftp://ftp.rpmfind.net/linux/redhat/8.0/en/os/i386/RedHat/RPMS/compat-libstdc++-7.3-2.96.110.i386.rpm' target='_blank'>ftp://ftp.rpmfind.net/linux/redhat/8.0/en...96.110.i386.rpm</a>

  • HtNickoliHtNickoli Join Date: 2002-11-24 Member: 9786Members
    Its part of RedHat. As root just type "up2date --list" to list all packages that are out of date. Or that need updating. Or "up2date --register" to register for the one year free up2date account. If you haven't done so already.

    I have a Debian server that has run NS with no problems. All I did was a base install, reboot added ssh, gdb, and an ftp server. Uploaded the HL, NS, and patch files to /usr/local/games/hlds/hlds_l and configured. I have never had an issue running this from day one, nor have I had any crashes that were not due to mine/turret spam. This is the most solid server I have ever seen. And with apt-get it stays up to date and secure. The only thing with Debian is most people are turned off by the lack of a pretty gui. The install is very easy if you are experienced in installing Linux without a gui (i.e RH 6.2 and below). Try it sometime. Nothing like a server using only 25MB ram and about 100 MB of disk space.

    Have you tried typing 'up2date', I think thats the command, otherwise 'man up2date' will show you how to use the command.

    Otherwise go <a href='http://www.nrh-up2date.org/' target='_blank'>here</a> for help on how to use it.

    *Edit*
    Specifically go <a href='http://www.nrh-up2date.org/cvs/docs/INSTALL' target='_blank'>here</a> to get it setup and use it

    Are you using a telnet/ssh window? if so just scroll up. Otherwise you can use the '| more'command to have text pause

    ex: cat file.foo | more

    this will display the contents of the file, then when the screen is full of text you can press enter for a single line at a time to display or you can hit space for the next page.

    cat file.foo | less

    Don't add the version #'s.

    It's;

    up2date compat-libstdc++

    NOT;

    up2date compat-libstdc++-7.3-2.98.110.i386.rpm
