independent of owning HL I mean,
I remember TFC had this where you were only given 3 maps but had everything else. Could NS do something like this?
In some ways, yes, but in other ways it would be impractical. The TFC demo I'm sure came with what was basically a stripped down Halflife. In fact, you could probably play NS so long as you had that demo (assuming it didn't have other locks implemented - just the 3 maps). Don't quote me on this of course. This would be at Valves or Sierras discretion. (Another thing would be WON server stuff.) See, NS doesn't really have much to gain with a demo, as the whole thing is free, in one sense.
BTW, I assume by demo, you mean to be included in a magazine or something so dial-uppers (or people that don't have halflife)* can try it.

EDIT: What I mean by demo is a shareware DOWNLOAD on one of the servers. It allows you to play NS WITHOUT buying Half life, but you would be restricted to only x number of maps.
However in hindsight: TFC was originally with Half Life right? So offering the demo was Sierra's way of saying "you may not like first person single player, but maybe our neat multiplayer will entice you!".

the only way this could ever happen is if valve and flayra got together and decided to make NS marketed in stores. Until then its not possible for this to happen being that flayra has no rights to distribute a jacked hl engine with a demo ns. It just wont happen. Now if ns is going on the market and we will see it in stores then it may happen. Not likely though. I dont recall seeing a CS demo. So why would NS get one.

When you bought HL tfc came with it. So in short. It was marketed in stores. My HL box specifically mentioned TFC. If thats not marketing i don't know what is.
I wounder if NS will ever be for sale? It happened with CS tho. It whould be cool tho if it did. Think of it, sure you gota pay BUT if the devs made money doing this it whould be there JOBS not a hobbie so they whould put more time into it and hence make it better.

Half-Life for $20? Try around $2-5. Its going on its 5th year birthday afterall
NS dosent use anything from Half-Life I think, not even the halflife.wad, so its pretty much just the Half-Life graphics engine runnning the thing. Could always buy the half-life engine, it can't be that expensive, I mean its built on the friggin Quake 1 engine!
Of course, there is the sneaky way of someone making the "unofficial" NS demo...
-Need a custom default .wad with sky, clipping, and trigger textures. -Delete the valve folder, minus the above .wad file. -Include the default sprites (I think NS still uses some of these?). -Include server files. -Hack something with WON, so Half-Life could be playable in multiplayer (duh). Can't use a fake WON ID, because anyone with the demo would have that WON ID.
