Fiction based in NS Chapter 1
This is part of the First Chapter of Shades of darkness. Don't know exactly how good it is. But here goes.

Shades of Darkness: Chapter 1

The dark hall looms before me. My squad behind me guns at the ready for anything. I don’t know what’s ahead, but I can hear command in my helmet ordering me to move forward. The radar blips ominously, telling me that we aren’t the only living beings in the hall.

Reluctantly I move forward, the red lights casting an eery shadow on the walls. I hear the click-click of claws on the metal. All at once, the red lights flicker and go out. The night vision goggles in my helmet come on and what I see scares the hell out of me. A group of about fifty skulk are filing into the hall…

“Fire!” screams Lt. Johnson, squad leader. “Command, requesting backup ASAP, we are being overcome by a large group of skulk!”

“Roger that Johnson, we are rerouting Smith’s squad to your position. ETA in ten minutes,” comes the response.

“Alright men, did you hear that?” asks Johnson in a rhetorical manner. “Ten minutes and we get support.”

“Yes sir!” is the answer in unison.

The skulk are coming ever closer, one makes a mad dash and takes out one of the marines before being cut down. Johnson takes aim, and fires at the nearest one. The bullet penetrates the eye and exits out the back of the head, sending it back to the hell spawn it was bred in. He checks his ammo, damn! Only twenty-five in the clip, and seventy-five in reserve.

All of a sudden the attack ceases with all the remaining aliens retreating out of the area. Johnson, still on the alert, turns around in time to dodge an incoming lerk attack. He hits the floor, spins and puts two bullets to the head of the flying menace.

“Sir, we have fades and an onos in the back. Where is that **** support?” yells Sgt. Peterson, the second in command.

“On their way. Ah, command, where is the support?” asks Johnson. “Our situation just escalated, we have a few fades and an onos in the area. I also spotted a few lerks floating around here somewhere.” Johnson fires, taking out a skulk crawling on the ceiling for a sneak attack.

“Hang tight Johnson, Smith is on his way, they ran into a small band of skulk and had to deal with them before they could continue. His new ETA is two minutes. In the meantime, I am getting you a big meal ready for when you get back here.”

“Well, you tell Smith if he doesn’t move his ****, he’s going to be a trash collector instead of a rescue team. We are about to get desperate,” replies Johnson as he fires at a charging fade.

“Roger that.”

Johnson checks his ammo again, only sixty bullets remaining. He looks around the hall. Nothing to see. Turning off the night vision goggles he enters map mode in the HUD of his helmet. According to the map, there should be a hall about three meters ahead. He switches the map view from normal to thermal to investigate the situation. It doesn’t look good, his squad is in the middle of a flaming ball of body mass, all comprised of alien life forms.

He decides to move. “Peterson! Get over here,” he yells. “How is your ammo?”

“I have plenty of ammo, when they took out Willis, I grabbed the extra, sorry for forgetting protocol but I needed it, seemed like a large waste,” replies Peterson.

“OK, good. You are going to be in the lead. You see that hall about three meters ahead? We are going to move there, we are like sitting ducks out here. Smith and his squad are coming from that hall, and we need to clear the way,” orders Johnson.

“Yes sir.”

“Men! We are going to move! Alex, you on the shotgun in the rear, Xero, you behind me, we need you out fast because we need your welder and can’t afford to lose it. Everyone else fall in behind Xero,” says Johnson. “Move out!”

The squad moves forms a solid line with Peterson in the lead, machinegun blaring away. They make progress, slow but steady progress. After about two minutes of moving they make it to the door. They open it and file in. Xero welds is shut behind them, keeping the Kharaa at bay, at least for the time being.
