tutorials?
I decided to make maps, because it sounds like fun. I followed the stickied thread, and downloaded Valve Hammer. I opened it up and....was stunned, to say the least. The help there was very sparse, and even more confusing. I managed to make a block...and make it hollow, but that was about it.
Now, can anyone link me to general ( and then ns specific) tutorials for hammer? Keep in mind that I dont knw anything, so it should start from making blocks to everything else.

Here is a decent site that I found by searching: http://liquidfusion.fateback.com/fusion/tuts/wc.html
http://www.valve-erc.com is also an essential bookmark. They have a sister site called: http://collective.valve-erc.com/
I have been using Worldcraft on and off since Half-Life was released and it has a very low learning curve so you will pick it up within a few hours of using it. The most important thing you can learn when making maps is to do everything manually. In other words don't 'carve' or 'hollow' to construct your environment, instead build it all block by block. That way you will not create any unnecessary polygons which is the bane of the Half-Life engine. Low poly count is key and you will hear the term r_speeds quite a lot. Anyway that's all for now.
