One Mistake Can Ruin It

Marines need perfection
I play NS at least 25 hours a week (probably more), and in my many times of playing I notice that the aliens only win when the marines lose. By this I mean that the marines have to make a mistake in order for the aliens to have a chance. This explains why on pub servers that dont have good commanders or teamwork, the aliens win more. For instance, if marines lock 1 hive down completely, and another one is about to be locked down, but the rambos run off. The aliens take over this hive, and since the comm spent res on locking hives and not upgrading, the marine can't stop the fade power. Of course the comm gets blamed. This a common example of a one mistake loss.

I'm writing this just because I wanna see your guys' stories about how you could have won the match, but one mistake (comm's fault, one marines fault , or whole teams fault ) made you lose.

The story says the marines try to stop the aliens from infesting, but in the game the aliens have to stop the marines from taking over. Just tell me your stories. Thanks

After alot of back and forth, marines had secured Cargo Bay before the aliens had secured Viaduct. Comm says "ok guys just hold cargo for a few minutes so I can save enough res to outfit you all". To my surprise, everyone does this. Eight guys with HA/HMG or GL. As a group, we move to Viaduct. We get to the left side (side closest to Cargo). Comm drops a phase and a TF and says "hold this spot, fades are coming. Build the phase and the TF and hold back the fades". What happens? 5 out of the 8 marines run into Viaduct. Bye bye 5 HA's 4 HMG's and our GL. next the 4 fades, gorge and lerk turn the corner to finish off the remaining 3 marines, TF, PG and about 5 minutes later Cargo. GG "big gun syndrome".

I know you said one mistake, but this is a story about 4 instances of a single mistake that almost costed us the game, and each time were were able to recover... temporarily.

The map was tanith. My clanmate was commanding on a 8v8 pub server, and was relying on me to do most of the work simply because the rest weren't reliable. I joined after about 5 minutes. We had motion tracking, and spawn was about to be attacked by 4 skulks. Calling for help on vcomm, I shot at the first coming through the door, kill him and the next, and badly wounded the third before they overwhelmed me. I got no help from the rest of the team were were at or near Waste handling, trying to secure it. The person assigned to defend base was out in reactor room calling for RTs while we lost our observatory. Luckily, the commander jumped out while they were not near the CC and shot the 2 remaining skulks just as the observatory died. While I was rebuilding that, all the marines at waste (5) died from 2 skulks. Sighing with greif, I started out for waste with a single other marine. 2 minutes and 3 skulk kills later, we had a PG at spawn and at waste, with the RT being built. The marines continued to fly through the phase gate while we got a TF and turrets up.

Waste being secure, I set out for Sat Comm with the same marine. The commander pinged the hive and saw it begin construction as we set out, and urged us to hurry. He told the rest of the marines to stay at waste and defend it, eccept for 1 who should stay at spawn. When I left, these orders were being followed. I arrived at waste to see the gorge building 2 OCs at the entrance. Easily killing him, and the unbuilt chambers, I asked for a PG and quickly built it. Two marines slipped through just in time to kill the 5 attacking skulks. At that point, they went back through the phase while I built the TF and turrets with a single other marine.

It was when we finished this that I attempted to go check on waste. It was gone. PG, RT, TF, and 8 turrets all gone. No marines had died - which implied that the 4 defending it were not there to begin with.

I returned to spawn, and spammed on voice comm for ALL marines to go to sat comm, while I went (still with my friend) back to waste. Luckily, there was only a gorge with a few DCs there, and he was quickly killed. We got a PG back up, and a TF with some turrets. Skulk resistance was minimal. I wondered why... Went to check on sat comm... GONE?!?! WHAT?!?! Stupid marines ignored all orders and wandered around the map killing skulks and ruining my game.

Again I headed back to sat comm, VERY frustrated. I announced on voice comm that if we lose waste again, I was going to be REALLY ****.

We did.

Eventually, we just bunked up in sat comm my clanmate commander and I both realizing we were unable to hold more than 1 position. We moved spawn, teched up the remainder of the way, got some JPs and HMGs and attempted to kill a hive. Both waste and fusion were far too well defended and webbed for the JP/HMGs to do any permanent damage. The aliens had all the resource towers, and had seemingly filled the entire map with offense chambers. Even the vents were lined with chambers.

We lasted about 45 minutes in sat comm, as the aliens simply could not organize an attack that wouldn't get shot down by the GLs and JP/HMG marines we had (that couldn't get out of spawn :/). Before the end I had killed about 50 fades, and (checking the 'status' in the console) had accumulated 148 kills, just aboue equal with the aliens' best). The next marine down had 35.

In summary: Throughout the game we lost spawn, and a total of 4 hive locations (waste sat waste sat): more hives than the aliens even built.

I didn't sleep well that night.

Thinking back, this doesn't even fit into this thread all that well. But I really wanted to share this story .

It's this 'big gun syndrome' thats the real killer. I think its a mixture of two effects, firstly the marine feels invincible, secondly the fact that they have this equipment says to them 'we've won' when often they are just tools that allow you to possibly win. It means that marines go rambo at the exact time they need to behave.

One example: ns_nothing
They had via we got cargo asap. Capped the res they made a few unconvincing attacks on it but thats about it. Now the part of the game that is the most important, securing 2nd hive. Some1 got outside the new hive, silo, I dropped PG, they went thru, dropped TF, turrets and seige. Seige was 1 cm out of reach at max strech. Had to make ANOTHER TF! got a seige, took down hive, not before they got 2 fades, but they had upgrades to killed them. Now youre thinking 2 hives 5 rp's games won for sure.

I say just get near via and well take it down. I save res for time being. They get near PG down, TF down, turrets down I also spam HMG/HA/Welders/GL's. Were talking FULLY upgrades marines vs 1 hive aliens. Somehow they let the outpost die! but there's still 2 HA's left so I drop it all again. They get it and keep it. Once again the seige is 1cm out of reach so I get them to try to make another, whilst this happens Silo goes DOWN! Noonw is welding thier HA so they are dieing like flies and 2 rp's get taken at Cargo. Somehow they get a TF up at via (the third one i dropped, and yes they still have HA/HMG and meds if they need). I seige it down. Not wanting to lose this I make a TF under the walkway and PG.

Then we need to retake silo. I said 'SERIOUSLY GUYS YOU DONT WELD HA THIS TIME AND ILL RECYCLE THE IP's'. They say OK. I send the WHOLE team to silo set up a PG/TF outside, fully equipped still they cant kill the hive, they just shoot aliens till they get eaten. I have enough, drop HA/HMG get out of CC and phase to silo 1 HMG clip goes into hive, half way thru second AND server crashes...

The 'big gun syndrome' made it so Marines that should be invincible were dieing like they had nothing.

An error I saw happening a lot is that you order to build an outpost with a TF, a PG, sentries and 2 RT.
The marines go and build it, and...they leave the godforsaken place forever. 5 min later, no outpost.
Don't those marines know what patrolling means? You say: "You and you, patrol the outposts using the PG." Will they do it?? Nope, those guys are deaf, totally ignore you. No big wonder you lose: the most marines are just imagining they are playing a deathmatch game.

Omg Torak I was in the exact same situation except things went much differently. It just goes to show how right you are that one little mistake by the marines can cost you everything.

We had cargo too. The aliens had power silo, viaduct, AND our base . It was 7 marines to 8 aliens. The commander gave us hmgs, gls, welders, and ha. We leave Cargo (which is covered with turrets i.e. kinda safe for the time being) and we make a small outpost at generator. Then we head to the left side of Viaduct (the side nearest Cargo)

The aliens spot us immeadiately and begin pelting us with acid rockets. Most of us are welding and the field commander says, "Let's work our way down TOGETHER, and kill that hive!" Then the Commander says "Wait! Build this TF and STAY THERE!" So we get the the TF up but the aliens since the lull and close on us.

We stick together in a tight group and I swear I had two fades swiping me in the corner but I survived and we killed three of them in the exchange. The rest backed off and we got the siege up and blasted viaduct.

We only stayed there long enough to build a resource tower, phase gate, and armory. Then we headed for power silo. As is the usual case with aliens, the farthest hive from the humans usually isn't as well defended so we were able to get very close to their hive before we encountered resistance. We stayed grouped just outside power silo. The hmgs laid cover fire and shot any aliens that came close. The grenadiers cleared the room of stuctures. Once all the structures were gone we concentrated fire on the hive with two guys welding and we won.

It's more an issue of runaway momentum. If you screw up a couple times in a row on either team, catching up is almost impossible. When the other team makes those mistakes, you have control over the map, which means control over the res, which means control over the map...
• relsanrelsan Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 3720Members, Constellation
Sometimes but not all the time. A lot of times there comes a point in the game were theres a vital point on the map that the aliens and marines both get to at the same time, and whoever gets it wins. One little mistake there could cost you the whole game, but if you do everything perfect, all previous mistakes are erased.

I can really understand the 'big gun syndrome'. It seems to me that teamwork takes a nosedive once the first HMG hits the floor.

The worst part is when you have completely competant team holding positions and not screwing up. The second you give out ANY equipment, be it a shotgun, a jetpack or an HMG, ALL marines assume that they can be the biggest help.
The second I drop equipment, I can have 5 guys just chilling waiting for more. To eradicate big gun syndrome, simply tell them that they aren't getting squat if they wait around for it. More often than not, they'll go back to what they were doing.

Big guns make marines think, "Yay, we win now!." Then they turn off their brains because they think it's in the bag.

Find some better servers to play on.
The one I play on is almost all regulars and clan members.

Teamwork is so strong that marines usually win more often than aliens.

In fact, we try the the craziest strategies.
Take hera, for example.

Marines are good enough and have strong enough teamwork that we can relocate to hera processing no matter which hive the aliens have.

Despite the fact that skulks bombard us from left and right, especially if their start hive is vent or data, marines survive, build a cc, an ip (there's already one at base), armory, and then start mining.

In 10 minutes, the aliens lose.

To counteract big gun sydrome, i simply play welder man when I'm a heavy.
I just weld the rest of the guys, and they stay alive. There's no need to pull out my hmg when the 3 heavies in front of me can all shoot and kill him. In fact, with one heavy welding and the welder guy occasionally switching off, a mass of heavies will decimate everything in front of them, even umbraed fades if there is a gl in the group.

Three hmg's firing on a lerk will kill it pretty quickly. After that, it's fade bye bye, then hive byebye.

Shout at your marines a lot, and then they might get the trick.

Hehehehe, yep, I've experinced that. I had a great experince on Nancy, the opposite of the above quote - me and another marine get into the noname hive with HMGs right as we lose Subspace, but, we still have Port Engine. I tell him over vcom to not attack the res tower, he doesnt, and 30 seconds later we get a PG up and as the marines phase in, we get a TF up. The hive went down soon after, and we locked up the game and toyed with the skulks while our comm. finished teching us.

That was a good experince.

The bad experince I had on Nothing the other day goes almost exactly as above (I think twice now): we have all the upgrades and weapons we need, and yet we keep losing hives because no one will patrol. I was comm. half the time and being a builder marine the other half... and we lost PowerSilo once and Via twice to incompetent HMG/HA marines that would not respond to the comm.'s request to get to a hive/outpost under attack.

I'm standing there, building a res nozzle near the marine start, and I hear 'get to silo get to silo!' and a minute later hear 'there goes the PG, good job guys'.

Man it was the suck. Lerks and skulks vs. HMG and HA and GL and JP... I mean, what the hell? There are no better weapons, if you cant beat level 1 aliens with level 5 and 6 gear, then you might want to go try your hand at Tetris or something...

S

Editing to add: disclaimer - it was on a pub server, but this server generally has very good players and regulars, I've seen a lot of clans spend time here. I guess last night it was just marine n00b/rambo night.

i find generally one of the biggest problems when i comm is the " hahaah RTs LIKE knives syndrome", i send a few people to a waypoint (usually 2-3) or just 1 when i wanna sneak and as soon as they see an RT (especially in hives) they all go knifing it and i say to them " dont attack the fecking RT".

they all fail to realize if they attack soemthing aliens WILL come and munch you unless they're idiots.

worst scenario:

send 1 marine to secure a hive while the rest are getting RTs/defending base or keeping aliens busy, all i want him to do is make a PG and soem turrets but Nooooo he just HAS to bring attention to him self by attacking that RT

Heh .... just the other day (eh... night) I had the opposite experience. Managed to sneak into an undefended hive, found myself a nice position to for a PG. Typed a request for a PG, asked over voice com for a PG. Nothing. Well, finally I got a response from the commander : a waypoint back out into holoroom.

Right. Got there just in time to watch the fades killing the marines franatically trying to build the turrets the commander had spammed there.
