Hunters Dust - Fit For Hl Engine?
<div class="IPBDescription">Choose the engine for hd here!</div> Well currently I am considering the following engines for the Hunters Dust Modification:
Half-Life
Quake2
Quake 3
Serious Sam 1
Unreal Tournament
Unreal Tournament 2003
Website Url With Most Information is: <a href='http://www.geocities.com/rdethridge/hd/index.html' target='_blank'>http://www.geocities.com/rdethridge/hd/index.html</a>
Please vote to the poll. All polls on forums will be counted up and the decision of me (The mod editor) will be decided. If coders from communities could volunteer for the project then development could get under way very soon!
Thanks and bye.
(I've Just Realised This message board doesn't support polls. Please all reply with your comments to the mod idea and please vote on which engine you would like to see the modification on - Thanks again)
(Seems to be forum error stopping me from using the POLL feature)

I knew someone would say that. Its actually a different idea of Dungeon Keeper (I.E. Where I got the Human Heart Structure Idea and the non human opposing team) thats just in FPS with a few twists that me and a mate thought up in class. So Fam - I don't mean to sound like a jerk just your way off with that theory.
If you want outdoor areas, HL and Q2 won't do. They just can't do outdoors. Q3 can do some okay ones, but UT2003 and Serious Sam SE take the for outdoorsy stuff.
The edge of the map you can see right there ends in nothingness. There's just this magic hill you can't go over. And since its so open, the way the HL engine is, it'll draw the whole map all the time. The Serious Sam SE and UT2003 engines have a LOD system for outdoor scenes, but HL does not. And look how completely undetailed that map is. There's a few sprite trees, some trucks, and a small building. that's it.
Not to mention the troubles w/ the HL engine drawing every player (which is far more costly to the renderer) all the time since VIS sees em all the time..
If you want that sorta thing done, SS:SE or UT2003 is the way to go. HL is simply not made for outdoor environments, and nothing is gonna change that...
«EDIT»
Go for quake 3, UT2k3 and SS2 can pull of some nice outdoor scenes, but quake 3 has more players (i think)
teh serious sam engine would be wonderfull for outdoor stuff like that which is pictured. especially serious sam 2.
teh problem is finding mappers who's heads dont spin when they try and map for teh engine. in a old style game like hl the mapper creates only the objects in teh world (ie walls ceilings etc) in serious sam teh opposite is true teh world starts out solid and you put air into it, it blows my mind.
the advantage of serious sam is teh huge size you can have in a level, especially that can be seen, and still have no problemwith lag or fps. (admitedly i have only played on a lan and have had no problems with lag even running a 4 way split screen, antoher cool feature, on 4 different machines. i am also unaware of any limit on teh number of players on a serious sam or serious sam 2 server though i may be wrong.
i was able to keep over 40 fps on a p3 100 with ati radeon 8500 card running as teh server with a four way split screen, as well as 2 other systems running four x split screens. (its great you get four guys who spawn in a line and teh controlls are teh same you go running along and well im getting off topic)
any way check it out. it will be my next project after finals:)

im gonna try and find yall teh best level ever from SS2
ie you run to a curved wall and suddenly you are perpendicular to teh floor like the skulk except the model rotates you dont fall off etc there is a room in serious sam where you can run aound in side a cylender and stick to any side you run on!!!:)
and i found a screen shot that does teh ss2 engine justice
( you can cut the trees down and climb the moutnais ( actually teh space ship too)

ok im done
if i could map for this game...<!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

mmmm, solar flare...
Back on topic, I'd say SS:SE or UT2k3.
i blame auto correct in ms word as a kid:)
/me remembers WordPerfect & Works and shudders. I'm nostalgic about a lot of things, but Office suites are something that definately without a doubt have come leaps and bounds and are much much better heh.
And I have absolutely no idea what this has to do with anything!

Pansy, back in my day we used DOS 3.0's standard editor: EDLIN
AND WE LIKED IT THAT WAY! Well... ok.. no.. we hated it with a pasion but thats beside the point....
On topic:
I'm a little surprised you haven't considered something like Crystal Space or Cube... Then again with all the engines on your list most of the code is already done...
My vote is for Q2, Carmack's Code = teh win.

DIE!
(Or leave, take about 8 years of English class, then get back to me)
UT2K3 - Pretty pretty! Almost no playerbase, despite how well it sold. Performs like frozen cr*p on anything less than an Ath 1800+ with a Radeon 9500-class card.
SE(/SE2?) - Moderately pretty, highly extensible. Undisputed high-enemy-count king. Moderate, but rabid playerbase.
HL - Oogah-lay. MUCH work needed to be done. Severe limitations for a next-gen mod. HUGE FREAKING PLAYERBASE.
Middle-of-the-road seems to be the way to go. Besideswhich, it's fun to have 'bouncy gravity rooms' where you just fall back and forth forever between opposing gravity fields until you *tap* a wall and explode. ^_^
