When you decrease does it lower the "Choke" or the Loss" and when you lower it, how far is it recommended to be lowered.

try raising/lowering rate in 500 steps and the cl_things in steps of 5 or 3

To decrease your rate load up ns and goto the console. Type Rate X.
Replace X with a good setting, here are the good settings list:

7500-10000 = T1-Lan or a good DSL, Cable Connection
5000-7500 = Regular DSL, Cable Connection
2500-5000 = Not too great cable/dsl, ISDN, or awesome modems.
0000-2500 = Use this if you are on a modem or you are still having problems with other settings.

So if you are on cable I recommend: rate 5000

Also, choke in the netgraph is sent to you from a Router over the internet. Choke, or a choke packet means that there is a high level of congestion on the network that you are on. There is not much you can do about this it just means that either someone is using all your bandwidth, your ISP sucks, or they are doing hardcore network maitnence. Decreasing your rate will not always fix choke packets.

ya but its only in Natural selection... counter strike and team fortress dont do that..

I use 56k. here are the settings I use to minimize loss and choke

cl_updaterate 25
cl_cmdrate 20-25

rate 4800

cl_allow_download 0
cl_download_ingame 0
cl_allow_upload 0

chances are your comp might be too slow and choking up. It could also be a server problem, because NS eats up processing power like crazy. Find another server that has 18 players or less and good ping.

Whenever I get on to Voogru my choke goes way up and I have a ping of like 2000. I tried changing all this stuff but it didn't help. Should I just give up on some of the greatest servers in existence?
