Hmm. Innocent questions followed by fanboy flaming followed by moderator kissasses.

Trust me, just try the game, it's great and you'll like it. If you liked SC (and had any skill at it), try comming. You'll probably like it, too.

These guys are all lying. The truth is none of us have heard of Starcraft, this is because Monse and Flayra went to this hospital on July 25th of every year since 1975. Once there, they extracted the DNA from the newly born babies and cloned us where he then grew the newly formed clones into teenagers of varying ages... there were some accidents and thats why there arent that many of us... but anyway, we were all programmed to unquestionably worship NS and to eliminate all who disagree with us.

Thus why there are so many nuked posts on the first page of this thread.

I hope i've managed to enlighten you.

(The moral of the story is, so what if it's similar to Starcraft, it's an enjoyable game and should be looked at, played and experienced with a clear mind. No need to be biased or unfair because it's <b>just a game</b> and doesn't really matter on the whole universal scale of things.)

When we're talking about old games, does anyone besides me remember the very VERY old game by LucasArts called Loom? It was released in 1987 and was like THE rpg game, it was a third person role-playing game: Monkey Island style, I've got the game for PC in DOS format, if you want it I can send it to you, it's really one of the best games ever, I remember playing it when I was little <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Unfortuantly you can't know if your going to like NS or not without actually playing it, and its likely you will be heavily flamed while learning how to play (you shoulda got a taste of that from the first page here). If you decide to try it I recommend ns1.joe.to and ns2.joe.to. And if a guy named kenny gives you any **** just ignore him, he apparently complains about everything.

    Rules of thumb though:
    1. Ask before you try commanding and make it very clear that you are new.
    2. Follow orders.
    3. As an alien, ask before going Gorge and make it clear that you are new.
    4. Listen to other players (when its not just flaming). Nothin' people hate more than a new player who doesn't actually try to learn anything.

EDIT: OBTW, those servers are only up between certain times.... i'll edit again if i remember which times...

Oh my gawd! So many nuked posts. This thread is buzzing with radiation. Anywho, reading the Natural Selection manual will explain the game to you a lot better than screenshots. The best way to explan it is: "Starcraft, but each unit has their own intelligence level, skill level, and accuracy." Just read the manual, then play the game, then become hopelessly addicted.

Wow...Lots, heck, TOO MANY nukes. I thought we were more "newcommer" friendly than this. But ah well, here comes my 2 and a half cents. NS, to put simply, is a hybrid. FPS/RTS. Sure it uses some aspects of SC, and alot of other things hanging around, like the Alien movies. But, at the same time, it is revolutionary and groundbreaking. FPS/RTS on HL engine? If you even suggested the idea back in '98 when the game was released, people would have laughed right in your face.

I'll keep it short n sweet I guess... NS is DEFINATELY worth the download. If you got a 14k modem, leave your comp on for a few days and be patient. IT IS that GOOD!

    P.S....If anyone has a 14k modem....I pray for you.

I can't say I've played StarCraft, but it seemed to me like just another generic RTS with aliens in it.

You owe it to yourself to go pick it up. Its only 10$ for the game and its expansion. Its also one of the top ten played online games so you know its doing something right.

First off, the sentiment among most people here is that words alone cannot describe NS. You really do have to just try it.

That said, i'll see if I can kinda give an overview.

If you've played through the SC campaign, you went through a couple of indoor missions as marines, right? So you've got marines vs aliens in cramped quarters in a space station. Now imagine that YOU are one of the zerglings/hydralisks/marines/etc. On the marine team, you have one player as a commander that plays like you played SC, from a top down view, building things, ordering marines around. Except in NS, the marines are all real people. On the alien side, there is a 'hive mind' that alerts and notifies the aliens of certain things, but there is no commander with a top down view.

Winning consists of killing off the entire other team, and destroying their means of respawning. Each full game lasts roughly an hour, and will consist of an early game (limited weapons, focus on gaining resources and fortifying territory), mid game (the big guns start coming out, nastier aliens become available, focus is on both defense of your controlled areas, and attacks on your enemies holdings), and late game (once one side has gained a strong advantage over the other the focus for the winning side is ensuring their victory, and for the losing side is to attempt a comeback to midgame stage).

NS is extremely hectic, and has an incredibly steep learning curve. You will most certainly be completely overwhelmed and lost on your first few games. Try to follow other people on your team, and if someone tells you to do something, DO IT. In NS both sides walk a very fine line between success and failure at all times, and it requires total teamwork to achieve victory. That is both the beauty and downfall of NS, it requires everyone to work together to achieve the goals for the team.

Most importantly, dont get upset if you die over and over and over again. We were all new at one time, and with practice and an open mind (that this is a game like no other) you will find NS to be one of the most intense and gratifying game experiences ever.

Absolutely. So far, TFC has more strategic complexity to it on an individual player level than NS does. What's nice about NS is that, unlike TFC, there's way more emphasis on strategy on a TEAM level.

In other words, an individual player can go from a green recruit, to average, to an absolute master of their craft and have a hundred intricacies to learn in order to be effective at their class, yet the teamwork is minimal. There are also nine different paths to master, most totally different from any other.

NS, on the other hand, only really has four major paths - Gorge, Commander, Marine, Alien. However, it's also got tons and tons of actual strategy and teamwork, which TFC lacks.

rule of the thumb is to never EVER compare something to something else, eg. saying a mod is a cs clone, etc.

Uh... <scratches head>. if I am prohibited to compare a game with some other game... doesn't that kind of destroy the whole foundation of comparison? Compare all you want, just make sure to compare the stuff that IS comparable, and acknowledge the differences without falling to stupid things like "Natural Selection don't have Zealots - therefore it sucks much more than starcraft".

There's at best a thematic similiarity between Starcraft and Natural Selection. They are two very different breeds when you play them.
