Now, it's not like SC. The only resemblance are marines and aliens (zerg, some of the creatures ie skulk = zergling and onos = ultralisk). The strategies are very different, but there are certainly strategies. You may get frustrated the first time out, but don't quit until you've commed a game! That's the real beauty of this mod. Winning your first commed game, that's the rub. BTW: Commander is the person who gives marines orders. Aliens have no commander.
And it's the most innovative game I've played in years. I got more addicted to this than Warcraft 3, that's for sure.
Typically, a marine that does not follow orders will not recieve a better weapon or healing from the Commander. Marines that do not follow orders are often refered to as "Rambos". Rambos will lose the game for marines.
NS is kinda of mix of 'Gloom' and 'Starcraft'. It's extremely addicting, and the style and polish is quite impressive for a HL mod.
It's very much based around teamwork. One really good player will not win the game for you. There is stratedy in coordinating strikes on key locations, and communication is a must. A headset is all but required to excel, not only for the easy team communication, but the increased hearing from the headphones.

I think "basically" is the wrong word to use. Try "amazingly", or "difficultly", if you are less of a fanboy <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
But anyway, yes, there are some elements from Starcraft in it... but its not like it is actually Starcraft, even if you play as a commander. If you are not playing as commander it definately isn't like Starcraft.
Think of a first person shooter with enough strategic scope that not only might you need to die for your team, you must also know when to kill. Attacking an enemy can do your team more harm than good. I don't think any other game has reached that level of strategic complexity.
There's much more on the site, probably put better than that. Of course, you could just try playing it.

Natural Selection (hereafter referred to as NS) has some elements of StarCaft and other classic RTS's, but by no means is it a direct rip-off.
the Marines, heck, every space based combat thing has Marines, it's just that NS has decided to make those marines worthwhile.
The Aliens are similar to those of StarCraft, but that should be seen as flattery a little, that a game such as StarCraft reaches out and touches the imagination of mod makers letting them create content that are based on but not rip-off's of content.
try a few games, and it's always worth a download.

Anyone that doesn't follow orders should be shot in the knees at close range with a high calibur rifel while the commander jams white-hot nails in the said marine's eyes.

Imagine you are playing as one of the marines in the Starcraft cut scenes and have a Starcraft player watching over you from above, and that will give you a pretty good idea.

NS is very different depending one what side you choose... one of the features of the game is you get to pick the side that best fits your play style.
As an alien, the game is sorta like coordinated team deathmatch with strategic objectives. Teamwork is rewarded, but a lone wolf can also do an incredible amount of damage. When crisises occur the team has to rally together to succeed, but the rest of the time the aliens can pursue their own goals. Life as an alien is all about sneak attacks and ambushes, especially early in the game. The game feels a lot like AvP, but with a much stronger sense of teamwork.
As a marine, the game feels much more like SC from the grunt's point of view. The marines are as mobile as the Terrans are in SC; they can't move very fast, but they can quickly set up bases anywhere. The marines tend to have one or two objectives they pursue at a time, whereas the aliens may have as many objectives as there are players.
Both sides are rewarding, although very different. I suggest everyone try marine first. In a lot of ways it is a more typical FPS as a marine, but playing with a comm watching over you like a semi-benevolent god really gives you a feel for the game.

Goodness. I've never seen such rampant locking, heh heh.
But this is an NS forum, everyone's gonna recommend it. Nothing really happens to players that don't follow orders. In fact the commander is usually so busy giving out orders it's tough to see who is actually following them. If you do play it, try and follow orders, but don't beg for orders because sometimes there's just nothing that needs to be done.
It is like starcraft in the sense that you have nondescript human Marines fighting aliens, and the aliens have your basic attacks like bite, spit, heal, etc. Both are forms of RTSes. There are very little similarities past that. The games play TOTALLY different

play a little bit, then come and post...kinda makes sense eh?
