Amd And Redhat

Problems....LOTS
I am experiencing lots of problems with running a redhat machine, with an amd processor, I was wondering how many admins, are experiencing the same types of problems. It ran great for like I am running redhat 8, but I have experienced the same types of problems on 7.2. It starts crashing and freezing the machine into a pure deadlock. SO I am for the moment switching to slack, but I wanted to see if the prob is not only with a prob of the OS, but maybe how the OS and the hardware interact. But I am running a AMD 2100+ server.

Specs:
2100+ AMD
Soyo Dragon KT 400 Black
2100DDR 256 megs of ram
Matrox Video Card
RedHat 8.0

If you have any suggestions drop me an email at virgil@flatline-server.com

what expansion cards you have in?

was it kernel panics or just loss of response?

I've had 2 experiences of a total crash as you describe, we're using Red Hat 8.

I only have a matrox Video card, and it was working fine for the last 2 weeks no crashes no nothing, with out a problem. And now all of a sudden with in like 5 mins as soon as we got it started and started hlds it crashed. It was total loss of response, even got it while sshed into it, even when using it as a local machine it stopped responding.

what other services are you running?

how are you running HLDS? is it inside a screen? Do you have alot of MM plugins?

I have a ton on MM plugins including AMX. It takes like 3 minutes for it to load (i have noo idea why though). then the usual time for the map and cvars....

but my SSH still is working. I run a amdxp 2000+ on a ECS mobo.

what kernel are you running? i had problems with release 24.8.0...so i rolled back to 18.8.0

I am running hlds inside of a screen, and the only thing I am running is hlds and meta/clanmod nothing else. I am running the default kernel for the athlon for redhat 8, it is 2.4.24-18. I mean it is just going to be easier and more stable to run slackware, I have run it before, and Redhat is starting to mess with things more and more, so I think that is why ns is having prob with redhat now.

i agree, but everything is running very smooth for my server atm and i've customized it too much to switch distro's atm.

    good luck

You could try loading the server to see if it's overheating/whatever. Cpuburn is good for this (Don't blame me if it toasts your hardware....)

If the whole machine is freezing solid, check:

    temperature
memory (swap in some other sticks. Bad memory is fairly common)
power supply (low/high voltage on a line can freak out a mobo. Swap a new one in and test)

This computer was my old machine, it worked like a champ in windows no problem, and like I said for like a 2 weeks straight without a reboot in linux as a server, it work fine, memory good, power good (420 watts), tempeture, in a well cooled case.

If you're seeing random, hard freezes, it's almost surely hardware. Check that CPU temperature; maybe the heatsink has come loose. Memory goes bad out of the blue; try some other sticks.
