Sure it looks fun... but is it -scary-?

(probably for those thats played it)
Seeing how this is pretty much a "sci-fi horror movie-ish"
I suppose it's only fair to ask those that have actualy been blest enough to play NS so far.

Has there ever been a situation where something just came out of nowhere, had a situation so desperate, came so close to death that you could just not help yourself from yell out loud, or at the very least, got freaked out?

'Cause this seems like a "Natural Direction" for the mod to take, making it able to scare the crapposity out of your opponent atleast once.

So I wanna hear how these mighty playtesters were heard screaming like wee-girls for our amusment! Come on... you know you want to tell us....

Mwhahaha?

Actually, that isn't the point. If you do a little reading here, you'll see how the game is not supposed to be "horror movieish". That does a better job of explaining it than me, so... yeah.

Heheheeh. I think Ken hasn't had a full experience. You drop your guard, and there are so many places a level 1 can pop out of. Some of the greatest experiences you'll have will involve a level 1 dropping on your head, or jumping out of a vent and onto your back. I know that being the level 1 in those situations is just as wonderfully amazing, especially when the numbers favor the marines 4 to 1 and you come out on top. I can only imagine what it must have felt like knowing that the people all around you were being killed by an unseen enemy darting in and out of the many vents in the short little hallway.

/me reminisces about the extremely frightening experience he had when he decided it was necessary to clear out the glass pipe of hera, only to have MonsE drop from the ceiling when he thought it was safe.

you'll get startled a lot, i am sure of it

Oh, I wasn't saying it isn't scary/intense! hehehe, no no no...

Just clearing stuff up... yeah... I do that for some reason...

Anyways, the game definitely won't leave you disappointed in the atmospheric/tense/*suprise!* department... it just isn't going to be like pure horror.

Lol, maybe it will be for some though!

Just kind of clearing up what Ken20Banks was getting at, the way I understand it, NS isn't gonna be scary because of pools of blood or half-eaten human bodies lying around the map. On the other hand, it will have quite an immersive, creepy atmosphere, which will only frighten you more when Bob drops from the ceiling to attack you.

hey, first time I played VS I clenched my teeth so hard I had a haw ache for a day and a half. As long as NS isn't that scary/dark I'll be okay. Speaking of, the commander gets better lighting right? So thereotically, the commander can see all(as in hiding spots not what's in them.)

Pi Gi, the commander gets the exact same lighting as everyone else does. Now, a marine may not see an alien hiding in a corner, but if the marine is looking towards him, a little blob will appear on the commander screen, and he can shout out 'Alien above you" or such

As for being scary, it is jumpy-scary, when a ton of sudden stuff happens, but not gore-scary with blood spraying and limbs falling out of vents, hehe.

I've managed my share of fright in-game. I remember scaring the hell out of Flayra once, though he'll probably deny it. Lots of things you can do with wall-climb + cloaking.

Yes - nothing beats hanging of the ceiling in Hera's fog passage, waiting for a lone Marine to come patroling through... Like Ken said, very startling. For the Marine!

Personally, i think some of the most scariest moments are the random thin gs that happen in bast and hera, in this one passage in hera, fog and a loud ambience just shoots out right in front of you, scares me everytime.

    Scary alien sound effects.

    ScreechGurggleRoar!

    What the hell was that!

    Oh... it was me...

I have never been scared to be alone in any map, except for Bast. Purely down to the atmosphere Relic has got into the map and the NS musical score.

While not playing NS, I was shocked playing Ape Escape. I was liking in First Person view into a lake where I knew an ape was hiding. Then out of nowhere, he jumps out into my face with his huge white eyes taking up the screen! I definatly went AHHH! and then capture his butt.

Doesn't bother me one bit hArk.

I'd rather hear great stories like these then none at all.

and its not like you wont ever play it, you will ... just not as soon as the playtesters.

    Pi Gi - What's VS?
Dude, I'm so glad NS isn't gonna be a survival horror type of thing. And I'm also really glad that the gratuitous (sp?) violence is gonna be low. Not for the kids, but for me. I don't enjoy playing games where blood is thrown around for no reason.
Now if only you guys could find some way to put some really excessive and overindulgent nudity in the game. Then you'd have a hit on your hands. : )

And no I'm not talking about Bob in a thong or anything.

    -late reply, but yeah-
Ok I should have probably rephrased what I called a "Sci-fi horror" Basicaly one where there are aliens... on a deserted ship, with a pack of marines that get killed off by the aliens... yada yada. But I will completely agree about the -gore- factor. A truely scary thing wouldn't need to rely on actual gore, the gore is just there to make the situation more sickening/threating/ect... I could see the occasional dead body lying around, but I sorta doubt aliens would realy leave that behind when they could just consume it. So a skull here or there would make sense.

Guess this post was succesful and hearing the screams of the playtesters (sorta). I wonder if someone playing alien has ever been spooked by what a marine did to it...

In response to what is VS.. VS is vampire slayer... a very scary mod indeed when you are walking down a dark hallway and all of a sudden a vampire charges up and screams and slices you to bits... i almost #### myself once ITS AWESOME! As for NS in the mapping tut's they say not to use blood and such a lot because the mod isn't like that, they also say not to make levels to dark... so they are not encouraging scariness. But the shear fact the aliens have to rely on killing in Hand to Hand tells us they must be VERY sneaky, hiding in shadows, vents etc. Its the way the game will be played. The whole excitment will be gettin the #### scared outa you . I can't wait!!!!!!! As for the playtesters... GIVE US MORE STORIES! I need information so I can sleep tonight!

PS. I am going to cry at the end of the X-Files tonight

Not all aliens are based on melee attacks. But since I don't really trust my knowlegde about the different alien classes enough, I leave the weapon details explaining to somebody else.
