Just too easy
While it's been well-known that wall mines can be detonated by firing acid shots through the laser, floor-laid mines have been rather more difficult. However, recently I found the trick.

You have to hit the mine detection box rather than the mine itself. The detection box starts about 20 centimeters from the top of the mine and extends to about 50 cm above it. An acid shot travelling through this area will reliable detonate a mine, even if it's been laid on the floor.

So shoot above the mine, not at it.

This works cuz the gorge's spit and acid rockets are actually solid objects. You can actually stand on a gorge's spit (not for long tho, it's somewhat quick), and any solid object that isn't a marine seems to set off a mine. I think that when you spawn, the little graphic display is solid, and sometimes that set's off a mine place directly on or too close to an IP.

I think gorg should definetly be able to mine sweep.. Right now Mines is obviously the biggest headache for skulks.. I am start seeing a lot more comms just abandon early TF security and go for mine field instead..

Lol ya!

"Commander drop mines!"
Marine gets mines and places them
Marines run through field to leave base.

BOOM BOOM BOOM

Marines die "WHyd we die"
Comm "Oh ya I pushed the 'anti marine mines' button SORRY!"

Aliens die laughing.

Kinda off-topic but mines are oftn used to protect RTs. Here's a good way of getting round them, specifically as a skulk or lerk.

Simply go on the ceiling above the RT and drop down on top of it (or land on it as a lerk), and chomp away. Of course when you destroy it your ineviatably gonna drop and get killed by the mines at the base but, heh, you just destroyed a RT

Unless of course they've placed mines ON the RTs, which i've never seen

Or even simpler, just approach the tower carefully and chomp at maximum range. Unless they have used 10+ mines to mine it, you will be able to chomp it at range.

Mining a respoint will only work against the unwary skulk.

Now, turrets to force you to move and mines to kill you, now THAT's nasty...

But it is very easy to kill that skulk/lerk, who is on top of an RT, because those RT's legs doesn't give any protection and you cant see anything while biting (you have to look down).

Did you know that skulks with celerity or primal scream can run along gorge spit in the air. Its really cool.

So could a gorge spit up into the air and a skulk jump on it and get a boost? lol

he... that would look cool

Ind the start when i began to play... it almost seemd like the mines where coming after me, no matter where i stepped there was a mind(after the game when i where sleeping i would wake up screaming cause of terrible dreams about splattered intestens, destroyd kharaa bodies and explosions... it was terrible ) But i soon learned to walk slow when i was near a base, and if there where mines, i would walk on the celing.

The nightmares became less voilent... But they where still there...
I then soon discovered that i could lure marines close to me, and when close enough, i would run into the mines....

Know when the nightmares come and a mine is triggered... I laugh... I laugh at the sight that comes into my mind.. The sight of the marines faces when they realize that they have gone into a trap... The sight of their bodies getting ripped by the explosion...

You can't put mines directly on certain structures. It will instantly go *poof* and be either completely gone or possibly deep inside the structure, probably the prior. I believe this applies to any structure that has an animation (res, obs, armory, etc) but not the stationary ones (definately ip, prolly arms lab, proto, etc).

A gorge being able to trip mines isn't too big a balance issue, because if the mines are being used off in kharaa territory they aren't gonna be very effective (random kills here and here), and if the marines get killed in their own base by a gorge, it's their own fault

I know for a fact that spit trips mines. I accidentally killed a skulk once by tripping a mine with spit.

I SWEAR! I THOUGHT HE WAS OUTSIDE THE BLAST RADIUS!

Hmmm. Weird. Like I said, it was last night. We had pushed an entire team of marine n00bs (seriously, they were... it was 5 on 4, we had a NS-Bot running circles below our noname hive in ns_nothing (that is so annoying btw), and they never reached noname or mess hall, EVER) all the way back to their base, where they had laid probably 30 or 40 mines.

I had been skulking most of the game, but I went gorge in front of their res nozzle/closing door near the marine base. I dropped four or five D towers for healing as lerks pegged the marines coming out of the base, and then waddled over to the ramp up into their base to drop webs (the 2nd hive was just coming up). I remembered reading here that gorges could set off mines, so I spit... and spit... and spit... and spit. Nothing.

One of the really good alien players yelled over voice to hit the mines with Web. I did, they go boom.

I must have been hitting the mentioned detection boxes being off problem. My bad guys.

It seems to be more of an art than a science. Just spit towards the mines, or over them, or through the beam (if they have one), one of those usually works. Or do it the easy way, get three hives and just bilebomb the center of all the mines (Got about five kills from mines in the span of twenty seconds by doing that...)

OU~CH!
Man! That reminds me of a particular game on Eclipse, where I told the comm to drop mines and mine everything . The problem was, I was not the only one who picked up mines (HEY! Those are *my* mines!). Someone decided to surround the PG in spawn with mines but forgot to replace the 2 doorsmats.
Then, while the entire team was having a meeting in the spawn about countering 2-hive fades, the subject of our conversation dropped by and threw a water balloon (or what we thought was the Kharaa equivalent of) at us...

Mines, while effective early on game for a great defence FOR fades, if the marines base entrance is mined off, dont go in, acid rocket from outside, when marines rush you, them mines leave a nice big mess

mine sweeping is cool, but the mine's detonation range is too far

most of the time i gorge spit the mines, they blow up, and the range is so far, i keep getting myself killed or injured.

it's annoying, so shoot LONG RANGe medium range might still get you injured.
• Phifth_ElementPhifth_Element Join Date: 2002-11-11 Member: 8233Members
Speaking of long range, never under estimate your gorge spit at long distances! I killed a guy shootng fro one end of refinery to the other. I could watch my spit sail through the air! He was JP and thought that he was in control. Then *splat*....
