My Sob Story

a tale of NS and harddrive failure
so im playing NS 2 days ago... just joined a server, the marine base had just been annihilated, but they had built up a backup comm chair and an IP in port engine... everyone spawns, but no one will comm... so i say what the hell, i know how to comm to some extent, ill give it a try. I put up an armory... more IPs, expand a couple resource nodes.. get an arms lab, then start getting yelled at for not sieging a hive. im about to put down a TF once i get the resources, when it says "vote to eject commander started"

at this point, my halflife freezes. not quite a hard lockup, not yet anyways. i try to ctrl alt del and it does nothing, i alt tab and try to close it... still nothing. then comes the hard lockup. i thought this was weird, cause i havent had a hard lockup ever since ive gotten windows xp... then out of nowhere A BLUE SCREEN. this was no ordinary blue screen though, it basically told me that it had to shut down to prevent physical damage to my hardware. upon rebooting all i see is... primary boot failure. yeah, so i thought my harddrive had completely failed, i did managed to recover all my stuff and get back in action though, so its not such a terrible ending. the point of this story, however, is just to say....

screw you guys who tried to vote me out as commander, effectively freezing my halflife, and costing me 2 days of productivity and a nearly missed programming assignment! JERKS! that is all.

<quietly sneaks up and drags bob off for a detailed vivisection so he can determine exactly what makes him think being voted out of Comm would freeze HL, and not simply a random hardware glitch>
Have you been able to reproduce this, by getting kicked out again and seeing if it dies? If so, it might be something to look into. if not, it's more likely twitchy hardware.

OMG!!! The same thing happened to me....

I can't remember exactly what happened, because it was a few weeks ago now, but I know I was playing a LAN game with RCBOT's when it froze and I had to cut the power to my computer.. And when I restarted, just before it would normally load windows the blue screen would come up saying something like "Windows will not start to prevent damage to hardware" and it did this everytime I rebooted, so I was forced to format and re-install windows... Luckily my HD is partitioned so I didnt lose much...

its a 6 month old hard drive... ive tested it and didnt find any errors. im really not sure what the problem could be. i think its possible halflife couldve cause some kind of windows error that couldve corrupted some data required to boot my system. weirder things have happened.

I had just put in a 2nd LAN card in my computer the day before it happened, so I thought that was the problem... Like Windows didn't install it properly or something, so it fl0xz0red the computer up, but since it happened to you, I think we might have a serious bug here...

    That's 2 of 400,000.. single-instance. Anyone else?

Once again: If you can reliably reproduce the bug, it's a likely candidate for the Bug reports forum.. not General Discussion.

Probably not a HL bug, but an XP bug. I've noticed some people having hard crashes in XP (earlier versions, mostly) and a reboot produces a STOP error, or something similar that prevents booting. It turned out to be a stupid bug in XP, not an actual hardware failure (though those DO happen sometimes).

well i scanned my harddrive with drive health, and it told me i had a problem with my harddrive spinup... and a S.M.A.R.T. failure. not to worry though, i got a new one today since it was under a 1 year warranty.

That would suk to lose all your data. I recently did because I was installing linux and windows' bootloader didn't like linux, so I installed Grub (a linux bootloader) next thing that I know... My computer won't boot period, off of anything. Of course, I have no idea how to program Grub from a CLI so it was time to reformat!!! AHHHH I STRONGLY DISKLIKE GRUB!
