<div class="IPBDescription">I must be the only one w/ it</div>Sometimes when I boot/reboot my computer up it will freeze at the login screen (I have Win98)  When this happens a green line appears at the top and I must reboot and hope it does not happen again.  Any ideas why?

no idea, but my windows refuses to boot soemtimes, the reset button won't work or the power button, i really have to switch the powersupply off on the back of the case, the nwhen i reboot i'm in 16 colours and it says I have a prob with the videosettings and my hardware, if i want to change it I have to reboot for the changes to take effect, and sometimes it hangs during the reboot, it's really annoying. I'm just gonna reconfigure my windows after my exams. Myabe you should too, just reinstall your windows and be sure to remove the old config files, you'll have to reinstall everything tho (soundcard, vidcard etc.)

steve: reinstall windows from the cabs (c:\windows\options\cabs\setup.exe) and see if it gets any better.

    Fector: get a new computer.

oh come *on*, Win98 is not bad at all. I haven't had any problems at all on my computer. The only problems I've seen are with people who come to me for tech support who can't tell the difference between a BSOD and a startup screen.

only do what SmokeMasta says as a last resort, because you will lose everything on your hard drive.

Indeed... and I can't even restart my computer right now... Neither the power or restart buttons work... Have to switch the surge when I need to restart. Obviously not good for the thing.

I had a gateway but that is just the casing, everything else is new.  If I reinstall windows it is just like formating, right?

no, you keep your files, infact you can reinstall and keep your configuration so you don't have to reinstall vid/sound card etc., you can choose to make a new configuration, i sugest you do that

if you want to re-install just windows, DONT reformat!

    First, make a boot disk.

    Start>Settings>ControlPanel>Add/Remove Programs>startup Disk

Now, do a search for a file called deltree.bat

Put that file on the boot disk, and reboot into a DOS prompt. Now, type:

    cd A:\
    deltree.bat C:\Windows

That will un-install windows. Now, take your windows CD and install as normal. You will have to re-config, but you wont lose all your files.

Make sure you have an actual Win98 CD, not a crappy "quick Restore"
