big vs. small
I play on Enya's Egobooster in Finland. 26 players. Gives the aliens a run for their money and it's a breeze to comm.
Played some smaller games but teamwork is brutally hard to coordinate on the marines side.
From my experiences, I've found that 8-10 (or less) and the game is just WAY too easy for the aliens to walk all over the marines. More than 22 on a pub server and everyone is trying to do everything themself. So, I'd have to say that my favorite server size is 14-16.

thats why i hope in 1.1 a majority of the battles will be focused on HMG HA GL vs FADES... fighting for res and the last hive... that'll make NS way better.... but then.. it'll also make it boring if thats the only fights that go on.. blech
20 players total is a good number for me. 16 would probably be the lowest I'd go, unless I were desperate for an NS fix
I LOVE BIG GAMES. If both teams are experienced and play smart, you are in for an EPIC battle. In fact I've had a lot of EPIC battles on big servers with the tide turning several times in a game, and utter mayhem ensuing all over the map at the same time. That's also where elite commanders get their stars.
It's easier to find a good noobless game on smaller servers for obvious reasons, and its also easier to command there. It's also eaiser to be an alien. So basically if I'm looking for a challenge I go to big servers and try to educate my teammates as best I can. If I just wanna play a little, I'll find a smaller server.
8 players each is a good number, you've got the best chances of controlling good players as com and Aliens have just enough players to scour the map. Although the games are usually shorter than in larger games (which tend to have the fun big, battles) I think there's a lot more effort required on the strategy side of things (rather than brute force)
I used to play on smaller servers and ya, aliens won just about everytime and it got kind of annoying. So I moved to a bigger server, played marines and started winning. But I usually play the "underdog" when I play NS, so I switched to aliens. I don't mind getting beaten it makes u try a lot harder and makes the win that much more fulfilling.
I like 10-14 players server most. 16 is good too, but more than 20 is too easy for marines
16 is very nice. As an alien (I go gorge), I usually will have one skulk following me around, or someone nearby defending me.
As a marine (I go comm), I can split my team into TWO sqauds. mmm, two firesquads..
Any more than that, and the resource issues become very obvious. I have to run like a mad gorge to keep up with a relentless marine force, and as a marine I just tech like a mutha.
16 to 18 seems very balanced; once you get any higher the marines start getting ridiculous advantages, having to hold only a fraction of the res points to equip entire teams with hmgs and jps/ha. 16 player games offer no advantage to either side and provide fast furious gameplay, avoid the larger servers is my advice.
18-24 is my range. i've got a wireless DSL connection, so sometimes in bigger games with 30 people i get that annoying red "Connection Failure" message on my HUD when im in a room with a lot of action going on.

If the marine commander wants to, they will almost always win 10v10 games and larger, by going for the JP/HMG rush. Of course, on smaller servers (6v6 or smaller), the ONLY chance the marines have of winning is the HMG/JP rush.
Larger servers allows the marines to use a variety of strategies to win.

14-16, although I usually end up with 2-3
12-14 here. Can tolerate 16, but 18+ it starts to sway out of hand. The epic uber battles can be fun, but I'm not seeing a lot of those, just HMG/JP rushes, mine rushes, and if a bad skulk or gorge rush happens, then the out-spawn-you LMG rush. Its been awhile since I was on a 10 vs 10 or higher and Fades and Heavies were going at it.

well....COMMing a large game is easier because your chances of having people who listen are greater. it could be 10 a side, and if you get 4 rines who listen, you can win.
as for size, i like a nice 8v8. balanced. fair. not too big, not too small.
I usually play 10v10 on our server here in Ireland. On publics I find 6v6 up to 10v10 are my faves as either race.
