<div class="IPBDescription">Damn you XP</div> Just put Windows XP and at this rate i'll be back on 98 SE by
the end of the week.
I'm getting random lock ups and Outlook "generates errors"
every time I try and check my email.
I've only installed a few programs (MSN/ICQHalf-life etc) nothing
dodgy like Kazaa. My mate reckons that the lastest nVIDIA drivers
(which i'm using for my GeForce 4) could be causing the lock-ups.

So if anyone has an advice on which drivers to install I would
be very thankful.

    oh god, I need to know which drivers to use also. tenebrae was running the other day at 80 fps, but I reinstalled the 4.1.0.9 XP drivers and now it runs at 20 (max)... <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Sorry to hear you are having trouble DY357LX.

    Did you format & reinstall from a clean slate? Or go the "upgrade" path? Upgrading your current installation is always bad news and causes things to break. A lot. Its always best to install an OS (any os) from a clean slate.

    It might be a hardware problem too. For example, Windows XP has a lot better memory management, but as a result a defective stick of ram will cause nasty nasty errors like core dumps and etc, whereas on win98 it might GPF, if even that. Its still messed up, but the win98 memory management is so bad it doesn't do anything about it, or something.

    What are your system specs?
    Is maybe heat an issue causing the lockups? XP is a more system intensive OS than 98 so thus it'd generate more heat on the same system than 98 did...

    Hopefully Monse will see this thread and he'll be able to REALLY help you. heh.

    OK here's what we did (me and mate Phil)

    We formated my 80 gig drive and installed Windows 98SE
    with the "Standard" installation. We then ran the XP disc's
    compatibility check. We couldn't install XP from a freshly
    formated drive because I don't have XP drivers for my Ethernet
    Card or my Sound Card (the Creative site is absolute hell for
    finding the right files). So once we had 98SE in and running
    we slapped on XP Professional and it sometimes run fine.
    But whenever I try to check my email via Outlook my comp
    freezes up. So I thought it was just Outlook, but then Hitman 2
    froze and it also froze when i browsing the ns.org site.

    I rolled my drivers back to 40.41 but still no joy.
    If XP doesn't start improving then i'll be sticking 2000 on or
    using my old dusty 98SE.

    SYSTEM SPECS:

    Windows XP Pro
    AMD Duron 900mhz
    80 gig hard-drive.
    640 meg of SDR Ram.
    GeForce 4 MX 440
    SoundBlaster Live 5.1

    Anything else needed?

    In case visual quality is higher-priority to you than having a fast framerate regardless of artifacts/tearing, I'd heavily recommend the Omega drivers. They're basically the exact same as the last WHQL-certified version of the NVidia detonators, but have changed a lot of visual quality settings that you aren't even allowed to access in the advanced properties of the display adaptor.

    Do read the readme file for them before using; most settings except anti-aliasing and overclocking can't be changed without resetting all of those behind-the-scenes customizations, at which point the only way to get them back is to reinstall the Omega drivers.

    Get the drivers and before/after comparison screenshots at <a href='http://www.OmegaCorner.com' target='_blank'>OmegaCorner</a>

    vsync is off in all apps, this includes HL, UT2k3, and tenberae. HL is usually running at 50, but UT2k3 and tenebrae both run at 10-20. (geforce3 ti200)
    then again it overheated once.

    I can't seem to hunt down the right ones.
    If you've ever tried to get ANYTHING from Creative you'll
    know that its a right pain in the **** and not very
    user friendly.
    I'll have a look later and maybe swear at bit more cus
    I just crashed out of C&C Generals <!--emo&:angry:--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/mad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad.gif'><!--endemo-->

    No trick there. Just click support, download drivers, and then tell them what product you have. No magic involved. :P

    What ethernet card do you have, I'll find the driver for that too?

    Then you can format and reinstall w/o going through win98. That's almost surely causing you lots of problems.

    Last night whilst playing Hitman 2 I was thinking
    about the option to format which appears when you
    right click your C:\ from opening MY COMPUTER.
    What would I need if I clicked FORMAT from there?
    As stupid as thats sounds i've only ever seen a Format
    done from DOS. Would I need the XP Pro disc in the CD-ROM
    drive? Would it even start with CD-ROM support?

    NOTE: Hitman 2 makes me think.... thats why it's cool <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Why don't you let XP update the drivers for you??

    Go into system manager find the hardware, right click on it and select update driver. Then you (should) get an XP compatable driver

    I've had good experiences with the Asus custom nVidia drivers. You can get them <a href='http://www.asus.com/support/download/selectftp.aspx?l1_id=9&l2_id=2&l3_id=3&m_id=22&f_name=Win2KXP3140H.exe~zaqwedc' target='_blank'>here</a>.

    You'll have to show windows where to find the drivers (update driver --> select from list --> "have disk" --> directory where you unzipped the files) because the Asus setup won't detect your card as an asus and will quit.

    Ijust use the detonator 41.0.1.9 series. After I use the refresh fix from voodoofiles, I'm kicking booty and getting 85FPS constantly unless things get SUPER hectic. and that's just becuase my monitor can only handle 85Hz before it gets spazzy.

    I eventually solved the problem and can round that problem into one line:
    "Windows XP hates me" <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
