Hey guys, I always wanted a server of my own. I looked at all the sites offering ones but the price seems a little high for me. Somehting like $150 for a 16 person server. So I decided I wanted to start a server of my own. I have a cable connection but something tells me thats not good so I want to get a dsl line thats fast. I was wondering what you guys use and how well it works. Im new and was just curious how you guys do it. Thanks. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

I run a server on a Debian linux box. It is connected via Optimum Online cable modem. It has no bandwidth issues for a 12 player, most of the lag issues are CPU related. You may want to give your cable modem a try. Who is your provider and what are your results for the speed test at dslreports.com?

    Results are great from dslreports.

    I have optimum online too/

The problem is you can only get 1 connection comming in, and I was looking for a 16-20 person server atleast. So I was thinking of getting a dsl connection from verizon. This pacakage "Advanced DSL Plus Up to 1.5M/128K "

    Do you think thats good?

I have a seperate machine that I would run the server on and I would use linux.

    What do you guys think?

The more Upload the better. I have that verizon package at home (near philly) and it is good. However you might want to look into a 368k/368k dsl package. The extra upload ability will help.

If you decide not to use verizon be careful. If the DSL signal has to travel over lines owned by verizon it will be limited to verizons max speeds (768 down) However if they now have that 1.5 advanced package it might no longer be the case.

Try your cable and see how it works. No need to change services if one works fine.

you definetly need a lot more upload than 128kbits/sec for a good server, unless you want a good server with only like 4 people on it

so a good server has a good upload speed?

ok....and I was going to use verizon along with cable because i want a dedicated server line and a line for the rest of the people in my house to use.

384 isn't much at all with a max bandwidth of:
    384/8 = 48KB/s
say you set maxrate to 9999 (effectively 10000), then you can support only:
    48000 / 10000 = 4.8 clients.
    maxrate at 5000 doubles this to 9.6 -> 9, MAYBE 10 clients.

you need more upload than 384Kbps to run a good server (by that i mean one that people will come back to often, and be very popular since you have space enough to accomodate the people that want to play).

also, don't forget the high cpu load on the system.

Not neccearily true; bandwidth calculations aren't as straight forward as that. I run a 12 player server and it uses about 225-275 kilobits a second. This includes NS game server, web site, messageboards, stats, my domain e-mail server and remote administration software. See attached image below:
