Aliens...
I was wondering something. I've finally figured out how the 1337 alien team works, they evolve into higher species.

1:Do any special abilities you evolve as an alien of one level, get transfered when you evolve to the next level? Or at least as some sort of "upgrade points"? Or do you start from scratch at each evo level?

2:In future NS's, will aliens still be level based?

3:Assuming #2 is a no. Will we see more levels for the aliens in the future? Like maybe a few in-between levels, or perhaps you can choose between 2 diffrent lev 2 or lev 3 aliens for example?

    1. Well, first off, there is the alien classes, and the benefits they get, and then there is the alien building upgrades. There is a total of 12 upgrades so far, and more planned, ranging from increased speed, to advanced hive sight. Once you research one, they continue with you till you die. That about answers 1.

    2. I really doubt that there will be other alien classes and i think the level system will stay, HOWEVER, nothing on beta 2 or whenever is official, so i can't make a sound judgement .

    3. I think number 2 answered this, lol, but yeah, i doubt there will be any other alien classes, howevever, i WOULD like to see different builder types, maybe offensive and defensive, each having 2 buildings each, movement and offensive for the one, and defensive and sensory for the other, along with more depending on flay puts more in!

Ok, i hope that answers you questions!, if you got anymore feel free to ask, however i can't tell you much about the gameplay, rules, because EVERYTHING is subject to change

Thank you Cyanide, good Q/A around here.

So builder is that level 4 class right?

How do the builders work exactly(if you know)?
Such details would be build time, money(or replacement), max buildings etc.

Also, you said "keep abiltiies until you die". Explain that? I assume you mean "Builder aliens build structures which give you access to new powers. Indivdual aliens can research ANY new power that is offered by a building. If that alien dies, he loses those new powers and must re-research them". For some reason something like that stuck in my head. Is that correct?

    Builder is class 2.

As for build times, costs, max buildings, and the like, that's still being worked out in the playtests. Costs change from week to week, as do limits on the numbers of buildings.

And, at least how things work now, you've got the abilities right. They may change in the future, but you described pretty well how they were working a week and a half ago. (Could change.)

I'll try to field this one with what I know currently. As always, bear in mind that this is currently the way things work, but this is by no means the way things will definitely stay, so all of this info is subject to change.

    1. Some special abilities are unique to each class of alien, and each class of alien has several of these unique abilities that can be gained or lost depending on how well the overall alien team is doing (how many hives are active). Alien players may also 'purchase' upgrades of sorts when they are avaliable, and these do transfer between evolutions or devolutions. Currently, these purchased upgrades stick with the alien until it dies, regardless of what class it is. This setup provides a huge number of possible variations and customization for the alien players.

    2. My guess is that the aliens will stay level-based. But, I also think that free movement between these classes during the game, as long as the player can afford it, will also remain an important part of the game. The important distinction here is that the alien classes are not like TFC classes, in that you are restricted to the same one for the duration of the game.

    3. I don't think anyone can say with certainty at this point whether or not there will always only be 5 classes of aliens. Anything's possible, but there are limitations of the engine that could play a part in this. I think you'll find that between the flexibility in the classes, the customizable upgrades, and the unique but changing abilities will keep things interesting and fun for a very long time.

*Edit* I was writing this on and off while talking to my wife for the last 1.5 hours, so quite a few people beat me to the punch.

I'm just wondering what exactly happens to an alien when it dies. Do you start over as a Bob with no upgrades? Do you lose upgrades, but keep your level? Vice versa? Do you keep upgrades AND level?

Ditto marines... when a marine dies, does he have to be re-equipped (probably)? Are there non-weapon based upgrades that aren't lost when he dies?

Finally, how often do you tend to die? Having to completely re-tech tree as an alien because you're dying frequently (due to short life span, not poor playing) would be kinda lame. Then again, NOT losing levels and upgrades means gaining Lvl 5 is only a matter of time.

coil we can't say anything currently, because everything is subject to change, sorry

While I do know that it's subject to change, it seems that currently when an alien dies he losses everything but the extra RP he has. You can use these to get some lvls or abilites. Heck this also means you might be able to camp somewhere (Bob is supposed to be good at hiding...) until you hit Lvl 5 and blindside those marines.

You could do that Hida but you'd be missing out on all the fun, not earning any frags and getting a smaller and smaller slice of the resource points.

I believe the idea for marine team 'upgrades' is that they are team wide. The commander might research improved armor and all the marines get it, including the newly spawned reinforcements. This doesn't includes specifics like new weaponary or gadgets of course.

blah blah blah subject to change blah blah blah play testing blah blah blah...

So I think I see how it MIGHT be(subject to change).

You get RP, RP doesn't go away if you die. You can spend your RP on upgrading and evolving, but if you die, then you lose your investment(and waste all those RP's).

Now this has a problem. On one hand, people shouden't be able to become powerful aliens too quickly, on the other hand, if evolving is too expensive then people don't think it would be worth the risk to go really lavish.

From a good amount of the footage i have seen in that trailer, and from what others are saying, you seem to be basing some of the alien upgrades and such on the Zerg Race in starcraft. Perhaps when Version 1 or Version 2 is done, someone will make a mod using natural selection's work to do a starcraft mod for half life. From the footage, i am sure it is capable. w00t

There's currently a Starcraft mod in the works for Serious Sam (2?), which I checked out and frankly doesn't look all that impressive. Apparently it's got Blizzard's seal of approval, though, which surprised me. Generally the problem with doing a mod based on a movie or game is that the parent company will slap a cease-and-desist on you so fast you'll get whiplash (called "Foxing" after FOX shut down an Aliens mod).

Anyway, who needs a starcraft mod when you have Natural Selection?

Wasn't there a starcraft mod many many months ago for Half-life?

There was, but I don't think they ever finished. May have been more than one, even.

That Aliens mod was very nicely done too. A shame it got Foxed. It did lead to Gloom's creation though.
