<div class="IPBDescription">help with pc issues</div> Ok, lemme give you guys a lil insight on what I've done so far.
My old computer was an HP pavillion, it had a cd rom, burner, floppy, and drive on it, and the installed OS was Windows ME.

I went ahead and got most of the components for a new computer, I went ahead and bought the case, and put a new asus p4g8x deluxe motherboard into it.
I went ahead and put my old hard drive (still with Windows ME) into the new comp, the floppy drive, and my rom and burner.

I'd like to install the windows xp professional with service pack 1 that I bought onto this hard drive, but the problem is, that my windows ME is no longer registering my rom and burner (prolly a driver issue I bet.) The problem is, I think most of these driver issues (including one where I no longer have sound after putting in the new motherboard) would be fixed up by getting windows xp installed clean, a fresh start as it were. The problem though is figuring out how to do it when it won't load my roms Any help is much appreciated!

do you need to back up anything off the drive before you install XP? If not screw ME and it's no drive recognizing self. Just boot off the Windows XP cd you have and follow the directions. You might have to go into the bios and make the one of the cdroms a boot device.

Shouldn't matter when your installing the OS fresh. As long as the roms are connected up properly and you have formatted the disk using a boot disk the roms should run. They dont need windows drivers when installing the OS fresh they run off the bios.

I just tried going ahead and making both the cd roms boot devices, to boot off the windows xp cd, only each time it gave me the message "No emulation..."

And then proceeded to boot up windows ME as normal <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

I'm at a loss. These are samsung drives (the burner and regular cd rom), which I'm told are crap. People have told me to go as far as buying a new rom, with the drivers, installing that, and proceding.

The roms (if they are acpi) will or should run off the bios. Try setting them as a boot device one at a time. You wont need new drives and xp will prolly have xp drivers for them anyways. Keep at it I'm sure it can easily fixed rather than buying new stuff. Do you have a boot disk? Use that if you have it.

X, I am realy hoping that you reformated before you installed XP

If you have not, back up all those random things you want to keep AND REFORMAT

it will make your comp run MUCH MUCH BETTER. Not only that but 'upgrading' windsows will leave you with alot of probs ;D

He's right. Clean install on a reformatted HD is the only way. Jus upgrading does ugly ugly things to your computer.

Oh yeah, believe me, I've heard that one enough not to do anything BUT clean format/install.

    Yep, so everything's gravy.

    The specs are:

    p4 2.4ghz processor
    asus p4g8x deluxe mobo
1gig pc2100ram (but runs dual channel)
and soon to be radeon 9700 pro vid card

Nice. Pretty close to my specs. Wish I had bought the ati 9700 instead of the geforce 4600 tho <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
