pretending to be a noob?
Sometimes my name's James Pond and I pretend to be a noob and I ask questions, and all I get is RTFM! Or the famous... : Leave this server if you don't know how to play you ******** *********** etc etc.

I know it's maybe not the best servers I've tried it on but it has to be around 20-30 and everyone except one with the same results

Where is this community going?

P.S. : Be kind to noobs if you've played NS for a 'long' time, don't just insult them and then don't think they can't be 'more skilled' then you. Have happend to me twice... I go Gorge and everyone says: GO BACK TO SKULK NOOB! I just tell them I'm NOT a noob and I was just pretending, but of course they won't give it up. When the second Hive is up and we're going to win no matter what, they STILL insult me and say the other Gorge did everything, even if he's AFK . Excuse me, I'm going to 'noob' a little.

No kidding. Every server I jump on, all i see is "n00b this" and "n00b that." People need to relax and help these guys out. I started playing NS not too long ago, and I can remember what starting out was like. NS is harder to get into than most games because it is very different, it takes a while to adjust. I was very fortunate and jumped on a server where most people were friendly and willing to guide me, and now I do the same for others. Just think about it this way, the more you help out others, the better experience people will have, the better the experience is, the more people will play, the better quality of players, etc....

EDIT:
Here is some usefull Information:

there is a difference between "n00b" and "newbie" (i.e. new player)

you should help out a "newbie" at all times. You should kindly tell a "noob" to press F4.
a noob is one of them people who will run off to get killed somewhere..and will blame the commander, someone who will hump the armoury when he should be phasing, someone who thinks this is CS,

keep this in mind.
So what you mean is: you run around pretending to be a 'newbie' who suddenly has amazing skill?
i dont personally see the point but hey...its your way.

I agree. If someone is new to the game, help them out. Even if you lose, so what? It's just a game.

Gorges and commanders get it the worst. All too often I see
"Get out of the comm chair NOW you ****ing newb ****er!"
"Get off gorge or I'll have you banned n00b!"
and so on.

A newbie comm in a game I played a few weeks ago was doing fine, building stuff and so on. Then he made the fatal mistake of asking how to do something. Instead of helping him out he just got verbal abuse and people started to VOTE THE ***** No0b OFF!!!!

Why not just give them some advice so they can learn and become a better player, instead of swearing at them and making never want to bother going comm/gorge again?

People aren't born expert players, give them a chance.

The only "n00bs" that I get upset with are those who don't even BOTHER to read the manual or come here to learn how to play. Nothing is worse than slowing down a game with a bunch of NSplayers screaming how to buy weapons, how to build something, or wondering why there is a weird pink tint to their screen when they evolve. I have no problem with explaining a better way to do something or a little trick, but some things are inexcusable...

I don't mind helping the newbie Players but when ALL
they ever do is ask stupid questions without even glancing
at the manual (or even the main website to get a general
idea what that game is about) , thats just plain annoying.

I completely lost it this morning with a player called "Sally"
because Sally keep asking "how do I get the menu to pop-up?"
or "what do I do now?" . OK askin these question once is ok,
but i was quick to answer Sally with straight-forward answers
and nicely typed (no typo's or anything so clarity was all there).

After 5 "how do I built those spikey things?" I decided that Sally's slot
on the server was being wasted and kindly swore at her and told
her to come back when she'd read the manual.

Sorry Sally, but you'd pushed me (and several others) over the line.
I'm all for helping people....... but you Sally were beyond help.

The moral of this story: Be nice, encoruage the reading of the manual.

i have won game's with noob comm becaus we helped him out... worked great...

but then offcourse, i wouldn't like a noob comm all the time

but i hate thoose that say they are so damn good and vote the comm out becaus he didn't got a hmg or jp or something becaus either we didn't have the rez or becaus we hadn't upgraded or something...

then the first thing he does is to put up something we already have, or screws everything up...

or at the beginning someone come's in and starts yelling "omg... we have no protection in base.. tf and turrets ASAP" or something like that when you don't need any protection in the beginning exept for maybe a marine or 2 depending on how many you are... and with a pg to the base you can go pretty fast to the base probably.

well im an admin of one powerful and one not so powerful ns server(s) down at www.thehavennet.org.ukHaven seems very commited to forcing teamplay and teaching new players how to play the game, Ive even known him to host proper session nights for new players who want to get ahead quickly. Maybe the standard on these servers isnt as high as people have come to expect but theres no cpu slowdown usually and the atmosphere is good whcih makes up a decent game for me. Is it wrong of me? In my eyes not

Geez, I know that it can be difficult, especially with thick newbies, but don't become elitist like the linux community. Do you know why it struggles so much? It's not because it's inferior. It's because of the steep learning curve and the "rtfm!" attitude of the user base.

I read the manual before my first game. The manual is not very clear or comprehensive. I was left with the impression that the karaa all go through this 5 cycle evolution phase over the course of the game. Imagine my surprise when I had to use a menu (which I first had to bind to a key because by default it's unbound) and could evolve into anything. I spent many hours with a friend in a 1x1 match so that we could learn all the functionality for both teams. Even now we get surprised by things (like the jump key when commander).

It's natural to get frustrated with newbies, but remain open and support them. This game is complex, just in functionality. When you start thinking about strategy it gets worse. Don't expect them/us to know both within the first month of play.

the tutorial rocked.

And first thing you should do is check out what the mouse does. That is how I instantly found the right click menu.

Moving around is very basic and you risk messing stuff up if you just bang on the keyboards - I suggest looking through your keybinds but somehow I have serious doubts about n00b ability to do that.

Dunkin Dynamite, the right mouse button is bound to the menu in the install package, but the update zips unbind it. I only knew that there should be a menu because I initially forgot to update my ns installation.

hmm I have never been a "n00b" compared to everyone because I started playing since release... So nobody knew the game much better than me. But I'm pretty sure newbies should be helpes.. to some extent.

The guy who says "I comm ok?" "ok do you know how to?" "sure" *hops in* "how do you build?" is beyond that extent.

Someone who says "I comm ok?" "ok do you know how to?" "more or less, but I never really was. Please help me" and if everyone agrees to let him comm and help (you'd usually see that on very small servers) that is perfectly fine.

Oh yeah and the guy who goes skulk, then gorge, then build a couple of ots, then back skulk, asks why he cant go onos with 70 res, decides to go lerk, asks how to fly, then goes back gorge is stupid and should be kindly helped, and if he refused ("shuttup I play NS for 2 years now") then thats a stupid n00b.

oh yeah, here's one...

me: do you know how to gorge?
noob: yeah *builds tons of OCs without a single res, doing no DCs and not going to get a hive*
me: get some rts
noob: I know how to play
me: doesnt seem like it
noob: shuttup I play ns for 2 years now
me: oh sorry.. I only played since last halloween.
noob: you noob! I play for longer
me: ... that was the release date last time I checked...
*noob leaves server*

how embarassing that's the type of noob I hate...

I remember the other week, I'd somehow messed up my cfg, so I showed as NSPlayer ( I've been playing since day 1 ), It refused to let me change my name until the next round, but I was quite pleasantly surprised by how many players tried to give me pointers and help me out..so, it was nice to see noob-bashing isn't compulsory..

I explained what was up, but I don't think anyone believed me until I started calling in "3 HA incoming feedwater, PG goin up outside.." etc..

On the other hand, I had a very similar experience to cereal killR shortly after release..

Leet: Joo are all noobs, yoo all suck f**k Sake!! noobs!!
Me: Yes, I am noob, he is noob, we are all noobs
Leet: I am not n00b I been playin for long time!GIVE ME HA! HMG!! ( we have been playing for 3 minutes at this point )
Me: It was released last week, were you a playtester?
Leet: f**k You noobs I played betas!11

Leet proceeds to get killed a lot, leaves server.

Funny how the "FU NOOBZ" types, always seem to know very little about the game and run away when it becomes clear they will lose..

Sigh...understanding...and maybe just showing a *hint* of inteeligence is too muc to ask of the common masses.

I believe Einstein said, "There are only two things that are inifite: The universe, and human stupidity. And I'm not so sure about the universe."

anyone who thinks "pretending" to be a n00b is fun, or funny, or worth trying, should rot.
n00bs have been sent upon all of us to try our patience, tax our energy, and generally **** us off.
'pretending' to be a newbie, however, might be a nice move if you're wondering just how nice some of the players you usually play against are. However, in CS if you did stuff like that, you are often accused of scouting (I only play on clan servers). *shrug* This wasn't really needed in this thread, I just felt like I needed to say it.

n00bies are 1/2 of the reason why I don't play natural selection 24/7 anymore.
• taboofirestaboofires Join Date: 2002-11-24 Member: 9853Members
When you consider the general gaming industry trend to either sell you a game that doesn't really need a manaul (in-game comprehensive tutorial or simple game play), or needs a manual and doesn't really give you one, it's not really surprising that people don't bother to read it. This is esp. true about most FPS games, where you can just bum around for a few minutes and get the hang of it.

Natural Selection, however, is not one of those games. The game is not entirely intuitive, because is has features that you probably never would have thought of. Parasites open doors? Heal spray hurts things? You can weld a marine or vent? The manual is the source for answering these questions, and you won't be able to fully enjoy the game without reading at least some of it. Or you could get by just reading the forums, which are full of juicy info too.

Now, if someone asks a question nicely, I'll tell him the answer. However, some questions you just can't explain during the course of a match. Like, for instance, "How do I command?" To that, my answer is go read the manual, because doing it badly will screw your whole team.

As for the CS players who think they're god, I just ignore them and hope they go away. Avoid giving them guns, etc.
• CrouchingHamsterCrouchingHamster Join Date: 2002-08-17 Member: 1181Members
I should add, not all noobs are bad news.. I played one game with a bloke who had never played before, never read the manual. He asked if we could have HA/HMG, we explained , no, we need to research them first, someone else added " look at the top of your HUD, that's our res", he accepted all this, carried on with the game..

The guy actually turned out to be a damn good team player, and we went on to pimp-smack a team of clanners who thought it would be funny to clan stack on a public server and pick on some noobs..

Anyway, after a sound thrashing ( and I do mean sound, we'd have done them in even earlier if our comms PC hadn't crashed..) the clan all threw a strop and left the server, and random noob became another NS convert..

\o/

Give 'em a chance I say..
