Am I The Only Person That Never Noticed..

The muzzle flash?
Everyone seems to be complaining about it, but I have never actually noticed it in-game. I've been playing since release, and I'm, not bragging () a great marine player.. but I've never noticed the flash. Maybe I'm just used to looking past it, but it's never really bothered me.

Muzzle flash or not, the skulks still die in half a clip of bullets..

Am I the only person who hasn't noticed the muzzle flash before?

And the skulk's bite doesn't bother me at all either.

Weird.

Why did you even start a new thread, can we quickly close this because you could've responded to the exisint one, this is pointless.

dude, its not pointless at all, theres totally a good reason for starting a new thread about it (sarcasm). since im posting, i guess ill answer the question, i never noticed the flash or the skulk bite until people started mentioning it, and the fact that people complain about it is dumb, thats like complaining that the gun itself gets in your way. ok, well ive done my ranting for tonight

.............oh yeah, SEARCH BUTTON!!!!

[bragging]i guess cuz im so pro and yeah i can adapt so well [/bragging]

but in all honesty iz cuz im so absorbed into the game small things like that dont bother me.. plus i have more important things in game to be observant about.. ie.. sound see if any skulk legs are showing over a cieling or doorway etc hahah....

Yes some people can see through it, some don't see it and some don't even notice it. I would like to point out two things (AGAIN).

Peopl with crap computers have a bigger problem.
1/. Lower res. The flash takes up more of the screen.
2/. If your frame rate is as low as mine is, there is NO gap between each muzzle flash, meaning that for the duration I am firing, over 1/4 of the screen is completely covered in white muzzle flash.

I've noticed that myself. Before I had fpsmax at 75 or whatever the standard is, and after I lifted the cap It has been easier to see through the muzzle flash. This is kind of wrong since I think even people with lower end computers should have a fair chance. I've a p4 2.0ghz@2.24ghz and it's not always I have 100fps....

On my monitor, it's a nearly solid sprite.
On my friends monitor, you have to look for it, to see it.
We both use default gamma, default brightness.
He's using a GEforce 3 (something).
I'm using a GEforce 4 Ti4200.
I think it's up to the videocards.
I think that is stupid.
Maybe I'm bias, because it affects me, but I think it should be removed because of how much it differs from person to person.
I don't enjoy shooting and hoping for the best.

hey obibun, the guys on this forum really get upset when you start new threads. apparently everything has been talked about and doesnt need to be anymore.

flash annoyance is dependant on the stats of the PC and the user's own environment. (sitting in a dark room playing marine in a dark hallway may help you see skulks, but when the flash from your pistol lights up the room and knocks you out of your chair, theres problems.)

Well did you ever notice how the LMG's fire range is slightly cone-shaped? What I mean is, it's more of a spray than a straight line of fire. Not as large as the shotgun, but spread out none the less. This sort of helps compensate for those who can't see through the blast from their gun.

And if you don't like it, well you can always knife everything

The Muzzle flash was annoying at first but since I started playing it has bugged me less and less. You just get use to it. Though one thing that annoys me about NS at times is how it brightens up my screen every so often. Then I have to go and use the reset exe they got. I play for more of the mood, and being able to see all the dark places takes the fun out of the game.

i remember seeing that pic AAAGES ago...
and its still slightly pointless...maybe that player should fire in short bursts and stop holding the trigger?
• SoBe_DragonSoBe_Dragon Join Date: 2002-12-04 Member: 10465Members
I know you saw that ages ago...i posted it ages ago, and thats how old this infernal topic is.

yeah thats me firing. Its not the point of firing in bursts, the fact is that muzzle flash isnt translucent whatsoever, and its too big.

I tried capturing some screenshots of the cstrike muzzle flashes but they are so breif that its impossible. I captured some of the DoD muzzle flashes and those are smaller and translucent, so you can see through them.

Another fact that stands...the HMG muzzle flash is smaller then the LMG....that doesnt make much sense to me =) A good way to compare muzzle flashes to NS is to make demos of yourself firing, then watch the demos frame by frame. You'll see what i'm talkin about =) Maybe i'll even make a big picture will all of the muzzle flashes from the different games, just to get my point across...

The mussleflashes were designed on purpose to inhibit your view. This gives skulks and lerks an actual chance to dodge your shots as the musslefash hides the crosshair, making precise shooting difficult.

I personally haven't noticed the HMG flash being smaller, although thats probably because after half a second of shooting you've already killed whatever it was you were aiming at.

Short-bursting 'Ultra-Marines' are the most frustrating thing in existance from a skulks point of view.

Actually , in answer to the original question (and ignoring pointless flames/rants) I have never noticed the muzzle flash being a problem. I run a Geforce 3 ti200. I also must have missed some earlier threads on this. I had noticed people blitching about it but never realized I never even noticed the flash.

check your video card settings. i've seen it under a variety of names

"alpha channels"
"alpha layers"
"stipple alpha"

they all affect transparencies. i have a gf4200 and muzzle flashes are transparent and no prob to see through.

If you think the muzzle flash isnt a big deal, try playing with it off for a game, tehn try going back to half your screen being blocked.

I'm not advocating turning it off, it's part and parcel with the mod. But until the CVAR is locked by the mod, every time a marine has impecable aim it will never be credited to skill.

I did some tests a while ago... And at least in 800x600x16 on my comp...

40 fps and below means a solid muzzle flash blob. Above 45 and it distinctly starts to flicker and become easier to see through.
• ViPrViPr Resident naysayer Join Date: 2002-10-17 Member: 1515Members
i have a theory that people with higher frame rates are able to see better while firing. it depends on whether the flash is programmed to appear while the player is holding the fire button or whether it's programmed to appear only when each bullet comes out assuming that in some frames no bullet comes out and in some frames one bullet comes out while they are holding the fire button.
