Search - A Worrying Trend

<div class="IPBDescription">...stop this madness</div> Can people refrain from posting the tirade of 'Use the search button' posts as it's driving me nuts. Firstly it's a pointless comment (and if I were a cyncial man I would suggest it's just being used to increase someone's post count) because clearly the poster wants to start a new thread and let's face it why shouldn't they? Secondly and more importantly if we don't get new ideas / comments / discussions whether about new ideas or existing discussions then how is the community supposed to grow. There are board admins who monitor these forums so why do some people feel they should dictate what should and should not be posted. Frustrated police men should go elsewhere.

    I've cunningly concealed the 'search' function as a link on the page. It's marked, deviously enough as 'Search', you'll find it between 'Help' & 'Members'....

    Actually its a good point. No one is forsing you to read the post, so if the title looks a bit to familiar, ignore it.

    Obviously if the titles obscure you could always moan that they have used a crap title...

    I don't know if it's just me, but every time I try to use the Search function, I can't find what I'm looking for, even if it's a specific post I remember reading, and I know key words from it to search on. Anyone else have this problem?

    Every time I try to search I get a 'page not found' error.

    Nope.

    But it's frustrating to have already discussed X, where X has been posted five times this week by new people. In many cases, while a thread on _exactly_ that topic is still on the main page. Take marine handgrenades, for example. Search, you'll find well over 30 threads (being optimistic in that low of a number) where it's been beaten to death time and time again.
    It wears to have to repeat the same explanation over and over again, every time someone has the same 'wonderful' idea and doesn't bother to read why it WON'T work, in the thread that someone posted yesterday about it.

    I understand the point made by Talesin but disagree (in a nice non - flame way) with the fundamentals of the post. In my opinion this statement sums it up:

    <!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->It wears to have to repeat the same explanation over and over again<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    A discussion board is for exactly that 'discussion'. If some members of the community feel the need (and maturity) to help out other members of the board by offering explantions to repeat posts then I would suggest a pointer to the releavnt post more useful.

    Part of a discussion board / forum is to go over things againa and again (and again in the the case of grenade launchers). Let the posters post and if you need to help out then chuck them something useful. The spate of 'use the serach form' responses is very annoying and are normally made with an assumed sense of superiority that also annoys. Now board admins sort out the nature of the boards and it should be regulated by them and not others. For the record the offenders I am trying to target are the newer members of the community and not the Talesin's of the world.

    Yay! I'm a subgroup!

    Heh. Didn't really think I was flaming.. I just tend to speak my mind, and lean on a point.

    Posession of a mind implies understanding of what the 'search' button does, and why it should be used. Wait.. correction. Posession of a mind does not. Posession of a mind capable of formulating coherent statements, and posting them on the forums, does.
