New Strat. Mines!

I just played a game with 24 people in it, where the marine team used primarely mines to defend their base. We had a "Jackass" commander, or so everyone thought, who was just messing around... BUT IT WORKED. We probably put out over 500 mines during the game, and just litered anywhere we wanted defended with mines. Any time a skulk would get by the walls of them, they would try killing one of us and usually end up falling on one of them by accident and killing himself. This tactic was nearly flawless if everyone participates and keeps the mines up. In the end, we kept sewer and generator clear for the whole game, and only built a phase and and armory at each. Actually, in the end we had 4 turrets at the sewer. Then we all got heavy armor and gren launchers and took on their last hive.
It took probably a good 70-80 min to finish the game, and I'm sure the aliens weren't having the greatest time, but my friend and I were laughing our **** off at how well it was working. I'm sure it also helped that it was 4am, and everyone was gitty.
I wish I had taken some screenshots, but I didn't have a ss button, oh well. I dunno if anyone who was playing with me is gonna read this, but if you do, and have your own pics, post em.

    Mines are **** when used properly...marines actually "mine rushed" our hive in Cargo Bay. It was being built and it was our second hive and all we had was skulks. As it went up all this marines ran in and dropped mines EVERYWHERE. We couldn't do anything...while they killed the hive skulks would just run in, try to stop them, and just blow up. I've never feared mines until that game o_o

    Yea well that doesnt work when one considers that in a proper game,the aliens would love rushing into your mines to make you waste 8 res.

    Too many mines in the one area crash the server. It's amazing you had '500' mines going without a single crash @_0

    More power to you for pulling this tactic off. Mines are truly truly under-appreciated by the vast majority of commanders out there.

    Mines are great for securing your preciuos buildings against skulk runs...

    I had a tough game as alien last night, the marines secured every phase gate and res tower with multiple trip mines...we won in the end but that is one damn good mine tactic.

    Heh. 500 throughout the game. Although, you're right about crashing the server, but it took a lot. When the game "ended" there was one alien left alive in a vent with some defense towers. All the marines started saying "OMG WE NEED MORE MINES!" and so the comm dumped out about 300 resources worth under the hive we just killed. About 5 of us just started grabbing them and planting them non stop. We never *actually* won, if you know what I mean =P.

    Minerush is the second funniest tactic in NS. Gorge rush is the funniest <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> As a com I always throw mines and jetpacks to my marines so they can mine the vents. For example nameles hive is very difficult to defend because there is 2 entrances and 2 vents in there. Mines take care of those easily.

    A gorg can spit at a mine and blow it up, I'm sure that if someone knew that you wouldn't have had such a happy time defending your base.

    I'm not sure if they can get landmines tho, but spit will trip laser mines.

    Ok I was playing in this map (the one with viaduct, power silo, and cargo) and the marines put down a lot of mines in the hallways near their respawn. Everyone was like OMG....it's impossible to pass. Then I realized very single mine was ont he floor. All I had to do was wall climb over them. The marines were like WTF! STUPID COMM!

    For the past two or three days, that has been the primary strategy of the marines on the server i frequent. It works so well because the marines end up locking down tons of resource towers, so the res is flowing in and they are able to properly upgrade. It's quite a deadly strategy, and if pulled off correctly, absolutely impossible to beat. The key is to lock down 2 hives with mines so the aliens cant get fades. If they do get fades, say bye-bye to those mines. As aliens, if you can stop the marines before they put up tons of mines at res nodes and capture yourself a 2nd hive, you can easily render the strategy useless.     spit does not kill land mines as I know.
    Mines are just great if there are no idiots placing 8 mines at one tiny place (gives just one kill) And as long as there are no fades and you dont have jetpacker mines.

    Actually a passage blocked with several mines will also hurt an Onos pretty much.

    But I think people don´t like them because of spending 8 res to a 5 blasts non reloadable weapon. They see it as a waste. Not to mention they eat your second slot (pistol).

    well I don´t like losing my pistol. Even to the welder.


    Mines should be in a fourth slot.

    What if mines were dropped to 5 rp's? Then it'd be 1 rp a kill, if placed right.

    The first thing that goes down after a PG is up in heavily contested hive is a pack of mines at base.

    A marine can pick it up, phase to the hive and lay down some quick/effective defence to give the builders extra time to get the defences up. Well placed mines can delay one, perhaps even two waves of skulks. By then hopefully the builders have got the Tfac and Turrets up.

    Mines are invaluable, and I recommend putting a few by the phase even if the hive has been secured with turrets.

    I've seen really sneaky people put mines just around corners in hot areas (lots of alien activity) of the map. If they get pack rushed they fall back behind a corner with skulks ripping after them and <b>BOOM!</b> "clean up on aisle six".

    Mines are great.

    Amen to that brother! Mines saved us from a uber deadly skulk rush that almost cost us a hive.

    Unfortunately, alot of pubbies and even comms out there don't realize how cheap and good mines are for protecting your base.
    One time most of the team, including the comm hmself, told me to shut up when i kept asking for mines and the comm wouldn't give them out.
    Unfortunately, our little pg rush on fusion was completely decimate thanks to the fact that we had no mines to protect the pg and tfac after skulks rushed us.
    Moral of the story- mines > turrets for cheap, fast, rushing defense. Always equip an attack group with a mine person, just like you would equip one with a welder.

    everytime i comm, if i have 1 decent marine who knows how to use mines i will give him a pack and tell him to go mine every rt in the map. Ive won quite a few games doing that, just put 1 or 2 mines on/around an empty rt and hope that the gorge isnt observent enough to notice (3/5 TIMES)

    Ahh yes mining is fun and effective for marines to use... until aleins get fade. Then 1 acid rocket later all your mines are gone and you have 8 dead marines.
