Sometimes it's fun, sometimes it really, <i>really</i> sucks. The big thing you need to know about are the insane system requirements - you'll need a killer rig and suber-1337 broadband to have any fun with the game.
You should wait until a bundled "Game of the Year" edition comes out, as they will likely bundle the original game with the expansion for future release.

Get it. The system requirements are high, but not that high. They fixed a lot of the CPU issues in the 1.3 patch. If you have broadband it is great, 56K will run, but you need to find a server close to you.

I've had it since day 1. The single player mode is absolute crap, BUT it really shines in Mulit-player! Lots of vehicles to choose from and fight over, quite a few different player classes (medics, engineers etc). The majority of servers are quite good, but tehre's always the odd few dominated by "Mr TK'er" and his jeep. There's a very good Battlefield 1942 community.
Download <a href='http://gamefiles.blueyonder.co.uk/blueyondergames/movies/battlefield1942/NBrigadeTheStunts.zip' target='_blank'>This Movie</a> and you'll be RUNNING to the store.
BF1942 is the **** man. Not only is it really fun but it's hilarious in a lot of ways. I love seeing some guy get in a jeep and kamikaze himself straight into a tank. The jeep went flying into the water and the guy just like blew up...It's fun to play
At the moment only BF1942, and halflife (with NS of course) are the only games installed on my computer. It really is fun, one of my favorite games. I would reccomend downloading the MP demo first though just incase it's not quite your "cup of tea".
Oh, and people are really just foolin' joo with these sys reqs. Get a cable modem and a GeForce4, and you should be able to run 10-20 fps on a 600MHz. Believe me, I've done it.

On an AMD +2200 with a GF4 128MB I get between 50 - 100 FPS depending on the situation.
You made me start playing again, 1.3 has made it much better, you know when you hit people...
Also my specs are 1.2ghz / 256ram / GF2, i have it on high effects and low detail, 60% textures, some maps are good, but imo battleaxe is the best map and it hardly lags!
Are Jeeps still tanks, and tanks still lightweights? I haven't played the newer version.
What really bugs me is that the Tiger tank isn't all that strong, and can be taken out with a measly Sherman, with only a few shots. I want it a BIT more accurate. I like the arcade style gameplay, but I would like it a bit better...

And I'm upgrading in little parts, not all at once <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
Also: Don't pick up BF1942 expecting much realism at all. It's totally a sim game, and the only things from WW2 are the settings and the weapons/teams. The actual fighting is pretty fun, but not "realistic."
Unreal Tournament is very realistic. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
respawning is realstic? picking up a mystic purple rune thing that doubles your damage is realistic? carrying around a jackhammer in case your pistol is out of ammo is realistic?
BF1942 probably has some of the most realistic combat I've seen in an FPS. The main thing, I'd say, is the fact that your bullets aren't hitscan, and they seem to fly at a pretty realistic velocity. Sniping in that game is very difficult, but very rewarding... spotting a target about a half mile away, watching how he runs, leading him by about ten feet, WHAM!, and he runs into your bullet. Nothing like it.
And the planes just rock. If being a lerk in NS was anything like flying a plane in BF1942 it'd be the perfect game. Especially if the lerks got torpedos.

I run it on an old system (700 mhz, 128 Ram, ony one more week until that tax return!!) but I have a new video card (GeForce 4 MX 420) and HIgh speed broandband, and except for turning down the graphics to medium seeting, I don't really see anything wrong with it, except long load times, but I am paitient.

and the mods that are coming out for it look extremely promising. EXTREMELY promising.
The demo ran just fine on my old 1.4ghz machine, so is the retail version much more system intensive or something?
If you like WW2 themed games and massive teamplay, I highly reccommend it.

It is a really fun game, I recccomend it.
