endless bloody uses...
If there's anything that's a bargain in this game it's mines. It's the quick defense to a hive that has a phase gate up. Dump a pack of mines around that phase gate and you won't have to worry about skulks surrounding it. In new hives the phase is by far the most important strucuture. Keep it alive and the rest will follow.
Vents are always popular and sometimes I put them across a door as a deterrent more than anything.

My build order is usually 2 infs, 1 armory, 2 packs of mines. Try and place the mines around he infantry portals. They are always prime targets.

You could write a book on these things. It's too bad they get misplaced so often.

One thing to watch out for with mines that i discovered while giving suppressive fire recently... acid rockets aren't the only thing that will destroy them. GORGE SPIT can do it too, even just by intersecting the laser beam. Keep that in mind, folks

Ack! That is a problem, I didn't know this at all. Fades of course, but gorges, argh. Well let's hope it brings them to the dangeros front lines where they can be brought down.

Anyways, about mines; If you really want to be super cheap

Place mines all over the ground under an active hive and around it...not only will skulks die as soon as they spawn, wasting time, but it does lots of damage to a hive as well...

Mines on ground > wall mines

Mines are great. But for god's sakes... when you know the aliens have fades, please refrain from putting them in a stack blocking the doorway. They WILL DO NO GOOD. The best place to put them is .. .well, I don't know, you have to trust tripmine experts on where to plant them. Directly around corners, at the bottom of ladders, just below vent exits, that's where you have to put them.

That sure needed to be said. It's quite frustrating when I hand out several packs of mines and the marines clump them all together. One acid rocket and all 5 are gone.
Just place them around corners and on the floor where the fades won't be expecting them(e.g.not in the doorway into the marine spawn)

I swear i spat at the mines as gorge last night and it didnt work, must of missed as i was in battle.

Got to love the guys that ask for mines when they have 2 hives.

I have killed many marines by acid rocketing the mines when a marines is in the middle of them. My favourite kill.

On that map with ventilation, sewer, and generator; and there is a vent leading into marine start from sewer vestibule.

Recently I played a game there with small teams and we were off to weld that vent. We the escort (2 guys) and 1 guy with welder. We the escort suck at our job and welder guy dies, other escort dies, leaving me alone :/ but I kill the last skulk.

Comm had also tried for the mining RT strat, so I had with me pack of mines. He says pick up welder and finish the job, and of course, I immediately hop down there, drop the mines and pick up the welder. I start welding but right away I hear skulking. I get nervous and break away to look around; multiple bogies incoming and I am at bottom about to die.

The idea lurking in the background of my mind comes to the fore, and I quickly try to grab the mines. I end up dropping the welder getting the mines dropping the mines getting the welder dropping the welder getting the mines all in a few secs. Once I finally have mines securely in hand I place them all around myself; right in front of the vent. I pick up the welder and start welding and skulks jump down chase me go booom!!

    w00t improv mine defense rocked.

As commander be flexible as well. I am not a very experienced commander so that in a certain game aliens acquired 3 hives. Their res flow was not spectacular so there was an onos sighting and little else.

As a marine I have had much experience directly fighting fades and the like so I outfit my rines properly, but from what I remember for some reason aliens had lerk skulk and a single onos which we had sent scurrying off.

I remember dropping mines to catch these subspecies of alien dog and also the cries of "wtf" and "he's a newb minelayer" from my rines ^^

Now, normally I am the one who says "you'll only kill us all" but I knew what I was doing (I like to think). My feeling was that with no fade sightings and a single onos, the aliens surely felt secure with their 3 hives and were saving up to go onos as much as possible. Furthermore that single onos was still out there alive and at large, and I felt quite sure that he, being onos, would come charging into base soon thinking he all invulnerable.

And he did exactly as I expected, come charging into base. The mines were placed poorly so only a few hit but my point and my rightness were vindicated

oh god a mine thread let me rant...I hate I hate I hate the way people place mines....it makes no sense at all. on the ground at doorways? what a joke... random places on the ground at base? eh wth? and i think worst of all is tripmines in wide/tall places. Ok people before you even touch a mine go skulk and while your doing so take note of what you hit first and where you hit it. Ok now that out of the way go back to marines and put a frigging mine THERE nowhere else. Mines are so good early game and so misused...makes ya wanna cry or something.

Alright this may sound like a really stupid question, but seeing as ive never seen mines waaaay late in the game before, do babblers trip mines?

Not sure if babblers trip them, start a LAN game and try it yourself!
Mines in really obvious places can be good sometimes, if you put one on the wall at about head height and another at skulk height, other aliens will go round and the skulk will try to go over them by using the wall/ceiling. Which is why you have mines all over the ceiling there
Doesn't always work, but often brings you some nice BBQ style

Babblers do trip mines, trip laser or direct contact.

Aye, mines are great for both teams.

As marines, you can use the defensivley, or us them and set them on top of hives as a jetpacker, causing some big time damage to it.

Of course, I always love to play a game where I'm a fade, and I'm in umbra, with 5 marines shooting at me, and one of them is dumb enough to whip out his pack of mines, and set them up all around them. So all of a sudden I see a laser shoot out of the wall, and they all start running frantically for their base again, and it only takes one acid rocket to kill 5 marines

So it's good for both teams. I do see a lack in common sense on where to place them, though. It frustrates me how quite often the commander drops marines, and some fellow named "NSPlayer(4)", who hasn't read the manual (I don't have a problem with new players, if they read the manual), picks them up, and sets them up in some corner, along the wall. So you have all these lasers shooting all over your base, but the mines are far from any help.

Oh well, I guess I jsut need to take it with a pinch of salt.

what is the detection radius of a proximity mine (how close do you have to be to the mine to make it explode)?

hmm, actually, when i go to JP HMG a hive, i like to bring a mine pack with me. At hives like noname and subspace where you're going to be owning it from a vent, some on the ground and in the vent can keep you alive for that extra clip you need to kill the hive.

Picture the whole offensive team equipped with mines and jetpacks. They fly into a hive and drop a whole bunch under the hive and in the area where aliens spawn. That'd be cool.

I played a game a week ago or so in ns_eclipse where the marines went to eclipse and bombareded the spawn area with mines. Aliens spawn and die, or shortly after they die, trying to attack the marines. It was quite neat.
