<div class="IPBDescription">Creative Labs - suck0ragE</div> hey ppl, 2 weeks ago i bought a <b>PNY Verto Gf4 Ti4200 64mb </b>from PcWorld.
before that i had a Inno3D Kyro2 gfx card and was getting between 30-60 fps avg (but about 15 when shot in the face by fade).
installled the new card, had problems so i took it back a week later when i had the time and they wudnt give me oney back, just a swap. so i ended up with a <b>Creative Labs</b> version of the same chipset.
i have been oh so very dissapointed because of practically the same frame rates!!! im running the game in 1024x768 and have tried in both 16-bit and 32-bit colours; same results.

SPECS:
AMD AthlonXP +1700,
512mb DDR-ram (pc2700),
I-Will XP333 mo/bo (ALi chipset), AGP2.0 @ 4x
40GB Hdd,
512K ADSL, WinXP Pro, DX 8.1 (i think)

it seems that these Ti4200 cards arent very useful when it comes to HL because of the lame framerates (for me anyway). one of my friends tells me he never gets below 60 (cos he on WinXP without the tweaks) and hes got a <b>GeForce 2 GTS</b>!!!
i use the tweaks and in either CS or NS, the only time i get 100fps is when im looking at a wall straight on <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> .

anyone else getting this kind of problem???

BTW, i got unreal2 installed today and have just played about 20 mins into the game... started off in default config.... <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo--> what a bummer - u wud think i could get a decent framerate in 800x600, but its only when im not fighting that it moves smoothly. i really feel like giving up on nvidia <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

    sorry about it being CS...
look at the netstat - 24 fps aint nice, especially in where the camera was <!--emo&--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/mad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad.gif'><!--endemo-->

I have a GainWard GeForce 4200 128mb card running on a P3 1Ghz with 512MB RAM and I get 100 fps when I'm alone running down hallways and about 30-40 when I'm in the marine base getting stomped on by Onos, Fades and everything else. I run my screen resolution at 640x480 but I have FSAA on to smooth out the edges.

One of the things people overlook when figuring out framerate problems is all the crap they have loaded into memory. File sharing programs, instant messengers, wallpaper changers and god knows what else running in the back ground that takes up precious CPU cycles. Turn that stuff off before you start playing, it helps, really.

    Next,
    1) Make sure all your previous video card drivers for the Kyro have been removed, Check Add/Remove programs.
    2) Download the latest Detonator drivers for the Nvidia card 41.09 <a href='http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=winxp-2k_41.09' target='_blank'>HERE</a> and install them.
    3) Start up Half-life go into the config menu >> Video >> Video Mode >> change your video driver from Direct3D to OpenGL at whatever resolution you want. Remember, the higher the resolution the less FPS you get because it has to render more pixels.
    4) Start the game and then open the console by hitting the "~" key. Type "fps_max 100" then hit enter.

My friend's ti 4200 performs slightly under my ti4600. I'm sure the settings for both cards would be identical to get the most juice out of them. Look at mine. Constant 100 fps usually, with only like 75 at bottlenecks.

P.S. Don't give up on NVidia, that card you have is a bad **** card. I get jealous that my homie's 4200 scores like 600 points less than me on benchmarks, because he's got his overclocked and more RAM behind his than I have behind my 4600. Trust me configure that card the right way and you will be quite pleased.

I had a huge performance boost with detonators above version 38 or 40. Download the last drivers. I jumped form 35 fps to 100 fps. Also, type fps_max 200 in the console.

Turn off anisotropic filtering and watch your fps go high again. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    thanx for replying,
i already do make sure i turn off all background programs. everything except "zonealarm" and "norton antivirus auto-protect".
i am currently running the 3dblaster detonator drver 41.80.
still getting same problem. i did a 3dmark2001 benchmark today - got 6109!!! omg that sux!!
i did the online comparison and saw people with same specs as me or slightly lower getting twice my score!!! <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo--> i was oh so very angry to say the least <!--emo&--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/mad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad.gif'><!--endemo-->

BTW - unreal2 isnt all its made out to be. omg. the character models are good in that they are well articulated as in ut2003, but when u shoot enemies, they dont show body hits well. even when u want to gib things the animation sux. the environment sux too, doesnt show any damage from weapons fire. <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif'><!--endemo-->

I pretty much gave up on PC gaming.
I bought a whole new computer recently and it's been a big disapointment.

    <b>My System</b>
    AMD ATHLONXP 2000+
    MSI KT4VL VIA KT400
    512MB PC2700 (333Mhz) Micron
    Asus GeForce4 ti4200 64MB
    60.0GB Maxtor 7200rpm (fluid)
Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 Dolby Digital
    On-board lan
Floppy, Asus 52x CD-Drive, Keyboard, Optical Mouse
    NEC MultiSync 97F (19" black monitor 0.20mm)
Altec Lansing 251 (5.1 speaker system)
    WindowsXP Pro
    DirectX 8.2
    Latest detonator drivers
    Latest Soundblaster drivers
I close all my background applications except "Norton Internet Security" (wich blocks like 100 "attacks" per day!!! What the f*uck is up with that?!?!?)

Basically cost me <u>ALOT</u> of money and what do I get?

I run NS in OpenGL at a resolution of 1600x1200 in 32bpp (with high particle details and all that) and I usually get 60+ FPS. But it sometimes goes down to 20-30ish... I basically get from 20-99 (mostly 60). But with the hardware I have (and the money I threw away) I should be getting a constent 99FPS! $hit! People with half my computer get 99 fps!

I can run BattleField1942 fine with all the highest settings (in 1280x960, 32bpp, max everything) even on 64 player servers! (except for the rare slowdown, very rare), but on the other hand, Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2 (the new one) gives me crappy FPS (I don't have the counter, but I'd guess around 18-40 fps)!!

Even Counter-Strike gives me a hard time! $hit, that mod has such a low number of polygons to process and I still get HUGE slowdowns whenever 1 smoke grenade is on screen.... (I go from like 75+ to 15fps)

Why can't I simply get my money's worth?

Make sure your not using the microsoft AGP drivers for your motherboard which are usually installed by default. You need to get the right ones from your mobo manufacturer or you'll have crappy fps.

I have an AMD Athlon 1800+ and a GeForce3 Ti200 and I'm ALWAYS above 60fps... Usually around 90-100. Your problem isn't your hardware, it's the drivers and settings you're using. Blame it on the hardware if you want, but you need to update all your drivers. Uninstall the video drivers then install the latest... Install AGP drivers, and get the Via4in1 if you have a via chipset. Remember folks, this is the half-life engine we're talking about. If you can't run it well with your Ti4200 then it's YOUR fault, not the fault of the hardware.

Check your motherboard BIOS. This goes for anyone with an nVidia card. Look at your AGP Driving Value. Make sure you set it for "EA". On most mother boards that is not the default value. If it's not set to "EA", change it over to that. That in itself is probably good for 30-40 FPS. No joke.

ok, I got a Ti4200 with 64megs, how should I set up my settings for best quality?
  • Ensign_DeadmeatEnsign_Deadmeat Join Date: 2002-11-22 Member: 9590Members
Some good BIOS settings for best video perfomance are:

    Video RAM cacheable: Disabled
AGP Aperture Size: Half of your computer's available RAM.
AGP Driving Value: EA (You may have to set AGP Driving Control to Manuel) Many OEM motherboards may not give you access to this function.
Make sure the 4x AGP is enabled.
    Force 4-way interleave: Enabled.

Under the video card properties, set it for best quality. You may lose a couple of FPS as compared to best performance, but the change in picture quality is well worth it.

Also obviously, make sure hard acceleration is turned all the way up. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Drivers yes the latest are stable and perform well on the nvidia chips that I have tested(TNT, TNT2mx,TNT2ultra,GF3Ti,GF4mx,GF4Ti), fps_max 200 = NO. It is generally considered you should set this to a realistic average to help smooth the game. HL is limited to 100fps by the engine so setting it higher than that is pointless. With your hardware you should be able to hold over 80fps in most circumstances and it ould not do any harm to set fps_max to 100, also swich of anti-aliasing and rack up your screen res to 1024 or 1600 the GF4 will work better in those modes and at 1600x1200 you really dont need or want anti-aliasing. Antistropic filtering has a fps hit but should be ok on x2 or x4. I have a P4-2Gig with a Geforce 3 and normally get 80fps in an active game. Try switching off Vertical Sync.

    <!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin--> already do make sure i turn off all background programs. everything except "zonealarm" and "norton antivirus auto-protect".<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Both of these programs can have a huge performance hit. Assuming you get the same fps in a single player game, unplug you internet and try after uninstalling both of these. (Norton doesnt like to disable and usually continues running in the background but just ignores virii if yu diable it!)
If you find one of these is to blame there are alternatives, like a hardware firewall/router and/or Trend's PC-Cillin.

    or... overclock!!!
    Download Coolbits.... <a href='http://www.overclockers.com.au/techstuff/a_coolbits/' target='_blank'>On this page</a>
Coolbits is the easiest way to overclock, its a registry entry that opens up the "Clock Frequencies" tab in your Desktop>Right Click>Properties>Settings>Advanced>Whatever Vid Card You Have Menu...

its as easy as sliding the bars over.... but only slide about 3-5 points and then test....

My Geforce 2 MX400 and Intel P3 600Mhz Comp runs NS at 60 fps constant, and only a 2 degree increase in vid card temps.... its gone from 180Mhz core to 247.... but dont do that to urs.... i have an asus card... very good cooling.

With WindowsXP you need to tell windows to override the default refresh of 60Hz and turn off Vsync will help. You need the 40.xx drivers to use the following instructions:

    1) Go into the control panel
    2) Double click the "display" icon
    3) Click on "settings" tab
    4) Click on "Advanced" near the bottom
    5) Click on the GeForce# tab on the top (should have a Nvidia icon on the tab next to the name)
    6) On the side menu that pops out expand the "Performance & Quality Settings" section by clicking on the "+" symbol
    7) Under OpenGL section find the Menu option called "Vertical Sync" and choose the "Off by Default" option.
    8) under the Direct3D menu expand that one to reveal "Refresh Rate Options" then select "override refesh rates"
    9) Set your common gaming resolution (800x600, 1024x768 or 1280x1024 ) to 85 Hertz to help keep you from getting a headache <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    That should help you register your 99fps <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Reformat.

Assuming you don't have underlying hardware issues (which is does not sound to be the case,) you will get the fps you should.

Worst advice yet. I would consider this the most destructive method possible and if the problem is related to configuration or software conflict - which it has every indication of - this will only waste a day or two of his time and probably loose some data he wanted without actualy accomplishing anything at all.

Floppy: How are you getting on?

DO NOT DO THIS! If your monitor doesn't support that type of Refresh rate, YOU CAN (and most probably will) damage your monitor. If your monitor can only handle 75MHz in 1280x1024, telling it to run at 85, WILL damage it.

If you want to fix the 60Mhz bug, download the windowsXP refresh rate fix (can be found on www.guru3d.com and many other harwarde sites).
Also, upgrade your WindowsXP with the Software Pack 1.

It's bad advice alright but unlikely to damage a modern monitor, generally they have safety circuits and will just drop into standby if you exceed their abilities. Some alternatively display "Error - Out of Range" or similar. The Detonator Drivers 42.68 that I am running allow you to override the Refresh Rates so I suggest you download them if thats what you want to do but it will not increase your fps - in fact it will probably drop a few fps if you have vsync switched off.
Oh and btw Detonator 40.xx were unstable on many cards so use 41.xx or later if you can.
