Whats The Map For?

I have been trying to get the hang of this mod and not quite succeeded but ho hum, different topic.

Please can someone tell me the purpose of having the map in the top right hand corner of the screen as a Marine? It shows nothing of value (as far as I can see). I would have thought that it would have at least showed you where your team mates were - like blue blips, or things with big sharp pointy teeth were, once you got the upgrade to motion tracking.

I am pretty sure that no-one actually looks at the blue blomonge in the corner whilst they are running round as they either
a) have no idea where they are anyway
b) know the map and don't need it

Anyone?

    I just thought how cool it would be if the map was replaced with the commander view so you can see what's going on at base or locations that are being attacked.

    Yah, the minimap is supposed to show stuctures and team mates the same as the Commander minimap, but is currently broken.

    It's not broken, per se, just lacking of any really useful features. Some improvements are planned for v1.1, but that could be a while in coming.

    true. the minimap is not broken. it is functioning perfectly. it just isnt useful at all except if your learning new maps. because the hive rooms are always huge huge so you can get there easy, but after a few rounds you memorize the map. i never ever look at it. i just ignore it.

    Same as me i dont look at it at all anymore.

    I want 1.1 to have a new gun and a new alien. O and some water maps, like have abilty to breath underwater for aliens and have scuba gear for marines, like those things from halflife that were underwater onos type things. I'm still waiting for a flashbang and smoke in NS as well.     Well, this post was certainly off topic... But at any rate, that's not going to happen.


    And the minimap is broken right now. The client actually has all the information for building locatiosn, just like the commander minimap, but it isn't drawing it properly. This will be fixed for 1.1, I think.

    Personally... being on a lower end machine, i wouldnt mind if it were removed all together. If it is decided to "fix" it/ make it more complex/ show the commander view or what not, i can only pray we will be allowed the option to turn it off.

    It will never be made to show the commander's view. HL would choke and die trying to render two completely separate areas with poly counts as high as they might be. But the marine minimap is designed to look exactly like the commander's minimap, except that the marine's view is more zoomed in. It will show the red and blue 'dots' for friendly and enemy creatures and buildings.

    It shouldn't be much of a performance hit at all. The client already recieves all the information. It just isn't drawing it. And 4x4 pixel sprites (I believe that's what they are) are a negligible performance drop on any system that can already run NS.
