Bait The Skulks

anti-ambush tactic
skulk ambushes can really ruin your day as a commander. If your marines can't get to key locations then you will not win, it's that simple. I'll use mess hall in ns_nancy as an example. It's a great ambush point because it's dark, has a door, provides access to most of the map, and marines are always salivating over it (maybe they are hungry! hehe). lets say you have a team of 4-5 rines. Hopefully you will have spotted one that is a non-noob/loyal marine. Tell him that he's the bait. He goes up and opens the door while the rest sit half way back down the hall. as soon as it opens he runs straight forward, over the table and doesn't look back til he gets to the window. Now when all the skulks converge on him the rest of the team just blasts fire in that direction killing all the clueless skulks. Now the aliens might try being smart and waiting til the whole team is in the room. But if they do that then the bait marine has free reign on them from the other side of the room. If you are a grunt in your next game try this yourself. Take one for the team and be the bait.

If you've got marines that are comfortable with each other (like clanmates, for example), this idea works great. It'll also let you weed out the aliens that know what they're doing (that will wait for the right time to attack) from the ones with itchy... um... bite fingers.

    Yep, that's a good tactic.
There are ways to counter it, though.

My favourite ambush tactic in mess hall is to close the door with parasite the moment the first marine walks in. Half the team is outside, the other half is inside. Easy prey for skulks. If you're lucky, you might even catch one with the door. (mess hall door kills you if you're in the way when it closes)

In the case of your "bait", he suddenly finds himself alone in a closed room with hungry skulks.

hey thats mine! I have more posts than you so I win

no really though you are right. another way to counter this is if all the skulks rush right into the hallway. But they have to know this tactic is being used. Theres a counter to everything in this game. Otherwise it would be called a "balance issue"

Good tactic, its just on pub servers the teamwork is a joke the majority of the time. Whos gonna volunteer? And if the commander "orders" someone to their death and the anti-ambush fails, the respect for the commander kinda plummets

or if you don't want to parasite the door closed for some reason, have one skulk drop on the bait and kill the bait, and the rest of the skulks will still be in ambush.

I've had the same problem. I told my teamates to sit back and let me rush in first. I do, but it didn't work because the morons closed the door out of fear.
