Incompetent Marines

The #1 cause for commanders grey hair.
Okay, so we were playing on Tanith. I was commander.
We had reactor room early on, we had plenty of ressources.
Not 10 minutes since the begining of the game and we already had secured Reactor room, Main base, and the Waste hive.
All 3 spots had multiple turrets and a phase gate.

Life was good. Cash was flowing.
30 minutes in the game, I had researched ALL upgrades (all 3 levels of armor and weapon damage, Motion Tracking, JetPacks, Heavy Armor).
35 minutes in the game, EVERY SINGLE marine had in their possession:
-(1) knife
-(1) welder
-(1) Shotgun or (1) Heavy Machine Gun or (1) Grenade Launcher
-(1) Jetpack or (1) Heavy Armor

Since we were like 9-12 marines, at least 6 people had a HMG, 1 a shotgun and 2 a grenade launcher. 3/4 of the team had HA and the rest had JP.

Now, I gave em orders. They needed to stick together, weld each other, and proceed forward. If I didn't drop 150+ medpacks in that game, I didn't drop one. I kept dropping ammo too.
Somehow, they KEPT being killed by level 3 and less aliens, and when the aliens finnaly got a second hive up, Fades were like the Apocalypse (spelling?).

I just don't understand this... my team couldn't kill a **** fade with Ha+HMG and HA+GL...
Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against people new to computer games. We all have to start somewhere, so yeah, some were lost, others didn't know wich team they were on... but still, that usually is like 1-2 guy per server who is at that level of newbiness....

So, not 10 minutes after the aliens get their second hive up, they get the hive I had so nicely secured, they are well uderway of getting reactor room, and they are unleashing death upon main base...
What the... I had all 3 places SECURED by shitloads of wellplaced turrets. So anyways, I got discouraged by the fact that 3 HA+HMGs couldnt kill a single fade (he killed all 3 though...) even though I kept healing them and whatnot... so... I quit, pretty much discouraged by NS players...

Errm I don't understand 'they kept dieing to level 3 aliens'? Of course they did. I assume you mean lvl 1 aliens?

Well tbh I don't know how you got in such a good position with such poor troops. Was there alot of people leaving/joining. Did the fade have umbra? There is probably no real explaination at all. Just all regular comms have had this happen to them.

yep, i've had some hacks following orders before. with lvl2 armor upgrades, lvl one weapon upgrades and motion scanning 4 of them were taken out by 2 skulks WITHOUT CARAPACE!

i mean really, when you can see them coming and i'm shrieking "INC INC INC!" at them they really have no excuse

It's discouraging when you've worked so hard to see it all go down the drain.

I've noticed that when I'm commanding, I often forget just how dangerous is actually is in-game. The command overhead doesn't account for elevation well at all, so if your troops were ambushed really, really well, it doesn't matter how well-equipped they are if they're caught totally by surprise.

If you have the resources (which it sounds like you did), don't be afraid to drop a scanner sweep around every corner. That'll get hiding aliens to move, making them show up on your team's motion tracking.

Sounds like they weren't welding either other. Even if you've got guys in HA with HMGs working together, once that armor is gone, they're toast if they don't have welder support.

A few JP marines with welders out hiding around a corner can do wonders.

It doesn't matter how well placed your turrets are - once Fades enter the game, you have to have actual player defenses if you expect to hold an area. Sentries *barely* cut it when the aliens have one hive; they're useless once two hives go up.

I had a very similar game. It was a large game and we had 3 or 4 RTs, so the cash was flowing and I was keeping the upgrades rolling in. We had failed to take the 2nd hive, but we had every upgrade possible. I could not, however, convince the HA dudes to stick together and weld each other, no matter how many times I told them to weld each other. We eventually lost because not enough Marines stuck together and supported each other.

btw arent marines invincible in tunnels.. todayi was sitting there and i saw a skulk i wasnt sure but most likely level 3 carpace... i emptied 25 bullets right into him or even more than half my LMG clip and he still didnt die and he kliled me?? T.T this has never happened before.. normally i kills skulks just like nothing.... easy as breathing -.-

i killed him once or twice when he WASNT into tunnel/vent thing... out of the 5 times he kiled me three.... i was only in the server for 10 minutes when my mom chcked on me so i hadta shutdown my NS:P hahhaa

There are a number of things that annoy me as commander.
    1) Backseat commanding. "OMG COMM BUILD HERE!!" "YOU FOOL DONT BUILD THAT!!" "GET THIS AND THEN THIS AND THIS!!" "ARE YOU NOT LISTENING??? I SAID BUILD THIS!!"
Dont get me wrong, I dont mind suggestions, but when I'm comm, I normally have my own strategy worked out.
    2) Marines who dont follow orders. And I dont just mean the waypoints. How many times have I said to a group of fully armed HA/HMG/Welder marines "Stick together, keep welding each other." Only to see them run off leaving each othe behind and getting killed one by one.
    3) If I give an order I expect it to be carried out (kind of despotic I know, but thats the commanders job isnt it?) If I got a penny everytime I told people to build stuff, or go somewhere only to see them totally ignore me, go off and die, then see the strategic window of oppotunity close I would be a very rich man.
I am generally a pretty fair comm. I reward good work, dont expect too much from people (at least I think I dont) and do a good job (according to a few people I've played with) but when I see marines ignoring what I say, ignoring there team mates, and generally being an idiot, thats when I get annoyed. It takes more than skill for marines to win, it takes team-work... it would appear alot of marines forget that. Including me sometimes.

I totally agree with you lot. People not listening is the worste nightmare for comm and the shortest route to defeat. Another thing that totally PISSES me off is the fact that those marines that didnt listen to your orders tend to blame (who? you guessed it) the commander for the defeat. "We had a freaking noob comm and thats why we lost!!!". NO. You didnt loose because of the comm. You lost because you are ****, you cant aim, and you cant work as a team. There was one guy who called me a freaking noob, cos we lost a game. I offered HIM to comm the next game and he obviously refused. Blaming other people for your own mistakes is a typical human phsycology and there is nothing we can do about it. It happened, it happens, and it will happen.

I've been guilty of this on more than one occasion, but I feel justified in knowing that I was in the right. Ns_eclipse. I run into the eclipse hive (past the walls of lame) and start hiding. The hive is up, and I'm low on ammo. I scream at the commander (this was during 1.03) to drop a phase before they find me, so I can come back, get ammo, return and kill the hive. What do I get? A turret factory. "What are you doing?", I ask. "We're going to seige it", comes the reply. Now, don't get me wrong, I like seiges as much as the next guy, and as an alien I hate them. But come on! I actually do like joining servers where I don't have to comm (few and far between) because too many times I've joined only to watch all the marines run around the initial spawn area like chickens with their heads cut off. I wish there was a way for all of us to know (besides seeing them make stupid mistakes) who is an experienced comm and who is just learning. I know we were all learning at one time, but if the aliens know that it's a learning commander, they *might* (just speaking for most of the players I've dealt with who are actually nice people) cut the marines a break, and take 1/2 hour to explain tips and tricks of how to command. Too bad we can't make it a requirement to read these forums before you can command...

What's worse is "Shotgun Shotgun Shotgun Shotgun" or "HMG HMG HMG"
If I want you to have a weapon I'll give you one. I'm not just going to waste my res on a rambo with his kill count in mind.

Actually i would NOT be surprised if a team of 8 hmg ha were taken down by , 2 gorges, 2 lerks, and 4 fades....

    Why?

    Webbing + Umbra + Slash + Dcs = unstoppable

The alien team has more speed.. and WEB seriously screws HA guys over.

Of course, this is with good aliens AND good marines.

A gl spammer or a welder spammer DOES NOT clear the webs fast enough, by the time he welds, the HA guys would have already been webbed.

    Edit :

Ooops one sec, did the HA hmg guys die to skulks? If so, erm, the marines must have never ever played any form of fps in their life. Ever. Or even touched a mouse. 8 HMG HA / JP guys should be able to slaughter any team of skulks, and in fact, 1 hmg ha guy should be able to take down 4/5 skulks by himself.

A good grenedier will deal with that gorg and his WEBS and convince the fades that the umbra isn't much use against grenades. Competent Marines with HA+HMG and a HA+GL will win everytime against Fades with Lerk+Gorg support. Unless there are like 10 Fades and only 2 marines then they will get butchered. Umbra is crap now anyway I shot and killed a Lerk through his Umbra with a HMG that wasn't upgraded in no time at all.

Amidst the confusion, with good fades, the webbing wont be cleared fast enough.

Ive seen it before, ive experienced it when both when i was a commander and when i was a player.

'It' being 7 hmg ha or so marines being taken down by sometimes 3 fades a gorge and a lerk.

The grenadier simply does not gren fast enough.

Celerity fades are deadly against heavy armour.
