How Do You Like The Audio Motion Tracking?

DraegerDraeger Join Date: 2002-11-06 Member: 7255Members
I just got done playing a server today (My apologies that I've forgotten the name, but it wasn't voogru) that had true Aliens-style motion tracking for the marines.

It was pretty cool since the motion tracking cut both ways (everyone around you can here the "blip..blip..screeblip.. scrEEEblip. ". This is the kind of MT I've always wanted in NS since I first played it.

If you've played on a server with this plugin, what do you think about it?

I got it off the forums yesterday and installed it on my server. So far it seems really good although I have only played a couple of games with it. Give it a try:-

Except for the fact that it's free and not tied to motion tracking, I think it's a good idea.

wouldnt that make voice comm a little more distracting?

And while i'm here i wanna give me $0.02 on motion tracking. I come from a linux server where motion tracking never worked until 1.04. As marines we were fiiiiiiine without it....we still over-powered the aliens around every turn. And now with 1.04, we have motion tracking, and it gives us even MORE of an advantage. I think its a little weird how an original alien trait is also given to the humans. But for a player like me, it doesnt matter. I play with my models off so I never see MT in the first place.

LOL, I remember the first time I went back on to the server i usually play on once 1.04 came out. The first thing i said was "What the hayle are all of these dots??" another regular replies "Motion tracking, now we have hive site just like aliens!" I say "ohhhh kay, thats dandy.... turning models off now" I got a few laughs.

In case no one figured it out yet, here's the post with the download link:

Motion tracking is not an alien trait. Aliens have hive sight.

Hive sight shows marines (and marine structures):

    Around another alien.
    Around sensory chambers.
    That have been parasited.

Motion tracking shows aliens (and hives, but not other structures):

    That are moving.

Those are rather important differences. Makes a bit of a difference in the gameplay. As for the beeping, I've never played on a server modded with it, so I can't say with any authority. However, it seems to me that I can hear aliens coming up just fine, and when I can't, it's because they have silence and I'm not supposed to be hearing them.

its the exact same concept. Being able to see the enemy through any wall in the game. I thought that was a cool trait for the aliens, but why they gave it to the marines, I dont know. And why MT sticks around long after the observatory is gone...I dont know either. And why I can recycle an arms lab, but can still make jetpacks...I dont know either.

And when is a skulk not moving?

Uhh hated it. I was playing as my beloved Skulk and it kept giving away
my position. But thats not what annoyed me, it was the fact we
were once agained forced to download extra .wav files...
Oh and lets not forget that fact that this ISN'T Aliens Versus Predator.

Whats the point trying to be stealthy and cloaking when the Marines can have instant
    access to tracking.

    Very annoying

I played it on Vadakill's server tonight, and I didn't like it at all. Made it harder to use voice comm, and it was NEVER needed.

I think the problem is that too many people don'T use headphones or shut off their sounds or something, so they don't hear aliens running around. When a skulk bites them in the butt, they scream out "WTF, where did he come from???", when I'm on the other side of the room, and I heard the skulk a mile away.

If only more people would LISTEN, then would hear the footsteps. You DON'T NEED THIS MOD!

Marines make nice little "tap tap tap" noises. Those noises are the sounds of feet hitting the ground. You can make use of this auditory information to inform your team that marines are aproaching. Also, aliens make all kinds of little "glop squish" sounds. This is the sound of their limbs coming in contact with hard surfaces. This is something any marine can listen for, and they can then inform their team of the discovery!

    *sigh*

It isn't rocket science folks. Put on your headphones. Turn up the volume on your speakers. If you don'T want your mom to hear you playing games, it is about time you invested 50 cents into a pair of headphones.

My own humble opinion of the audio tracker is that its annoying. The intense pitched beeping sound it makes is pretty displeasing to listen to, especially when you're fighting multiple skulks and that's the only thing besides biting and gunfire that you can hear. It also makes voicecomm difficult to listen to. Finally, the sound gets pretty monotonous after a while. Yes, it does track aliens, but that's what motion tracking is for. I found out that even if you turn off the audio tracking on your side, you can still hear your friends use it (even aliens can hear it from far away). If there was a way to make the beeping sound entirely client side (so that your friends couldn't hear you), then I wouldn't mind, but running around and having 5 high-pitched beeps going off at once almost drove me crazy on this one server I was playing on.

Anyways, that's my opinion. Other people can choose to love/hate it, I just don't like it because it interferes with my sound and voicecomm

i also played with it on vadakills server last night, and thought that it was pretty neat, but in the end it was just got annoying and ended up turning it off (and listening to footsteps through my headphones as usual, just as ravlen is suggesting)

so, my suggestion: make it so only the person who has it on can hear it, and then leave it on the server, that way if you like it, good for you, if you dont, its just like it was before

probably because the prototype lab makes jetpacks

    I'm with Ardesco here.
I play with my little speakers cranked right up (good thing I didn't have my headphones on)
I rush around the corner as a skulk all of a sudden I hear this bloody high pitched nails-on-a-chalkboard sound. If I load up a server, and see "audio motion tracking plugin" on the load up screen, I'm turning around and going to another server. Same as I do with many plugins, but this one is HORRIBLE, IMO. Maybe if it wasn't so damn loud compared to everything else it wouldn't be so bad. Personally, it's right up there with laser sights if you ask me. Just plain annoying with no REAL useful value.

If it worked AS ADVERTISED ON TV™ in the motd, it should only be on when your flashlight is on. In such a case, it's a great addition.

it turns on with your flashlight, but you can also bind a key to audiotracking_toggle

i too played it on vadakills last night. You can turn it off and on so its no biggie. I have good headphones so i can hear skulks anyhow. Its fun to play with though and adds another layer of depth to the game (although its not really that big a deal.. just small addition)

i turn it on when i'm parasited just to play with it <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> It'll probably be annoying hearing the beep from my teammates though.

the only real problem i have with this is that it is available from the start w/o upgrades....
also kinda cancell's silence upgd, as even with MT i can still sneek up behind marines quite often.

props to [who]them for makin a nice mod,
althou i generaly don't play any mod'd servers
