Communication

At last i have an intelligent question
Right, here we go.

The communication between marines. How is it going to work? Are you planning on using menus with pre-set messages in, are we going to have to type or is NS going to be nicely compatible with the HL Voice thingy?

The problems with using menus are that players have got to stand still and sort through endless reams of menus before they can speak to team mates and then they might not be able to find what they're after. Typing has obvious limitations especially if you have trouble smelling and the voice thingy is also a pain in the backside as the constant rumbling fart sound from people with broken microphones is going to spoil the atmosphere. Argh! How can it be done? Someone please enlighten me...

In NS, there is no alt-fire, only a system called the pie menu. So rt-click does this:

The idea is to group together commands by type and arrange them so you can flick your wrist and quickly get help, drop your weapon, request backup, etc. in testing this weekend, everyone seemed to find it pretty simple to use and helpful - even our die-hard keyboard binders (like myself).

I'm going to have to re-think some strategy here. I have a nervous habit of right-clicking randomly when bored, or there is no action. Might just have to disable mouse2.

but we can still use the voice comm that valve put in right. I would think that the marines have mics on them to communicate when going on a alien ship......

Yes, the you can use the voice option, in fact at least one of the screen shots I've seen show someone using it.

You'll notice our dear Cyanide spamming the voice channels on the third shot. I assume something like "Taking heavy fire" or, "Have you
    seen my leg?".

[edit] I posted that entire thing, assuming it was only the screenshot I desired, not the entire strand. *sigh* /me isa idiot[/edit]

lol then why do people still want to type on a diff topic someone said it would be more realistic if the marines type to each other rather then RADIO LOL i just found that funny

I don't remember what i was spamming, but to get back to the topic point, the marine GUI menu is INCREDIBLE! It is very useful, and if flay and the team would add a few more crucial commands, you woulnd't almost need voicecom or typing anymore, trust me.

hmm mdunno about this...i have not tried it yet so i can't claim to know how this menu works...but the way i picture it i don't think i'll be using it

1: you use the mouse while in those darn menus , *great way to get yourself killed ("oopsibrushedthemenubuttonandcan'taim####idied"scenario ) (and yes..that IS a word....now)

i think the DoD/CS voicemenu thing is better...as it does not affect the mouse in any way , but mybe that's just me

You can do all three. Preset commnads (through the RMBMenu), voice chat like normal, and type.

Also, a topic that hasn't seen the light of day in a while is that if you need to type, you -won't- be at a disadvantage (and I'm assuming this will come up with using the RMBMenu as well).

    'Why?' you ask?

Simple. Because of a thing called 'Overwatch'. (Yes, I'm dragging this post off topic, but the original topic has been answered, and the new people to the forums need to see this.)

    'What's overwatch?' you ask?

Simple. When you hold still for a few seconds, the marine automatically goes into an 'auto-aim' mode. This isn't a perfect 'shoot anything as fast as a computer can' mode... this is a simple shooting bot that is just about as good as the slightly less than average FPS player. It'll take a bit of time to actually recognize that there is an alien, and then it's accuracy might be a bit off.

But you will have -something- to protect you. It won't be much, but it'll be something. It'll also give you enough time to get back into the game.

I don't recall if the marine automatically crouches or not.

i would guess it would be a 90 degree angle of view infront of the marine.

Or sneak using all your firepower and keeping a constant 2 kg of lead in the air. Not really silent, but at least it's fun.
