Marine Minimap

More harm than good?
I dont know, but has this helped anyone? I get lost if I even look at it because I have no way of determining north or south, no lil direction pointing on it. And then it doesnt exactly scroll in the direction I move, often times looks like its stretching the image. And then It doesnt show other marines. So If I was lagging behind a sec following 4 teammates, and they hit a fork , I dont know which way they went and end up getting chewed up alone. And if Im an alien I can rock the vents fine, always know where I am with hivesight giving me a positioning by looking at the hives.

So true, it just blocks my view if a skulk is hanging in the rafters or what not. Hive sight is insanely useful, but the minimap is beyond crap. I won't openly tell them to just take it out, because they are repairing it obviously. But they should have at least taken it out for now.

i feal sorry for the people who are just starting out playing NS, if i hadnt memorized the maps and the vent systems i dont know where i would be, cause the minimap is useless IMO. it confuses me alot cause i have the map all layed out in my mind and then look at it, i dont remember the last time i took a gander at it.

Yea i tried as a newbie to look at the mini map but yes it did more harm than good. And still doed as it blocks some of the screen where something more important could be there.
Best way is to just run around the maps alot.

Would be good if the mini map actually help u the way u were going.

    Next time i think.

    I never use it either.

The Commander's mini-map really isn't all that great either. It lets you get from place to place easily, of course, but the red/blue boxes show up even after there's nothing there. Like, alien nodes still show up as red even after we take it out.

In the NS Radio interview with Flayra he pointed out that the minimaps were not finished before the 1.0 clients were released. The 1.1 client will fix the minimaps so they're not stretched AND they will provide the same tactical information that the commander can see, such as the location of other marines, buildings, and visible enemies. That should make them a lot more useful, eh?

I was just about to say - even if it just showed you where you were, it'd be useless. If it lets you know where fellow marines are, or where aliens other marines can see are, then it would be handy.

yep, needs to put stuff like that in there, also a compas to waypoints in there would be good, also i tend to find that the minimap zoom level doesn't show enough for proper bearings, "oh i'm in THE hallway!" does it even show past your view?

They could make the map transparent and maybe bright green dots to so your location and friendlys also bright red dots to show hostiles, maybe 3D but that probaly to hard or take too long make.

    Thats my two cents!

    Good Hunting!

IMO i would love it if the minimap had north as the way you are facing so it would become a mini radar system!

One of my first posts on this board was about how the minimap would be so much more useful if there was a compass on it.

The general reply was that there is no north/south/east/west on a spaceship, so it wasn't needed.

as for the commander minimap, you might want to look around ns\sprites\entity and edit some of those .spr files, i managed to make aliens look different from alien structures, and weld points look different from res nodes, very much helpful to a semi-newbie commander. also, making them a bit smaller helps you count how many are in a pile.

(i dont consider that editing to be a cheat because the comm is supposed to see things anyway!)

If you see on your minimap what the commander sees, then observatory in start is MUCH greater, and skulk rush would get even more useless.

I dont mind though, but if the minimap shows stationary targets its WAY harder to camp out marines in start leaving the skulk options to camp at strategic map positions, not bad at all...

What'd be nice is if the minimap was like the minimap in Turok (well, it wasn't a minimap, since it took up the whole screen, but it was very, very sweet): your position was a triangle, while the position was indicated with a V, and the portion without a side (the upper part of a V in this case) was your FOV (and it was accurate). All of the map was pretty much transparent so you could still see where you were going, but it highlighted certain structures and things on the map and sort of had color-coded outlines (the objects were all outlined, they were never filled)

Man it was nice.. do any of you know what I'm talking about?

Anyway, not sure how hard it would be to code this, but boy it'd be nice if you could..

When I command, "up" on my map is "north." Any grunt that disagrees gets no toys

"Okay guys, I need you to move in the celestial equator plane, at an angle of about 30 degrees relative to Aries. Wait, we're rotating at about...okay, so in 10 seconds it will have changed by...carry the two...damn it just go north!"
