Im sure Ill be flamed for saying this but I would go ahead and get yourself a T1 or about 1.3Mb/s. Just to be on the safe side, leaving room for expansion. You'll find everyone will vary in opinion on this one.

I run an NS 15 player and a CounterStrike 20 player on the same server. If you want to see my traffic usuage:

I've been fine with anywhere from 18-20 players, with a 500kbps connection. What I didn't understand at first was you get 500kbps (that's kilobits, 62.5 KB/s) in BOTH directions, so combined in/out usage is 1mbps. If you'll be paying for a set amount of bandwidth per month, consider that average servers usually have ppl starting in the afternoon to early in the morning. There aren't a lot of ppl on at 10am.

good grief. 150Mb/s!?! He'll hardly notice an NS server!

    i wonder if it's a typo or not <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
my server is on 100Mbit(too lazy to buy a gigabit card) and it gives me the option to put sv_maxrate 9999 (lots of tarffic as i remember)

Is he actually worried that a game server will consume that much bandwidth? That's an OC3 right? A full NS server won't use 1/100th of that. Tell him to get that server up! (And post the ip/port here, thanks. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->)

Hes not wooried its going to to slow it down and yes it is oc3 but as i said in my first post australian traffic costs about $100 or so a gb and he gets like 10gb or someting free so i just dont want the server racking up like 20gb or somthing huge and me payin it off for the rest of my life <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->.

Bytor, it prolly wont be up for a few weeks yet.

Eternal Bliss, do you know how much its uses a month?

So, you're talking about metered traffic then? He doesn't have 155 Mbps to use as he pleases; he has access to said pipe, and pays $X.XX AUD per gigabit/gigabyte of traffic that he uses, correct? Sometimes called "X dollars per gigabyte of transfer."

Yeah, you'll need a good bits-per-second-per-player number, and then multiply that by the amount of time you think the server will be in use per month/week/whatever. Usually, you get get hosed on metered connections. Flat-rate, capped or burstable connections are generally much cheaper.

looks like my server recieved about 29 gigs and sent about 51 gigs.

    that was in january.

16 players usually full about 12 hours a day 2pm to about 2am
    dex
if you would like i can send usage data to you by day or even hour. Only thing on this box is a 16 person ns server.

    maxrate 7000
Keep in mind a 16 person server full all the time 24x7 has the potential (7000 maxrate) of 270 GIGs a month.

Bits or bytes? That factor of 8 is important when $$ is concerned <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

bytes servers take a lot of data.

nah dude the full 155mbit is his well shared with the likes of the datacenter but he pays for how much traffic upstream and downstream

dexion, eek the a lot of $$$ i think i will have to go with a US server.
50gbs in Australia would end up costin me like $5000AUD just in traffic or somewhere around that area so thats like $10000USD i didn't think running a server would cost that much :S.

fyi my cs server (20 peeps) used about 75 gigs in jan. It is full about 16 hours a day. So fwiw ns uses no more bandwidth than any other hl game just a WHOLE lot more cpu.

Good god ... those bandwidth rates are ridiculous! Is that the average rate in Australia? Definitely go with a US server if the ping is acceptable for you. I get 400 gigs per month for $140 USD at RackShack.net in Texas. My server is a P4 2 GHz with 512 RAM. They have $99 per month servers also.

With Counter-Strike I usually see people saying 8 Kilobytes a second per player is fine. I can't see the usage being too much more for NS if any.
