<div class="IPBDescription">A real unique map</div> I really like this map, it just needs better ballancing and some way of orientation (signs).
It does not, so its just a fun map right now. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
Too bat because it has GREAT architecture and possibilities.

"Damn I love this map. 2 minutes as skulk and I am absolutely lost."
"Yeah rush the hive, rush the hive... I really want to rush, but i dont the hell know were I am!"
"Were ever that hive was, we lost it." (was under attack)
"can anyone tell me were i am ... commander were am I?"
"can every kind of alien building shoot now?" (no they were just cloaked and really good hidden)
after 15 minutes on the map: "wohoo, I finally found the marine base"
"You idiot!" (if you go right out of the marine base theres a vent full of water at the res, that you can weld close. Dont weld it from the inside (in the water) if theres another teammate and 2 skulks in the water, too.)
"OMG, look, we have 4 gorges... 6 players and 4 gorges." - "no problem, we have 7 or more ressource towers up"
"I have no idea why this lights go on when i walk below them. It is already fullbright so i dont need them"

    I've played cilrais before. He's not kidding about getting lost. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

And he's right about the architecture and lighting -- very nice, in some spots. I dunno who made it, but they need to keep releasing more versions of the map, because it has a lot of potential.

This maybe belongs in Mapping, but still..

Yeah, that is one biiiiiiig map..I loaded it up on a LAN game, just to have a quick wander about it, took me 10 minutes to find my way back to the marine spawn..<!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

I got lost in every map when I first started playing NS. I got lost in every CS map when I started playing that. I think you just have to play it more. People are just so used to the maps we play all the time. Thats my theory.

I just love that overwhelming feeling you get when trying something new.
The first time I played NS I was completely baffled by it.
I just gawked at the cool buildings (I was a marine) and jumped into a phasegate to the other side of the universe. There I met this heavy guy holding off a horde of aliens attacking through a long tunnel (tram tunnel).
Then suddenly they started coming from the ceiling and the guy kept yelling for welding.

That was my best game ever. Too bad I will never experience that again... The maps just seem to get smaller and smaller by the day.

But I like exploring a new map and seeing the creative ideas of excellent mappers. Some readyrooms are just superb.

    A bit off-topic maybe...

    cilrais is one big acid trip of a map <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
I love it, it is one of my fave custom maps, but it takes at least 4-5 times playing on it to get even a moderate grasp of the directions, because it is just so big and layered... the tram tunnel is my fave part.

You can find this map over at <a href='http://www.mayberrygames.com/ns.html' target='_blank'>http://www.mayberrygames.com/ns.html</a>

It is also in the rotation on the Mayberry NS server.

it really is a very prettymap, kudos to the creator, the only "problem" is that you get completly lost, not an issue if you wanna play around and have fun at a lan or soemthing but certainly a bit of a problem in serious play. More versions would be great, the map has serious potential.

If you are looking for a direct download... <a href='http://www.umich.edu/~jadega/ns_cilrais_1229.zip' target='_blank'>http://www.umich.edu/~jadega/ns_cilrais_1229.zip</a>

This might help if you are confused by the layout...

Also, I did make some attempts at making the map easier to navigate, maybe it is hard to notice but:
-There is an elevation change from the marine spawn to the hives. If you find your orientation is downwards (or you go down a ladder/elevator) you are heading towards a hive. If you find yourself going upwards you are either heading towards the marine spawn or some nuetral ground (like mantle/core annex, which is between two hives).

-Also I tried to do some color coding. Basically the more white lighting you see the closer you are to the marine spawn, the red lighting corresponds to the core, green to the surface, and yellow/orange to the mantle. As you are leaving the marine spawn the doorways are lit by the color of the corresponding hive you are headed towards.

    Wonderful map! Great job!

However, there is a siege spot that seems to be a bit too good. The core hive can be taken out from the Command Access Hall, which is close to the marine base (south, left, down and you are there - 10-15 sec running, about).

Weld the point shut, build and ATF and then a couple of sieges in the hall, straight west of the hive and its core hive goodbye.

Now, that isn't all that bad, but the problem is that there are only two ways to attack that point, and both of them are pretty far from the core hive and requires the skulks to attack along straight, narrow corridors. Also, there are no good ambush points along the marine route to the place. Seems that this pretty much makes it very, very hard for aliens starting in core hive.

yeah i agree with that, whoiever made this map has potential but needs to simplify it a bit more. Some noobs dont realise the orientation which is gwenius even iif u dont know the map <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

To the mapper (to all mappers, really):

I wouldn't worry too much at all about initial reactions of "It's too easy to get lost", or "It's too confusing". People will ALWAYS say that about EVERY map that is designed properly for NS, or for anything other than a killbox for that matter. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that there would be gripes about people getting lost in any map someone made that was more than just a single, unbranching hallway. People have to especially accept that NS is not CS or HLDM, and that they will never be able to intuitively know the layout of any NS map immediately. To me, this is a -benefit-, not a detraction. It makes the game much more interesting.

I agree with the above. Getting lost in new maps is both frustrating and exciting.

    Live with it!

As for Cilrais... if the doors bug ever got fixed and that seige point in core got changed a bit then the map would be Extremely good instead of just good. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

I will have to look for that color coding. Too bad i didn't figure that out the first 30 times i played it... I might have got lost fewer times. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
